The only reason I gave the hospital even 2 stars was the pre-surgical department was the best I had ever been in; great attitude, I felt we were all on the same page. Then I was wheeled up to my room post-op where I arrived with inexplicable scratch marks over my shoulders/arms. At 4 am I woke up nauseous and in pain and the nurse refused to give me the meds on order for me that we clarified with the doc prior to surgery. My meals consisted of diet coke on a full liquid diet despite ordering off the menu provided me.Substitutes were not offered when I called down about not getting any food and not seeing a clinical dietitian.Seeing a dietitian is mandatory when allergies are listed but I had to have the nurse order one. The clinical dietitian did not come up as should have happened - I was on day 4 of not eating although the tray I ordered magically appeared as they were wheeling me out. A used emesis gauze tube was left on my food stand for 6 hours, an infection control violation. Instead of following doctors orders on meds, the nurse said they could override them by using their judgement. Courtesy was nil. My husband arrived at 10:15 am with no chairs present and he had to sit on the bed for 3 hours, no one offered him a chair and he was too shy to bother the busy nurses.Oh, and the gown was ripped with no way to cover my bare rear (surgical area) and the socks were so long and big I almost tripped(already a fall risk). I shook my feet and the socks were so loose they went flying. Were these the Medicare supplies???? What happened to following regulations? I would have written at least the following citations: Failure to follow therapeutic diet. Failure to provide dietary consultation when indicated in policy. Failure to make a diet manual available to staff on all floors. Failure to follow infection control protocol.Lack of ethical behavior. Allergy diet followed incorrectly (restricted MSG yet no MSG diet in approved Diet Manual and such diet is not evidence based) compromising patients intake after bowel surgery.

When I was admitted to Sparrow Main from St. Lawrence, St Lawrence had just told me to take my own Geodon and given me graham crackers to eat with it because you must take it with food. Geodon is an anti-psychotic/mood stabilizer that puts you OUT, sleeping, for at least six hours. When I arrived at Sparrow main I was unresponsive, and the admitting doctor, Dr. Neiberg, assumed it was because I was a drug addict and gave me two doses of anti-narcotic medicine (which did not wake me up, as Geodon is not a narcotic.) I am supposed to have knee surgery in three weeks, and they are not giving me any pain management while Im here because Dr. Neiberg is convinced Im a drug addict. Im here because I have pneumonia and a blood infection (possibly because when I was admitted three weeks ago with bronchitis they said it was viral and took me off antibiotics and it turned to pneumonia when untreated.) Im pretty sure I picked up the blood infection here. Regardless, I need physical therapy every day, which I havent been getting, I need respiratory treatments every four hours, which I havent been getting, and the service excellence manager I spoke to about my problem, Susan Wisser, told me that because I was "being snide" with her, she was "being snide" back to me. They cannot understand that I am receiving poor customer and medical service and have decided to treat me like a pariah because I am also a mental health patient. The nurse on the 7th floor critical, Amber, told me "if youre a mental health patient, why arent you at St. Lawrence?" Very rude and very discriminatory. Im not a mental health patient, Im a pneumonia and blood infection patient with mental health issues. I will never go to this hospital again. Id drive to UofM Ann Arbor before Id come here again. If you HAVE to come here, request that you NOT get Dr. Neiberg.

While the care my daughter received when she was there was good I absolutely do not like the financial department at this hospital. We had a bill obviously after being in the ER and we have a high deductible Ins. plan. However, we paid $200 at the time of service and $50 a month every time we receive the bill in the mail. Today some lady called from Sparrow and said that our $50 payment was not enough and to enter into a payment agreement we now had to pay $172 with 3% interest. I told her we have been paying what we can afford which is the truth and I could not pay $172 a month. I told her Id enter into a payment plan if we could keep the payment at $50. She said no they wouldnt do that. They would keep accepting the $50 for as long as they could but eventually it will be turned over to collections. WAY TO GO Sparrow! Seriously, for someone not paying a single dime towards there bill I could see that action however to someone who is actually giving you money? Come on! Also, what the hell is the interest for? Youre not paying my bill and then expecting me to pay you back....what a bunch of crooks! Youre crooks especially because you bill for the ER which INCLUDES the cost of the doctor that came in the room, then the doctor can also sperately bill you (which he did), THEN laboratory services ALSO billed us. So what exactly did the ER specifically do for us to charge us $2,500 (and thats JUST the ER total, not all the other ones added with it)? Well, they gave my daughter Tylenol and a Popsicle while we waited for FOUR hours to be seen, then later find out the doctors "diagnosis" was wrong AFTER our regular doctor sent for medical records and the lab reports. Like I said Ill continue to make my $50 payment but if it gets sent to collections...good luck seeing any money paid to that debt!

I was taken to this hospital from work in an ambulance from a fall I had at work. The room that I was put in only had the most minimal basic monitoring system. They found I had a broken knee cap. They pumped me full of pain meds and released me. My husband is the only person who was available to pick me up. We live in St. Johns, MI, and obviously having been brought to the hospital by ambulance there was no way I could get home. My husband had to go to a doctor appt. while I was still being treated, so no one was there when I was released. He thought they would be keeping me overnight, so he took my purse, clothes (which were useless as the paramedics had to cut them off me), and everything I had with him so it would not get stolen or lost. When they released me they put me in a wheel chair (mind you they had put a leg immobilizing brace on me), and pushed me out in the waiting room. The only clothing I had was a t-shirt they gave me and a pair of paper pants. I have never been more humiliated in my life, sitting in a waiting room full of sick people, drugged up with no protection at all. I had to ask them prior to being released to please X-ray my other knee to be sure it was not broke also. I had no phone or any way of contacting my husband, so I had to push myself out into the main lobby to try to find a way to reach my husband to come get me. Never have I had such a horrible experience in a hospital before. My husband is going to be checking with an attorney to see if they can be sued for the lack of, and the horrendous treatment I received at this facility. I will never be taken to this hospital again, and will be advising anyone else not to go there either. HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!!!
