There is nothing A+ about this company or the services they provide. And their fees? Ridiculous. Our family has been working with A Plus Home Care Services & Supplies of Ankeny and Des Moines, Iowa for the past six months. However, a recent incident with one of the owner of the company, Anne Porter, has brought our working relationship to a screeching halt. First and foremost, A Plus Home Care Services & Supplies charges an upfront $125.00 “Application Fee” before they will do business with you. Meaning, should you choose to hire A Plus Home Care, you will be charged $125.00 for their representative to take down basic information, such as your address, telephone number, date of birth, personal care needs, etc. More to the point, one has to pay a fee for the privilege of becoming a customer. Once you have paid their $125 “Application Fee,” expect to pay $35.00 for their first hour of in-home care service and $24.00 an hour for each additional hour of service thereafter. Example: an eight hour shift of care will cost $203.00. Once you have paid to become a customer, you will receive a booklet/contract outlining the companies guidelines and rules. A brief overview of our experience: Our working relationship took a turn for the worse on day number one, when one of the owners of the company dropped my mother to the floor. Fortunately, my mother was not seriously injured. After employing A Plus Home Care Services & Supplies for a few weeks, we decided to pursue hiring a caregiver of our own because the companies hourly rates were choking us. After running a couple of ads, we soon hired a private caregiver at a fraction of the price. From there, we utilized A Plus as a backup (in the event our caregiver had a personal emergency) and for special situations that required an extra hand, such as bathing. But even bathing proved to be too expensive after the company refused to assist our caregiver in giving our mother a bath. Instead of A Plus Home Care Services & Supplies sending one representative to assist our caregiver with a bath, the company refused to bathe our mother if our caregiver was involved, and instead insisted upon providing two of their own representatives … at twice the price ($35/hour x 2). Having been placed over a barrel, we had little choice but to pay $70 for our mother’s baths. The final straw for us was when the owner of the company, Anne Porter, came into our home to give our mother a bath. While here, Anne gave our private nurse her business card and offered our caregiver a job with A Plus. Bottom line: The owner of this company came into our home to recruit our nurse. The booklet/contract A Plus provides its customers upon application (upon paying the $125 “Application Fee”) clearly states that under no circumstances can a customer hire an A Plus Home Care Services & Supplies employee. And yet the owner of the company violated her own contract by coming into our home and recruiting our employee. When I learned of this, I called A Plus Home Care Services & Supplies and left a message for Anne on the companies voicemail. I explained why I was calling and I stated that I wanted the $125 “Application Fee” refunded immediately. My call went unreturned and I received no check in the mail. A week or so later, I called Anne’s personal cell number and spoke with her directly. During this conversation, I explained that in light of her actions, coupled with the fact that she violated her own contract by attempting to hire my caregiver, I no longer felt comfortable having her or her representatives in my home ever again. Furthermore, I explained that since we would no longer be doing business with A Plus Home Care Services & Supplies again, I wanted the “Application Fee” returned immediately. Anne’s response: “the application fee is non-refundable.” To date, we have received no refund of the $125 “Application Fee” we paid upfront in order to do business with A Plus Home Care Services of Ankeny and Des Moines, Iowa.
