BEWARE: AVS OPERATES MORE LIKE AN EMERGENCY ROOM THAT WILL "TREAT" A PROBLEM FOR THE SHORT TERM ONLY BUT OFFER NO VIABLE LONG-TERM CARE OPTIONS, EVEN FOR MINOR (IE: NOT TERMINAL) CONDITIONS. I WHOLE HEARTEDLY DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS VET TO ANYONE! YOU CAN GET YOU PET SPAYED/NEUTERED FOR FREE OR AT A LOW COST, GOOGLE"SPAY BATON ROUGE." - Read below to see why I will never take any of my animals to AVS: 1. Although the staff (vet assistants & reception - NOT the vets) are friendly and helpful, I found the vets to be uninterested in the health of my cat from the very start. 2. Over the 9 month period when I took my cat to AVS for a chronic condition (swelling, redness, and infection of his chin only with no other symptoms), I was never able to get anyone to tell me exactly what was wrong with my cat. In other words, I was never given the name of a medical condition and was simply told that the problem was "an immune thing." I had my pet tested for FHIV and Feline leukemia several times, to be sure that his immune system was not compromised. I also only use ceramic food & water dishes. I also asked about the possibility of the symptoms being caused by allergies and was pretty much blown off. 3. The treatment of choice, regardless of which AVS vet I saw, was a high-dose steroid shot and antibiotics. I repeatedly asked different AVS vets if there was any long-term treatment option, since my cat is under 1 year-old and I worry about how a biweekly steroid shot would affect his internal organs and overall health. I was told that surgery was the only option, but no further information was provided. When I brought up the fact that I was bringing my pet in every 2-3 weeks for the same condition (basically as soon as the steroids wore off the condition came back in full force), I was told there werent any other options and that I would have to continue making biweekly appointments for my cats condition (which, let me remind you, they cant or wont name) FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE! 4. I was spending, on average, $60 bucks every 2-3 weeks (appointment cost, shot cost, antibiotic prescription cost) for 8-9 months! NOT CHEAP!!!!! And the condition never went away!

The great thing about this is that its inexpensive. Ill bring my kitten for check-ups and to get prescriptions; however, Im not too comfortable trusting them with something like a surgery. They seem to cater more to dogs than cats. I was prescribed an antibiotic for him and it wasnt until a few days in that I read the box and it read, "for dogs only." Then when my kitten got hurt I had to take him to the emergency veterinarian. They checked his temperature as is standard and found that he had a fever in addition to leg pain. I told the vet hed gotten vaccinations that afternoon. She said it was uncommon for kittens to get a fever and that you see it in dogs, which made me wonder about what was in it. The bottom of the bill did say that the medicine may cause fever; however, I was happy when the emergency vet prescribed an antibiotic for dogs and cats. I had to pay a little more for the emergency service but I did get to experience what a higher level of care looks like. As for the staff, the vets seem to rotate their services. There are different ones on different days. Some of them are really good. Theyre attentive and very nurturing. But there are a couple that Ive found to be quite rude. And some of the assistants are a bit dismissive. Im not a vet so I cant speak definitively about how they diagnose but I sometimes wonder if they need to probe deeper. For example, for my dads cat, we took her in for shots and I told the assistant, when asked, that she also had pain when we touched her near the rear. She just brushed it off as something else and said not to worry about it. Still, I told the vet. She checked it out and indeed there was pain. Then she said it was arthritis and prescribed some medicine. And I wondered, can you tell just by looking!? Maybe you can. But it seemed to be correct because the cat felt better after the medication.

It just melts my heart when I think about how wonderful AVS is. You can tell when someone is passionate about what they do and that it is not all about a job and money for them. A few months ago my husband and I rescued what appeared to be a black lab mix that was gonna be put down from an animal shelter. Anyways, we got the dog home and went to bathe her only to notice that underneath the dog collar she had on there was a phone cord that someone had put on her which had dug into her neck. I guess it had been there so long that her flesh had begun to heal around it. At first I thought I would just get a pair of scissors and cut it but then I said well she might need surgery and some anesthesia of some kind. So I waited till the next morning and I called AVS for help. From the first time the staff person answered the phone everyone was so very nice to us. We were just trying to save an animal and we were really in a tight pinch financially so we could not afford anything really expensive. We were overjoyed that this animal was able to get her first shots, she was dipped for fleas, she received surgery to remove the telephone cord from around her neck and she was given the anesthetic that she needed so she would be comfortable during the surgery. With all these services I think my husband said the bill was about $110.00. I nearly passed out because anywhere else we would have had to put together some type of payment plan. AVS is all about compassion, community, and helping animals and real people in need. I recommend their services ten times over. Thanks to AVS we were able to place that dog with a great family who loves her. GREAT JOB AVS. We will be life-long customers.

At the beginning when I called AVS, the person answering the phone was wonderful and courteous. Then, when my husband and I went in for the appointment, it was AWFUL. My golden retriever (who is about 12 years old) was suffering from glaucoma. The doctor was not very friendly, and didnt even stress the importance or severity of glaucoma in dogs. (We later found out that if it is not treated within a short timeframe, the dog can lose their sight- which ended up happening) They wouldnt give me an emergency referral to the LSU opthamologist. The doctor at Sherwood South Animal Hospital (where we now bring our dog) has since told us that glaucoma is an emergency. AVS treated it like no big deal. On top of that, they werent friendly with my dog (or us for that matter) and when they took my dog to another room, I asked if I could go with her and the doctor pretty much ignored my request by replying in a short manner and continuing on. Who cares if Greco is right next door? You can get pet meds at places like Walmart and CVS. Id rather go somewhere that loves on my animal and treats her with kindness. If you can avoid it, dont go to AVS! I usually dont write reviews on places, but after our horrible experience, and my sweet dog losing her eyesight, I am writing this one. I highly recommend Sherwood South Animal Hospital. Like I said, Id rather go somewhere that loves on my animal and treats her with kindness, and Sherwood South Animal Hospital did that.
