This USED to be the go to hospital in the area, now I will never come here again. Because this is a public posting and I Dont want to be too specific I will try to explain as generally as I can. I brought someone here a couple months ago and it was a eye opener (one I wish I would have learned from). In full disclosure my review is specifically written about the emergency room. In my personal opinion ever since st charles started focusing on their drug detox and rehab program it ruined the hospital. I am not against these programs and with all of the drug problems on long Island we certainly need it but my frustration is the effect it had. The emergency room staff were overwhelmed before, talk to any ER worker and they will tell you how crazy it can be, but with the addition of people coming in for drug treatment it is now too much. It has taken its toll on them, the staff at all levels are overworked which unfortunately makes them short tempered and rude. They are now dealing with many patients who are addicts just trying to get a fix which has made the staff cynical and hesitant to believe their patients but unfortunately when offered an opportunity to confirm information with other treating doctors too stubborn to take the time to. Either trust a patient or take time to confirm information. Bed space is so limited the doctors rush patients out pushing them back on "outside" doctors, that is if the doctor actually has time to see you. The doctor does just enough to stabilize you and get you out the door if it takes any real diagnostic testing, well they just dont have time for that. The emergency room is good for only one thing, making sure you are not in immediate threat of death other than that the advice they provide should be taken with a grain of salt, after you leave go see a real doctor, by real I mean one that is actually willing to spend more than 2 minutes looking into your symptoms,. Oh the one other thing this hospital is apparently good for is people looking to scam the system to get a fix, the conversations I overheard were scarey to say the least people openly discussing scamming to get the drugs they need. Like I said before long island definitely has a drug problem and people need a safe place to go but it really should be a place dedicated to drug treatment, it would be better for them and it would allow the emergency room to provide the services they were Designed to.

I just left St Charles ER, and I am livid. I will leave out the details on why I was there, but this is what took place. I was with my 21 year old son. We went to a different facility at 9am, this morning. He was evaluated, tested, test results reviewed, and calls were made to our insurance company, all within 2hr. The problem was there were no beds available and wouldnt be until the following day. They recommended that we go to St. Charles ER. We got there about 11:30 am and he was seen about noon. He came back out to the waiting room, and by 12:30-12:45 he was called into the ER. I sat in the waiting room. By 3:30 I was very concerned as to what was going on. I asked the security guard, if he could have someone come out and give me a status, he told me my sons nurse will come out. After 15-20 minutes and no one coming out to talk to me, I asked him again to please get someone who could give me an update. The nurse who came out said there was nothing she could tell me, they were still waiting for lab results(over 3 hours for a urine and simple blood test) They still didnt know if they were admitting him or not. When I asked why no one in those 3 hours couldn’t come out to tell me that, her response was "you want to hear something funny sir, Im not even his nurse and I came out". Sure, she came out after I had to ask twice for someone. As far as hearing something funny, as she put it, all I heard something very disrespectful to me, and very unprofessional by her. When I asked if she could give me a ballpark on how long it could be, like 10 minutes, or 10 hours, she responded by slightly raising and voice and very sarcastically saying, 10 hours. She advised me to go home and wait to hear from him. I got so angry that I thought the best thing to do was leave. On the way home I spoke to my wife, who was also very concerned about our son’s fate. I told her what happened. Ten minutes later she called back. She called St Charles, and was told that our son was going to be admitted, I guess it wasn’t 10 hours. Unless you like to be treated rudely, disrespected, by people who have no compassion for you or your family. I highly recommend that you never visit that hospital.
