This facility with respect to drug and or alcohol addiction is for detoxing only. The insurance companies, depending on the one you have, will only allow 7 days for detox (even if your policy said 28 days) which may or may not be enough for your love one. I don’t believe it was enough for my child (I don’t want to identify gender). A littler back round, he/she is in their early 20ties and ranked very high in college. It is my opinion that any advertisements about or from Carrier Clinic implying that you could expect treatment after detox is very misleading nor do I feel you would want to have your love one treated there afterwards if you could. Our experience their beaks down as follows, the admitting process took two and a half hours. No one informed us of this or how it was going to work nor was the admitting individuals very helpful about explaining what would happen once he/she was admitted. Our child was sick when we brought him/her there with an overdose in addition to poisoning him/herself (we didn’t know about the poisoning at that point) with non-aspirin pain pills which are extremely deadly to the liver. They did not find this out to the next day. There coordination with us was poor. They took her/him to Somerville hospital and let us know after the fact. When we called to make sure her things were taken care of, in practically a keepsake that she had since he/she was a baby they assured us it was safe, they then lost it. Carrier has a family program on weekends where you come in and watch a few films and can ask questions. I found it very informative and the person running it to be very helpful. After which you have a one hour group session with your love one and others which also was informative. The bottom line is that New Jersey lacks any first class facilities for drug treatment so don’t expect it from Carrier but if you have to take your love one there it’s ok but don’t expect too much. For us it was less than 20 minutes away. If we choice an in house treatment center it would be somewhere else. Most likely out of state but unless your love one is ready to clean themselves up none of this will help and that seems not to happen too often unless they go through great social and physical destruction (I hope I am wrong about this one). In addition they will most likely have to go to meetings probably at night for the rest of their lives. I believe that my child’s chance of having a bright future after such a good start is almost all but gone and his/her chances of surviving this for more than 10 years is very low. I wish anyone who reads this much better luck.

After reading the reviews i totally agree after experiencing it with my own family member. I have expressed my concerns with the social worker on several occasions about what was going on with my family members situation only to fall on deaf ears. I was constantly told we dont see any of that behavior and when they spoke to my family member who was good at telling them what they wanted to hear they came to the decision she didnt need the level of care that they provided so they are going to release her. Several times i expressed how she was not ready to come home yet! Her medical history clearly documented what was going on with her. They kept insisting they didnt see any of these behaviors. Why would the drs from the other hospital from which she was transferred from make up things or would the family?? They asked me how do you think she is and i again told them she needs more help how she is still confused and acting strange. Once again they came to the same conclusion that she didnt meet there reqirements for their level of care. But the best part is that they wanted to send her to another facility for 5 days a week for help but yet they said she didnt need the level of care at their facility. If she needs 5 days a week part time hospitalization how can she be stable enough to come home? Wait it gets better they expect the family to provide transportation back and forth to this new facility since it doesnt provide transportation! I told the social worker this is unacceptable since i have a child who requires 24 hour care because of his health problems i am unable to do that. The answer i received was thats the best she can do . I told her if thats the case my family member will go back to the strange behaviors she was exhibiting and the social worker said i was probably right she agrees with me! I asked her what then and her response was bring her back and abruptly ended the conversation. I would do anything i mean anything for my family member but my hands are tied. I am only one person dealing with two people that require both my undivided attention. I cannot be physically in two places at once! I expected more from this facility. Do your research before you decide upon this place for help!

Dont judge a book by the cover. The exterior of this facility is beautiful. But the care and interior is terrible. The adolescent unit is freezing cold, because the heat doesnt work. The staff is friendly, but only care about your mental health. If you have a medical emergency youre better off not telling them. All they can do is give you motrin, take your vitals, and set up an appointment with the medical doctor, who is not readily available in the case of emergency. For this whole facility, there is only one medical doctor on staff at a time. It took hours, for me to be taken to an emergency room, while I was suffering chest pain. The doctor was only available for the NEXT DAY. While at this facility I was not treated as a priority. The psychiatrist doesnt deserve a medical degree. What psychiatrist tells patients their life will end in despair? What psychiatrist laughs at patients suffering from drug withdrawal symptoms? This facility keeps patients who arent going to harm themselves or others, and sends patients who will to other facilities or to an outpatient care. When youre here its like youre being tortured. You have the right to stay in your room all day, but if you do theyll keep you longer because youre isolating yourself. EVEN IF YOURE IN PHYSICAL PAIN. Patients here just do group therapy 3+ times a DAY, which isnt helpful to anyone as individual therapy is a rare occurrence. This is also one of the few none Co ed facilities in NJ, which truly doesnt benefit the patients, because youre just listening to the same sob stories of the few other patients each time you have group. Other activities are rare here, you spend the day in the lounge or in groups. Board games are available in the lounge, and for the most part thats about it. Every once in a while youll have karaoke, and art. They advertise for an enriched environment but thats not whats there. This facility should really be shut down or improved A LOT. Its not suitable for anyone. If you have a loved one who needs help, this isnt the right place.
