I am absolutely in love with Chico Animal Hospital. I moved here three years ago from Indiana and had left a very good practice back there and was anxious about finding care for my pack (5 dogs when I moved -- 3 now; natural selection NOT poor care!). I went somewhere else for about 6-7 months and then someone recommended Chico Animal Hospital and I havent looked back since! My dogs are all special needs dogs so we "get to" go to the vet often so my review is based on pretty extensive knowledge over the past year and a half. Every single person at Chico Animal Hospital is a gem. I personally love, love. love Dr. Prather (see my separate review for her!) but I have also seen Dr. Callen and he is super great too. All of the office staff are exceedingly lovely and kind. They have quickly learned my name and all of my pack of dogs. If Im in the clinic with a different dog they always ask about the others (especially if a different one has been in recently). They are all so kind and gentle with my quirky babies, and I have seriously not a single complaint about any person Ive interacted with there. Two specific "highlights" of our experience with them: 1. They go over and above the care Ive experienced in the past. Dr. Prather has called me in the evenings or on the weekends to report on a lab test weve been waiting on or if I leave a message that I have a question about something. She is not a 9-5 vet and I so, so appreciate that. She is also super detailed and willing to take the time I need to get the best picture of what is going on. I have never felt rushed or that she doesnt care about one of my dogs. My interactions with Dr. Callen have been the same. I think the kitties they have hanging around the office also speak to this -- they have 5 cats living in the office that have been rescued by them in some way. Two of the cats are missing legs because apparently Dr. Callen couldnt stand the thought of putting down a kittie just because their leg needed amputating! Ive personally witnessed Dr. Callen whisk off a dog that a stranger found hit by a car on the road and do what he could to alleviate that poor things pain. 2. I never, ever feel like Im a "walking wallet." By this I mean I never feel like they are trying to sell me things I dont need or trying to run tests just to charge money. Some of the other vets Ive experienced in town want to run every test in the universe and prescribe 85 medicines in the mean time and can run your bill into the thousands in seconds. I have NEVER had that happen with Chico Animal Hospital. Everything they suggest is well explained about why they think it would be a good option and I always feel I have the power to say no to without being judged, and they more often than not take a conservative/minimalist wait and see approach without jeopardizing our pets health. Because of this approach and our now long-ish history with Dr. Prather, I know if she suggests something she truly is suggesting it because shes thought critically about it, its necessary and it will help our dog get better. They are also amazing on "re-checks." Some of our pets have had to go back a few days later because of one thing or another and if its just a quick check-in related to what they were seen for previously or adjust meds or something simple they never charge an appointment fee for that! Its just really, really refreshing.

My wife and I are very thankful to Dr. Prather. Our oldest dog Charlie suffered a spontaneous internal bleed early one January morning and we carried him in for a quickly scheduled appointment. She examined him and took tests but the prognosis did not look good. When the test results were back Dr. Prather explained them to me and given his advanced age & pain my wife and I decided to have him put down. Especially at this difficult time, Dr. Prathers kindness and empathy were evident as she went out of her way to make Charlies passing easier for both him and us. My wife and I are now focused on Gunner, our younger rescue, who has added so much to our lives since we adopted him. Dr. Prather will continue to be his veterinarian along with another rescue someday when we are ready. PS Thanks also to the staff and we have not met Dr Callen but the well run clinic and kind staff is a reflection on him as well. PPS Dennise helped out about 3 months later on April 26 as Gunner had a suspect foxtail grass seed in his elbow pad & we realized this 1 day before our 5th wedding anniversary trip. Dennise called to all, remaining appts for the day and thankfully someone canceled. Foxtail grass is new to us having recently moved to Chico and it is potentially quite serious if youre not already aware so please look it up if youre unfamiliar.

Dr Prather is the best Doctor we have ever seen. She is the most kindest and caring person in the world and that includes all the wonderful the nurses and other staff. They are extremely nice, helpful and I would recommend this clinic to everyone in Chico and surrounding areas. Thank you for Taking care of our Dearest cat Meatball, she is 100% better now and back in great spirits after all these years (or so it seems lol). Thanks for everything you all have done for us and again a special Thank you to Dr Prather! P.S. I moved my services from Chico Hospital for Cats when Dr Prather moved, she really does make the entire hospital a different experience.

I didnt come to Chico Animal Hospital under the best of circumstances so my personal experience (reason for being there) wasnt a happy one. However, the staff were very helpful, calm, and compassionate. They gave me time to grieve and offered kind words of support. They were quick to work me into their schedule and the prices were reasonable. The clinic itself was clean and well kept. I didnt notice an overly powerful animal smell on walking in. Thank you Chico Animal Hospital staff for making an unpleasant experience as pleasant as it could be.

Some people dont understand how hard being a veterinarian is. People who are animal lovers go to school for years to learn how to save animals lives, thinking theyll get their dream job only to find that they might have to end up putting countless beloved pets down. This exacts a terrible toll on the minds of our animals heroes. I just want to say from the bottom of my heart, thank you for everything you do for our pets, for our families.

Im travleing thru and my small dog has had an upset stomach. I call to see if they have available time to see him. They are not taking new clients. Really? They dont have time to see my dog once? I dont live here... probably will never be here again. I have traveled all over this country and never been refused service because they arent taking new clients. New client is irrelevant when it is a one time thing. Thanks for nothing!

Love this place, the staff is extremely friendly & helpful and Dr. Callen is AMAZING! Its pretty rare to meet people that are doing exactly what they are meant to do in life and he is one of those people.
