On the 28 th of July 2011, I was shot in the neck with a pellet rifle at six foot range. The pellet went through my trachea and esophagus and lodged in-between the cartilage of my vertebrae. The surgeon said I was 1 mm from being a quadriplegic. In a four hour emergency surgery, they were able to repair both sides of the esophagus but the back side of the trachea was frayed from the pellet exit so they pulled a slice of neck muscle and inserted it in-between the two organs to provide separation and prevent fusing of the two organs. The entrance hole was left open to reduce pressure and let it heal on it’s own. The pellet was removed and a drain was installed to reduce fluid build-up. I was on a breathing tube for four and a half days and held in heavy sedation. I knew after the surgery that I would eventually be OK, but we had no idea how long his recovery would take and what lasting effects we could expect. I was on a scholarship to play soccer for Central College in Pella Iowa and was due on campus August 17th, twenty-one days after being shot. In a conversation with the surgeon, my parents asked him what the likelihood was of me making it to school on time, realizing that soccer would be out of the question. His response was, “You have to realize, your son almost died. It seems improbable that he will be able to make that date”. His advise was to look into local community college and postpone attending Central until Spring semester. My parents called Doctor Liz immediately after the surgery. From their past experience, they knew that her timely intervention after a trauma was critical. Doctor Liz arrived the following morning and she went to work on me with Reiki treatments and did so every day until I was and was released from the hospital. Morley contributed emotional support to my parents and his wisdom on the benefits of magnesium and as a result they made sure my magnesium levels were high. My parents said as Dr. Liz worked you could see my body shake sporadically followed by a profound peace in the hours after and with each session the peace and relaxation became more pronounced. The ventilator was removed on August 2nd and I was up and walking that night. I was released from the Hospital on August 4th, exactly one week from the day I was shot and walked out on my own power. We headed straight to Dr. Liz’s office where I continued my treatments every day until I left for college on August 16th. In my follow-up visit before leaving for college, the Surgeon shaved off another week from my return to no restrictions play with his team. I was cleared to play on September 12th and started the rest of my games that season. There is no doubt in my mind that the additional magnesium, the prescribed nutritional supplements and treatments from Dr. Liz, assisted my body’s natural healing abilities and led to this amazing recovery. I completely recommend Dr. Liz and Morley Robbins.

On September 4th of 2009, I had a cycling accident that had me go over the handlebars at about 15 miles per hour, landing on my head, right shoulder and right side. I was taken to the emergency room and spent 7 hours being diagnosed and misdiagnosed before I was released at 2:00 am. In the ambulance I thought I had broken my shoulders, collar bones, dislocated my hip and left middle finger. I knew I was not paralyzed and did not suffer a concussion as my helmet had done a good job protecting me. After X-rays, CT scans and massive amounts of pain medication I was told I had only dislocated my finger, had no broken bones, I was given crutches and a list of specialists to follow up with. As the night progressed, the pain increased. Being sensitive to drugs and knowing it would be best to get working on these injuries as soon as possible, I called Dr. Liz the next morning, which was a Saturday. Dr. Liz made a house call and worked on me extensively at home. The large amounts of Morphine I had been given the night before had made me feel very sick, disillusioned and far off center. The treatment I received from Dr Liz brought me back to my center very quickly while easing the physical pain, the drug hangover and the emotional stress and anxiety I had from the experience. She made me fell very much at ease and focused on getting better. Most of what I had felt the day before had returned on Sunday morning. I had Dr. Liz come back for more treatment with the same results. For the first few days, I was not able to sleep at all, but with her help, we were able to quiet the internal dialogue and return to a restful state. I visited Dr. Liz several times that week and with each visit I could feel improvement in my physical /emotional condition over all with a few hot spots that seemed persistent. Dr. Liz also prescribed Homeopathic remedies that helped a great deal. Follow up with the specialists revealed I had actually fractured the C-3 vertebrate in my neck, torn a chest muscle and torn a tendon in my hip. Knowing the extent of these physical injuries helped us to focus Dr. Liz’s treatments. After the first week of treatment every day, I went to see Dr. Liz twice a week for treatment for five weeks. I have made steady progress and am very happy that I chose to intervene with Dr. Liz as rapidly as I did. Being aggressive with the early treatment and sustaining it over time are keys to the success I have had. I am very happy to have taken a holistic approach to what has been a very traumatic event. I would recommend this approach to anyone.

Dear Friends at Chiropractic First, I would like to share my experience as a client here: Initially I came to Chiropractic First hoping to find relief from headaches resulting from several neck injuries ( 8 whiplash incidents to be exact). The last injury resulted in headaches that would occur about twice a week. These would start while I was sleeping and couldn’t consciously control how I was positioning my head. They would awaken me feeling like the top of my head was on fire and about to explode. For four years I tried several practitioners using a variety of methods including massage, chiropractic, physical therapy and acupuncture. The work I received, either gave me very short-lived relief or exacerbated the problem. After one or two sessions with Dr. Erkenswick these extreme headaches were gone. Following the doctor’s recommended treatment plan has resulted in steady improvement in comfort level, increased strength and range of motion, and improved sleep and day to day functioning. I have been able to start moderate exercise and yoga again, as well. Included in the plan for my healing journey is a process used here at Chiropractic First that directly checks my body for its response to supplements and various substances. This gives us information about what will best support and strengthen me. Using this information as a guide in choosing nutritional suppliments, I have more energy that I can regularly depend on. Coupling all of this with the thoughtful and enthusiastic way information and ideas are shared, I have found great comfort and assistance in moving forward in my journey. When I experience set backs, like hurting my back or the flu, the effects are not as long lasting or as serious as before and I recover more quickly. I truly enjoy and appreciate the care, kindness and generosity offered by each of the staff members at Chiropractic First and look forward to my appointments!
