Weve been pet-patients since Dr Housten took over our 25+ years w Dr. Wainwright who retired - Village Vet Damascus. Were delighted & pleased with Dr Houstens obvious caring & compassion & knowledge. Recently, one of our older cats, Tilly developed serious illness, fiinally diagnosed late stage lung cancer and we had to say goodbye. Dr Housten assured us that was time to say goodbye. Tilly spent 12 years on Larrys lap while he engineered every 911 & ER radio system in the PacNW. Motorolas mascot! She purred / slept, helping Larry keep calm & focused. Tillys responsible for helping everyone keep safe= able to call 911- Larrys a cancer survivor so loosing Tilly to cancer seriously hit home. So, it was a very sad day for us having to say goodbye. Barlow Trail/Dr Housten deserves a full 5 star review! The staff have always been very kind, friendly/ caring except for the one thing weve already discussed w Dr Housten. We understand why as a few bad people has forced this, but would like to see a changes about their policy of prepaying for euthanasia. (that part gets a negative 5 star) The rules need to bend for those long term patients & have the means to pay. Well be facing this again, may be soon. Tillys sibling, Bitty-Boo is seriously ill w bacterial infection & isnt improving w meds. I wish they had after hours on-call...having to take Bitty-Boo elswhere or be seen by ER clinic isnt good as they dont know him or whats happening= you never know who youll get to see then. Newly grads work there. But isnt always bad. PS... I read Sara Js review and how she felt the girls were whispering, behind backs because theyre lesbians... if this happened, I would be very shocked. I dont want to minimize or be dismissive about what you wrote as I wasnt there. I do understand that sometimes those who are LBGT/trans, suffer low self esteem, worry/ believe others are making ugly remarks or passing judgement of them. and YES, people get ugly, believe they have the right to pass judgement BUT, From what Ive learned, from my numerous NUMEROUS visits to both Dr Houstens clinics, her staff have ALWAYS been 99.9999% respectful, caring, kind and helpful to everyone. Ive spent hours sitting in their front waiting area. NEVER ever witnessed any of the staff acting ugly towards anyone! Perhaps they were whispering about something totally different, had nothing to do with you or your being lesbian. Dr Housten is a very caring, kind hearted soul. Have you met her? I think if you had, youd feel very different than what you believe happened. I dont think she would approve of any of her staff making ugly judgmental/criticism remarks, whispering or statements about or towards any of her pet parent-patients! Im sorry that people do pass judgement on those who are "different" than what they believe to be normal...but Ive not seen any of this at Barlow Trail office or Village Vet and weve been going there since 1989! We have 5 cats (2 are very old) one has dementia and 2 older dogs and so we need good veterinary care that is close by. I hope you will return there and maybe talk to Dr Housten personally about what happened and how you felt then. From what Ive witness they all really do care! Sara J, thank you for caring enough to seek medical help for Gods creatures! ANYONE who cares enough to care for Gods little defenseless creatures proves you are a good soul! Lesbian/LBGT or what people believe to be "normal"- deserve to be treated like they wish to be treated! My husband and I are both committed Christians and we do our best to follow Jesus example and that only God knows ones heart and only HE has the right to make/pass judgement towards anyone as only HE knows why we are the way we are. No one is without sin and NO ONE is perfect except God. Our motto is: Dont hate me for my sinning differently than you! also: No one will remember what you said to them, but they will remember how you made them feel! Id rather have snarky receptionist w the best doctor than have wonderful staff, but a Dr Killzall Dr Kavorkian!

I also thought that Barlow Trail was a great place till my cat had a "Serious" issue. I trusted that they had the best interest at heart for my cat but boy was I wrong, after paying almost 700 for tests and supervision they still could not tell me what was wrong with my cat. To top that off, I had to return the next day for a follow-up visit per the drs request and they had enough $$$ in their eyes to charge me for ANOTHER visit. I do NOT believe that they are in business for the "concern/care" of anyones pets but that they are in it for all the money. I would not recommend or suggest this office to anyone who "LOVES" their pets. After I paid the second office visit, they informed me that I needed to be referred to a completely different doctor. Obviously they had charged me all they could suck out of me before they said "Sorry, nothing more we can do for you and we are not really sure whats wrong with your cat, so here go to this doctor and they can help you" I was so upset and concerned for my cat that they could see it in my eyes,so they "Socked" it to me right in the wallet. The worst part is I am still at the point of not knowing whats wrong with him, even after I paid over 700.00 to what I thought was a trust worthy vet. DONT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I DID AND POSSIBLY LOOSE YOUR PET!

We were working temporarily at Mt Hood Village and I took a co-workers recommendation for this clinic. My experience with the veterinarian and the tech were fine, although we had to wait approximately an hour for our first visit. I do have a problem with the fact that they advertise they accept Care Credit but, when I offered that for payment, I was told it has to be a $300 minimum or they will run the card for $300 and apply it as a "credit" to your account. I also understand they want to make a profit on meds prescribed, but when the charge for a generic thyroid medicine is $60 more than it is for the same medication ordered online or from my previous clinic, I believe that is gouging. Finally, when we were ready to return to the east coast and were 50 miles away, I called and asked for a prescription for the levothyroxine to be mailed to me or to have it called in to a pharmacy. They refused saying confusion had arisen in the past. If my internist has no problem calling medication in to Walgreens and none of my previous vets have had this problem, I believe the problem to be theirs. There always seems to be an reason for noncooperation. My recommendation is to find another place more affordable and more cooperative.

I cannot say enough great things about this small clinic. It came recommended by my neighbor when I was upset about other clinics, including the specialist by the way, who kept wanting to charge me to run more test and still not helping my dog. Dr. Brenner chose to look at the test that had already been done, suggested a trial of something completely different then what we had been doing. Well, my dog is finally doing better and steroid free! If I there is a catch it was that they were busy and I did have to wait about 10 minutes past my appointment to get in. That is less than I always have to wait to see MY doctor, and it was easy to see why they were as busy as they were. From now on i am going not going anywhere else! On a side note, my neighbor had actually recommended me to The Village Vet, but when I called the day that worked for me, Dr. Brenner was working at Barlow Trail, apparently owned by the same person the veterinarian works at both.
