2.0 star rating 1/26/2017 First to Review 1 check-in The absolute best eye doctor visit I have ever had was when I had an exam from Dr.Wiener (who the current owner, Michael Diffendall purchased the practice from). My wife gets our family health insurance through the public school system, so I have been incredibly pleased with the small co-pays and outstanding array of services we can get for no charge. When I needed a new contact lens prescription last year, I decided to see who provided eye exams in the network and chose to go elsewhere since, at the time, Dr. Wiener had sent us notice he was retiring. My thinking was, that with him removed from the picture, all eye doctors were equal. Ugh, that isnt the case and the clown I picked up in Fallston was solely fixated on selling daily contact lens to the point he became dismissive of me when I asked for monthly. But that will be another review later on. When my wife told me that Jacksonville Eye Care accepted our insurance, I booked an appointment. The woman on the phone was polite, the emails I sent were followed up on promptly. They asked for my insurance information beforehand to confirm that my eye exam was covered. When I arrived at the office, the on-boarding process was easy and Dr. Diffendall saw me without any delay. I explained to him what I wanted and also went over what it was that I liked about Dr. Wiener. He took the time to explain everything to me, ensured that my prescription was correct and even gave me a test set of contact lens to be absolutely sure I got the right style and strength. When it came time to check out, I assumed there would be a small co-pay (there was, $20) but then came the shock. I was told that there was a $95 dollar contact "testing" fee. Ummm, customer service training moment. Let the patient know about this fee BEFORE you render the service. Yeah, so I get to "test" the contacts for 6 months and make any changes during that time (which I wont be taking advantage of). And yeah, if that was presented to me BEFORE the exam, I would have opted out of it. So what was an excellent exam (easily 5 stars) went off the cliff with the surprise "fee" at checkout. My advice to anyone coming here is to ask that ALL fees be disclosed before the visit with the option of declining them prior to the eye exam. This leaves a really bad taste in my mouth and a serious distrust of any eye doctor. There is a reason one of my mantras is No Surprises. I would suggest that Jacksonville Eye Care embrace this philosophy as well.

I dont typically write reviews but this office is outstanding. I just went for my first visit to Dr. Letts and found her to be genuine, caring and very thorough in her questions and exam. She gave me 3 different kinds of contacts to test and then scheduled a free visit a couple weeks later to see which I liked best. I chose a pair, was fitted and placed an order. When they arrived, I found out that my eye insurance had unexpectedly lapsed and the contacts werent covered. I came to pick them up and Dr. Diffendall apologized on behalf of Jacksonville Eye Care and said they would cover the cost because they didnt recognize my insurance wasnt in place. This was completely unexpected because it was really an oversight on my part too but just goes to show how customer service oriented and friendly the whole staff is. Highly recommend.
