5/5 for the STAFF and Dr. Felz (now gone) and Dr Flaming. Past experience with Dr. Felz - one of the best vets we have ever encountered. Logical instructions as to what was needed to keep my cats early kidney disease controlled. Two years later kitty doing great. Dr. Flaming is also great (where is her bio?) Very kind, compassionate, & listens well. Would have understood that recent situation with my cat had become urgent. So, if you have a cat (esp. older, perhaps w/ kidney disease) who cannot tolerate pain meds (had scary reaction on one dose), goes from moderate to severe oral pain overnight, to the point he cant eat and you are told you STILL cant get him in for a dental and possible extraction for 9 days, there are options. In hindsight, I should have asked to speak with Dr. Flaming. She would have listened, understood and gotten him in on an urgent basis. I recognize this was not an emergency, but it had become urgent. Otherwise, try ANKENY ANIMAL AND AVIAN. This clinic was amazing. They agreed to see him, understood immediately the severity of his pain, the urgency of the situation, and why I had grown so concerned overnight. (Cats who dont eat can rapidly develop fatty acid liver disease - and I didnt want to wait 1, 2, let alone 8 more days to see if that happened to my kitty. What was going to change if he is already in this much pain and cant tolerate the only pain med I was offered?) They did the dental the next day (turns out root was exposed apparently because the gum had eroded away just enough to expose it). If you cant get into this clinic, just make sure you pick a vet that has experience and can do dental x-rays. The Dr. at this Ankeny clinic, Dr. Gigler even specializes in dentals and is kind, compassionate and most importantly, listens. Somerset is also highly qualified to handle dentals, but currently is booked out very far on routine dentals. Had I just accepted what I was told and agreed to wait, my kitty 1. Would still be in severe pain, 2. Would still not be eating and 3. by next week would perhaps no longer be with us or be in much worse shape from the stress and pain and not eating? Instead, he is sitting here on my desk purring and eating. Again, he could not eat b/c of the pain. He tried, but then growled at his food. Attempts to convey this to Dr. Rivers simply fell flat. She was not worried that he hadnt eaten for 24 hours. True. But in a day it would be 48 hours, and so on. And, no, he wasnt upset from the bad drug reaction and not eating. He could not eat even though he was hungry due to the pain. Pain had gone from a 2 to an 8 overnight. This was scary. Good thing I found the Ankeny clinic, b/c, literally, as I was in the exam room the next AM, Dr. Rivers called to say she was taking him off the dental the following week even though I asked if I could please have just a few more minutes to see what the Ankeny Doctor wanted to do. She said no. I had much more to say on this, but will leave it here. We love Somerset. Its staff is some of the best and most knowledgeable Ive encountered. It sounds like they often take grief from people on the phone - so dont do that. They are just doing their jobs! This makes them understandably sensitive to folks who sound a bit anxious. I went in to talk to them today and assure them I was never ever upset with them, just very worried about my cat and incredulous as to why I couldnt get him the care he needed. I always treat staff courteously, which is more than I can say for how Dr. R treated me, at a time when I knew something was very wrong with my cat. Dont let this one bad experience of ours stop you from going to Somerset. We still will be going there, but will stick with Dr. Flaming :) I think they are extra busy since they just lost Dr. Felz, but that is no excuse for how my cat and I were treated...rather, not treated by this one person.

Let me save you some time and tell you do not go here. It was the worst vet clinic Ive ever been to. I took my cat there for a uti, and they told me to try to get a urine sample by putting a bit of rice in the box and lock him in a small room with food and water. This did not work. I took him in because they said they can get a urine sample by keeping him throughout the day. They put a syringe in him to try to get the urine four times and never got it. I went to an new vet and it took them one try. They also didnt give him cat food when I said he didnt eat much in the morning and even though they said they would, they never did. Their phones are also NEVER available so dont even TRY get ahold of them unless you wanna keep calling over 15 times. Theyre overly expensive for the quality they give. They didnt get rid of my cats earmites either with the $50 serum they promised would work. I also needed radiographs for my new vet and they said theyd get them emailed soon, and they didnt email it the rest of the day. But of course I couldnt get ahold of them because their phones were busy or off. I told the vet of symptoms my cat had which was a strange tube coming out of my cats genitals, and the vet couldnt come up with any idea as to what it was. When I went to my new vet, they gave me many possible reasons and even did some diagnostic testing. I will NEVER come back here and waste my time. I currently am at Ames Pet Hospital on mortensen and could never be happier.

My husband and I recently moved to Ames and had several people recommend Somerset Vet to us for our mini goldendoodle. In short, our experience with Dr. Felz and the Somerset staff has been fantastic! We waited less than a minute before being shown in to the exam room and saw Dr. Felz immediately. Understanding that our puppy hated standing on the exam table, Dr. Felz conducted the entire exam sitting on the floor with our pup (!) and took the time to answer all of the questions we had. He was so friendly, knowledgeable and made sure that our pup was comfortable before giving him his shots and drawing blood. We had all of our results before we left the office and the vet tech and front desk staff both made sure to ask if we had any additional questions before we left. Weve taken our pup to other reputable vets in Des Moines and none even hold a candle to Somerset. We will never take our pup anywhere else!

We took our 14 year old Boston Terrier to Dr. Felz at Somerset Vet Clinic when she started acting strange and started having siezures. My wife called Dr. Felz, because our regular vet had retired and we didnt know who to call. Our beloved Una was seizing and had fallen, face first, down the stairs. In a panic my wife called and Dr. Felz said, "hang up the phone, get the dog and drive straight here. Well be waiting." They helped to calm both mommy and dog and helped us with a very difficult diagnosis. Our dog had a brain leision and was not going to get better. He even gave us his cell phone number and told us to call any time if there was a problem. When the time came, Dr. Felz helped us say goodbye to our family member and was amazing in the process. We love Somerset Vet Clinic. They treated us and our pet like family from the very first moment. Highest recommendation.
