In memory of DaphneHoudiniBatdog
Came to Ashland about 10 months ago with 2 older dogs (13-year old sisters) with chronic problems (on prednisone for most of the past 11 years for allergies, history of two knee repair surgeries back to back, spinal degeneration, assorted lumps, repeated skin infections, arthritis with joint deformities, etc.) They have had only two other vets in their 13 years, one in Salt Lake City birth to age 4, and one in Rhinelander age 4 on. The first was an older gentleman in solo practice and very down to earth, from whom I learned much, always trying to use the least toxic means possible to manage problems, such as fish oil for less severe allergies, which worked for one of them, or enzymes for ear infections, which always worked if I used it as soon as I noticed the stink ear. The second, found after a terrible visit elsewhere in an emergency, was an excellent medical diagnostician, pathologist and surgeon, who would tell you straight up what he thought about whether or not to pursue various options, such as whether or not it seemed worthwhile to aspirate the lump in question at that time or not, but in the end would respect your decision without further question. So tough road to follow for anyone here. We tried a few other vets here first on the recommendation of new colleagues. They would likely be fine if I had puppies, the docs themselves being young and fresh out of school and all about all the latest allergy testing/weekly shots now available. But I needed someone who understands the complex choices that must be made when managing older dogs with multiple problems, where the standard treatment of one problem often can exacerbate another one, which those folks did not. Dr. Walmsley was recommended by other colleagues with the comment that she is an outstanding surgeon. On our first visit, she was like a breath of fresh air, grasping the complexities my girls and I deal with on a daily basis without needing detailed explanation of anything, despite the fact that Id just brought in the previous records at the time of the visit. Her demeanor is exceptional -- calm, quiet, professional, but also exuding obvious warmth and caring towards my dogs in a way they responded to, even the anxious one who is slow to warm up. I had to put one of the two musketeers down today. I called at the last minute to see if she could come to the house to do it, as even though we live only a few blocks from the clinic, it was still too far for the old gal to make it on foot, and shed had a lot trouble with getting in and out of the car earlier in the day when I took her for her last usual Saturday morning outing. Dr. Walmsley agreed to come and we took care for my girl right out in the garage where she was snoozing. Dr. Walmsley easily adjusted her technique to accommodate my girls surgically-altered knee anatomy and in the end it was very peaceful, yet also efficient, though there was no sense of rushing. Dr. Walmsley also took great care to encourage and give my girls sister time to explore what had just happened before taking my baby away. I highly recommend Dr. Walmsley if you are looking for someone who can grasp where you at and respect your own understanding of your animals, yet also provide top quality surgical and medical care as needed and appropriate. As a physician who works for a larger medical organization, I am not allowed to provide patient care outside of the clinic, in terms of place, hours, or via alternative means (phone/email/Skype, etc.) like those in private practice can. I appreciate having doctors for myself and for my animals who have the talent and guts to run their own solo practices and who can accept the responsibility of being on-call 24/7, which is difficult to imagine. There are times when they take needed and well-deserved time off and thus are not available, so you have to turn elsewhere in an emergency, but they are also generally much more flexible and able to respond to the needs of individual patients without government regulations and organizational policies getting in the way.

Wonderful, amazing people working here! We feel they may have saved our mastiffs life! The assistant and the vet sat on the floor with our "Titan" through the whole experience. He had a reaction to the horse flies and had extremely painful hot spots surrounding his head in a matter of one day. The next morning he couldnt even walk. This team of 2 women took us in right away, loved him up so he could be as comfortable as possible, and we walked out with our dog whos now napping the day away with a partially shaved head, but feeling so much better now on antibiotics and cleaned up disinfected sore spots. We are so grateful for the love they gave our baby!! (Also were amazed at how little we were charged for the nearly 2 hour visit!!)

Very kind to animals. She is realistic as well. She is patient and serious without being heavy. I really like having her as our vet. I have farm animals and she is very good with them.

The most amazing vet I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Colleen treats every patient like part of her own and the happy atmosphere is so welcoming!
