Normally I dont write reviews for Google, but I noticed while looking up the phone number to St Tam Physicians that there were two reviews, both scathing, and felt morally obliged to voice my opinion, since it is dead opposite to theirs. I have consulted Doctor Long numerous times over the last several years, and think hes an outstanding doctor. While Ill see him for whatever complaint or injury I might have, the primary reason Ive been going to him is that I have been traveling extensively throughout Asia and South America. I consider him an excellent resource to ensure that Im protected as much as possible against diseases I might encounter in the tropics. He does volunteer medical work in the tropics annually, and has for many years. His advice has always been well worth listening to and following. While many US doctors only seem to know two words--"Prescription Drugs" and "Operate"--Ive found him to be considerably more broad-minded. Hes recommended OTC remedies that have worked for me, dietary changes, and medical foods. What specifically surprised me about the other reviews were complaints in both that he refuses to prescribe generics and in one case prescribed a time-release capsule which insurance would not cover. Nonsense! When I went from a private executive medical insurance to Medicare. I discovered that drugs my former insurance had covered, werent covered by the government ones. I guarantee that Dr Long has switched prescriptions from brand-name to generic for me, and in one case, switched me from a time-release capsule to a Medicare-covered pill that wasnt--but I suspect the time-release capsule kept the medicine in my system better and really WAS more effective, even though I got the same dosage both ways. I sympathize with the complaints about too many tests, including both blood work and EKGs, but this is certainly NOT limited to Dr. Long. I dont blame the doctors--I blame the malpractice lawyers. Every responsible US doctor--including those who treated me at MD Anderson, the best cancer hospital in the world--drove me crazy with tests, but they HAVE to! With Americas litigation-happy legal system and astronomic malpractice insurance rates, doctors are reluctant to skip recommended tests at recommended frequencies if the potential consequence is a mega-million dollar frivolous lawsuit. Bottom line, if any friend of mine asked me to recommend a Family Practice doctor on the New Orleans Metro Area, I would recommend Dr. Long, every time.

Went in for a medical clearance to return to work for a routine back issue hes treated me for in the past and was referred to a specialist who couldnt see me for a month. I explained this to the Dr. And was met with indifference. In a month, I would not have a job to return to. Evidently, he doesnt care about things like this. I had to pay an urgent Care doctor 3 times the cost of my normal copay to perform an exam that took 3 minutes. Dr. Long didnt even care to perform an exam. I will not return to this network of doctors as all they seem to care about is lining their pockets with specialist referrals

DO NOT! DO NOT! DO NOT! Does not listen and "diagnoses" the same thing for everyone. Refuses to prescribe generics. Insists on blood work every 4 months or will not renew prescriptions - his office gets money for the blood work. He insists on unnecessary tests and x-rays and ignores certain results. Did not tell me I was vitamin D deficient for two years! Said husbands hernia was an infection and prescribed antibiotics that messed up his immune system! He rolled his eyes at my daughter and prescribed drugs that werent even for her issue! My new doctor could not believe what he had done.

Dr. Long was a complete jerk. Do not go to him. He refused to write my rx for the generic brand, and instead wrote me the time released version. When I went to drop it off, the insurance rejected it and without ins it would be $183, when I usually spend $10. I called his nurse and he didnt do anything about it. Now Im stuck with a bill from a worthless doctor AND the EKG which he made me do. The pharmaceutical companies have him wrapped around their finger. Now j cant get my rx filled because I cannot afford it and Ive wasted my time and money going to him.

I have been a patient of Dr. Long for 7 years. He definitely has his peculiarities but I have found him to attempt to care for the "whole" individual. This does mean that at times he will refuse to renew prescriptions without blood work. This is because he has an obligation to monitor the effects certain meds are having on his patients. Also, he has prescribed expensive meds for me before, with the insistence that they are better, but if I have flat out refused them because of expense he will write for the next best thing.

Dr Long can be trusted to address any medical issue professionally and with congeniality. I would recommend him highly.
