Summary: Tipton Lakes Family Dentistry (TLFD) attempted to keep $150.40 from me, above the value that was due them. I was forced to contact the Indiana Dental Association (IDA) in order to resolve the issue. Three months later, I have finally received compensation. Full Story: On March 17, 2016 I went to TLFD for a wisdom tooth extraction (tooth #16). I was assured on the phone when booking the proceedure and in the office at the time of the proceedure that TLFD was an in-network provider for my insurance agency, Guardian, and that my charges would reflect that. However, after the extraction I was handed a bill for $255.00, much higher than the original estimate, and told that they were NOT an in-network provider. Post operation I was in no condition to argue so I paid the bill, determined to clear up the issue later. After several calls between myself, my insurance company, and TLFD, it was determined that they were in-network and I was due a refund of $150.40. However, a representative of TLFD informed me on the phone that "in order to recoup [their] losses" they would be charging me for a panoramic x-ray that was taken at the time at no charge to me, an x-ray that the doctor himself told me I would not be charged for, an x-ray that would not have taken place if I had known they were planning on charging me. My insurance company was no longer able to get involved and two TLFD employees that I was in contact with became increasingly rude, to the point where further communication was pointless. I then contacted the IDA in hopes that opening a peer review case would lead to a resolution. The IDA was extremely helpful and contacted TLFD twice with no response. Finally, a peer review case was opened and the dentist was contacted directly. The peer reviewer was told that there had been a small miscommunication issue and the value would be refunded without further delay. July 5, 2016 I finally received a check for $150.40 and a corrected account history report. I did not receive any apology letter, phone call or email for the "miscommunication issue", poor handling of the issue, rude employees, or time spent trying to resolve the situation. I had no problems with the quality of dentistry practiced at TLFD, but their moral and ethical code as well as their treatment of patients outside of the office is unacceptable. I would highly recommend using any other dentist in the Columbus area.

My appointment on Oct. 5 was frustrating. The front desk folks at sign in were fine. The tech who worked on me informed me they were gong to do a panoramic X ray. I was not asked if I wanted it done or given any information about cost. Once the tech was finished probing and cleaning my teeth, which she did well, she said the doctor would be in shortly. It was nearly 30 minutes before the doctor came and I was surprised it was not Dr. Bartels. The doctor did a brief exam and offered no information about findings, etc. At check out, I was again surprised by the bill. I asked why it was so much more that previous visits and was told it was because of the panoramic X ray. I asked about it was told that it is required every five years and that my records indicate it had been longer than that. I said Ive never had such an X ray. At this point the young man checking me out said he didnt have all the info and that he wanted me to talk to the young woman working at the check out counter. She explained that insurance pays for such an X ray every five years and that they like to keep their records current. She then realized I did not have insurance and was self paying. She explained that the tech probably didnt know I didnt have insurance. She apologized and said she would remove the cost of the X ray from the bill. I said I appreciated it and that I thought patients should always be informed if procedures were going to require additional costs.I also requested that I expect to see Dr. Bartels since he is the one with history with my particular dental challenges. I was told that that request would be noted in the record. I dont often complain, but these several experiences prompted this response. I have always been pleased with the pleasant and professional treatment in the past. On this occasion, it just seemed like there was too much going on which caused the long wait to be seen by the Doctor and the presumption that my insurance would pay for the X ray. I have been accustomed to a smaller dental practice and the individual attention which it affords. Maybe Im spoiled in that regard. But you asked for feedback and Im happy to provide it. Cant say enough about Dr. Bartels and his staff! I have never enjoyed visiting the dentist so when I was searching for one in Columbus, IN, it was really important to me to find a place i was comfortable. A few reasons I chose Dr. Bartels: 1. Hes a local - grew up in the area and is giving back to his community. I like to support local. 2. His office is clean, comfortable and actually quite relaxing. The building itself is quaint and the front office area is nice for kids and adults alike. They have coffee - a Kurig - and I typically make myself one to go after my visit. Several of the dental rooms have a view overlooking a river and trees. Id see birds chirping outside and enjoy the beauty of nature. 3. Hes friendly and his office staff has great customer service. They actually seem to really care and are always in-tune to my needs. I often feel like they go out of their way to help me out. The front office personnel are very friendly and always on top of things. 4. They offer headphones that block out the sounds. This is a huge satisfyer for me. One reason I dont like to visit the dentist is because of the noises of the machines. With the headphones, Im able to watch my favorite TV show while Dr. Bartels works and I cant hear the machines. Ive found myself actually slipping into a nap while Ive been in that chair! 5. Lastely, the service Ive received from Dr. Bartels is outstanding! Ive not felt pain with any of my dental work. Hes cogniscent of your feelings and often asks how you are doing throughout. Ive had crowns put in and a temporary as well. When I lost my temporary while out of town, I had some emergency dental work done and the dentist commented on how great of work Dr. Bartels did! Hes friendly and often remembers my conversations with him, asking how my family is doing. I appreciate this. 6. One other thing - the kids rooms are great! How fun! Im looking forward to taking my little one there after shes 2 and Im sure shell enjoy the room and Dr. Bartels and his staff. Comfortable... Is the best way that I can describe my experience with Dr. Bartels office, expertise and staff. The waiting area is comfortable: It has the feel of a warm, Brown County Inn. I felt relaxed with the cozy furnishings, low lighting and warm feel. The staff continued my comfortable experience: they are warm, friendly, low-drama and knowledgeable. I felt that I was talking with an old friend, and found my first experience with the receptionist to be easy and pleasant as well as professional. Once downstairs, I was impressed with the up-to-date "dental" atmosphere. This area was also very comfortable while simulaneously being very professional and clean. My next experience with the dental staff was as easy and comfortable as the first: warm and friendly while maintaining professionalism and knowledge. Dr. Bartels continued the pleasant visit: I found him to be just as warm & helpful as his staff. He was knowledgeable and sure of himself while also remaining personable, very calm and down-to-earth. All in all, this dental office is complete with everything Ive always wanted in any doctors/dentists office: knowledgeable, yet personable staff; warm & comfortable, yet very professional setting; competant, reliable dentist with a down-to-earth, easy nature.
