Parking used to be a problem but not anymore! Driving 126 miles round trip for a 15 minute test is not fun though. Traffic on the road leading to the turn off to HWY 6 is unbelievably congested all the time! Good and bad care can be had at this hospital. The food offerings in the cafeteria is worse than an Army mess hall. This VA hospital has a good partnership with the Iowa Medical and other surrounding Hospitals but Ive only seen ONE world renowned Doctor here in my twenty years of receiving care here. It has been my experience most physicians and surgeons who are loaned to the VA hospital are either Residents or Med Students (probably in their last years of med school). But remember my fellow Vets, your care is up to you in this system. You really need to be the center of defining what you need from the VA system, and dont let define it for you.

The Pulmonary department at the Iowa City Vets Hospital is staffed with incompetent quacks that almost killed my mom multiple times due to utter incompetence (nurses not knowing how to operate high flow oxygen equipment) which they then lied and tried to cover up. After their incompetence left my mom in a medically induced coma, an ICU nurse pulled me aside and told me that my mom had no business being treated by this VA Hospital as they werent equipped to handle someone with complex lung disease and that I needed to get her transferred to University of Iowa to save her life. It took screaming to mountain tops to get her to UIHC (the VA had already written her off for dead and wanted to send her to a nursing home). UIHC treated her properly and had her out of a coma in 3 days. She would be dead many times over had we left her at the VA.

I have kidney issues that make the use of dye to assist doctors in surgery. I needed a stent in my carotid artery so a vascular team headed by Dr Katragunta brought me in a day early to super saturate my system to lessen the effect of dye. On the day of surgery Dr K successfully completed the surgery using less dye. In the ICU the nurse team was more professional than Ive ever experienced at any prior hospital, civilian or military. Not only was the surgery successful but my kidney numbers actually improved by .3 points! Those who critize VA patient treatment should have their hospital should connect with the Iowa City VA for recommendations for on how to improve their issues. Tim Flynn

On September 27th I took my brother Terrence Fugate to the VA in Iowa City. He had fallen and broken his wrist but also was having a problem with his foot. I dont know if the Dr. who took care of him first name was Blake or last name in the Orthopedic Dept. He went above what my brother expected. He not only took care of my brothers arm but also saved us a lengthy visit to the emergency room by treating his foot. This is the second time I have taken him and saw the excellent service he received by Dr. Blake as well as his nurse. Keep up the good work, it is truly appreciated.

I have dealt with 6 other VAMCs in the nation. This one, despite some of its mishaps (which happens everywhere some time or another), this is hands down the best VAMC I have experienced. They hire based on ability not who is BFFs with someone else or who is family, etc... The nepotism in other VAMCs is a huge problem - the care for veterans goes down and their mistakes covered up and lied about. i.e. Phoenix, Houston, Dallas just to name a few. I am grateful for this VAMC. they treat me well and so far do the same for the veterans I represent for my county.

I had a cardiac cath and stent put in on January 4th, 2017. I was kept over night in a private room. Im behind the times. I didnt know the VA hospital had private rooms. My gratitude and thanks to everyone at the VA. The nurses, doctors, everyone were excellent. I dont know what I would do without the Iowa City VA Hospital.

I was recently admitted to the VA Hospital in Iowa City for influenza A and pneumonia. The care I received was top notch! Doctors and nurses were attentive to my needs and told me everything that they were going to do. The food was good too! I highly recommend this hospital.

Top notch hospital my brother recently had surgery to remove plaque from his carotid artery. Cant say enough about the outstanding service, and the friendly, helpful staff.... truly a model hospital, that civilian hospitals could learn.... Tony Land

I dont think that Ive ever had such wonderful care from so many doctors at any given time! Truly, with all the things that has happened within the VA system, this particular VA medical center has most definitely been the most

THE BEST OF THE BEST. IT IS THE BEST, CLEANEST, MOST COURTEOUS Veterans Hospital I have been in. I had my father there for almost a week and it was WONDERFUL. VERY MUCH RECOMMENDED.

Try to speak with a person via phone. Even the travel Dept is close when you inside the hospital. Thats a indication they dont want to deal with travel concerns.

Exactly what one should expect from the VA. Apathy, ignorance, and incompetence. Meds are either late every time theyre refilled or they dont show up at all.

Great sandwich spot. It is the VA though, so there is a lot of room for improvement still.

Unfortunately their scheduling leaves a lot to be desired. In other words, it sucks.
