This hospital is a joke, go anywhere else before going to ECM. This review will be regarding my husbands care in the E.R in late October although I had my own horrible experience there in 2011. After this were never going back. My husband had an appendectomy 4 weeks prior to our visit (performed at Madison Hospital which is amazing and I would recommend) and was experiencing a complication. We were there at 8am on a Saturday so the wait time was nil, they treated my husbands excruciating pain with appropriate medications, and they accurately diagnosed the problem which was a 2.5MM kidney stone that was a post-op complication from the appendectomy. Those are the only positive things I can say. He was never seen by a doctor, just a CRNP, which is unacceptable. The nurse was supposed to administer fluids for dehydration, but never did even after I questioned why he hadnt received them yet. The only medications they prescribed were for pain, no alpha blocker to help the stone pass, which is both a typical and crucial part of treatment. They didnt provide any verbal instructions upon discharge, just a huge stack of paperwork that I had to comb through to discover that he needed to strain his urine until the stone passed, and they didnt provide us with a sieve/strainer either. They rushed us out like the place was on fire, in and out within 2 hours and everyone was very brusk and rude to us (while of course greatly enjoying themselves chatting and joking around with fellow staff members) while we were there. They did slip a referral to a urologist inside all of that paperwork and on the Monday following the E.R visit he mercifully fit my husband in for an appointment and was APPALLED by the lack of care he had received at ECM.

Do not let your family go here. They practice medicine in an almost mid-evil way. They almost killed a family member of mine. That is not an exaggeration or a joke. If we had not moved him to UAB he would have surely died. He started improving drastically 2 days after moving him. UAB did some tests and treated him with the proper antibiotics and things turned almost instantly. They (ECM) were trying to open up his abdomen and CUT OUT the infection for a 4th time, which our new doctors told us was a really bad idea and would have surely finished the job (killing him). He required a total abdominal reconstruction to repair the damage done by this hospital, but we had to wait 6 months for him to build up strength as they literally almost killed him at ECM. There were a FEW good nurses there, and they know who they are. Thank you to both of them. The rest of the staff is horrendous, without compassion, and down right evil in some cases. Especially the chubby male nurse who was the nurse captain of the 3rd floor. My family member was sick for almost 2 years under their care. It has been 4 years since the initial botched surgery he is now almost recovered from their terrible, amateur procedures. Please dont make the same mistake we did. They treated us like dogs, and tried everything in the world to prevent us transferring to UAB. They even tried to tell us the ambulance ride to UAB was going to cost $2k and our insurance wouldnt cover it. That was a lie. Every single surgery resulted in a major infection. I am not exaggerating. Recently I found out that another family member has had a similar experience. So, things have not changed. Do yourself a favor and go to a real hospital.

The behavioral health unit "Renaissance Center" needs to re-evaluate how they train their staff to interact with patients families. The only decent staff member I interacted with while my daughter was inpatient there was a RN, Anthony(?) on the first night. He was caring and compassionate. The psychiatrist, Dr Sanchez, was horribly rude, unprofessional and condescending when she spoke to me. She went so far as to be almost insulting, insinuating that everything wrong with our daughter was our fault. She contradicted statements she made regarding discharge care, and overall I felt almost bullied by her. The social worker, Kyle Smith, was just as bad. He was short and rude, going so far one day to hang up on me while I was in the middle of a sentence. I was clearly stating, "hang on, I have something else" and he said, "thanks, okay bye" and hung up on me. When I called back to inform him that I was not yet done, I had further questions, he insincerely stated that "he apologized, thought we were done and were saying goodbye." Then when I attempted to make clear to him that we would have no problem picking our daughter up at discharge, she would just have to call us a little ahead of time to give us time to get there, he again got short and rude and stated they would just send her home in a taxi. I about had to argue with him that wed pick her up. If this is how the doctor and the social worker interact with patients families, I shudder to think what their actual patient care is like.

I went for a shoulder and back injury. Not severe, but extremely painful. They completely ignored my back pains and focused on my shoulder. They still wouldnt do anything and I had to beg for an xray. If course ,"nothing was wrong". And the gave me a steroid shot and sent me out the door with the WRONG paperwork for my insurance claim. No Im going back and forth with the billing department. Ill never be going back. Also while I was waiting a woman came in crying and screaming, "my mom is dying in the car outside will someone please help me!" the little lady at the counter looked at her like she didnt care, slowly walked to get a wheel chair, didnt call for help. Slowly walked outside and argued with the hysterical woman about her mother instead of trying to comfort her. I was actually the one to talk to The woman and calm her down. This is by far the worst hospital operation Ive EVER SEEN. Dont go to this hospital. Oh also they sent 6 people ahead of me because they said I didnt seem to be in much pain. Im sorry, but I dont show weakness. Wasnt raised that way. There are still men out here

This emergency room was a JOKE!!!!! We will never be back! Could have went to express med and gotten better care! My boyfriend and I just left from ECM emergency room and basically they sent us home with steroids and a pat on the back! We went to there because my 25 yr. old boyfriend was having severe chest pains, blurred vision and shortness of breath and this was the second time it had happened in a week. Walking in the nurse at the front desk treated us like teenage kids as if we were over reacting. Well we get back to a room and they start running all kinds of test and asking for his history. So after they get all the information they decide they are going to do a chest ex-ray. Two hours later the doctor comes in and says well your heart looks fine we think you have bronchitis but you have no infection and your chest ex-ray looks fine too so we think you will be fine and we are going to give you some steroids have a nice day. Not only was the staff useless the building and cleanliness was horrendous!!! Needless to say I will not be back even if my life depends on it!!!!!
