My boyfriend and I recently took our dog to the Palmetto Animal Hospital. We were not sure whether our dog had been bit by a snake or if she was hit by a car. We needed answers and we wanted to know what we could do to help her. When we first arrived everyone was very nice. However, once we took our dog into the exam room and the vet came in and looked at her, just looked at her, she said that she was going to go and make a “treatment plan” for her and she would be right back (the treatment plan was an estimated bill). A short time later the tech was sent back into the room and told us that everything on the list was what they could do to help our dog, and she went down the list telling us about everything that was on there (without letting us look at the paper). She said that they do not offer payment plans and that everything had to be paid upfront in order for them to treat our dog. She said that if we could not afford to pay the amount we could just take her home with us and let her die, but that we needed to think about her quality of life, or we could have her put down. Mind you she is saying this without even examining our dog to tell us what is wrong! She then handed us the paper and walked out of the room. The bill was for 556.00! They were charging us to do a heartworm test and x rays and blood work, medicine for ticks and fleas. On the sheet of paper was a place for us to sign, saying that the cost was just an estimate and if they felt like more tested needed to be ran, they would add those to the bill as well. All we were wanting to know is what was wrong with our dog and see if they could help us take care of her! I was so upset, my heart was completely broken. We decided that we could not afford to pay that much money to maybe not even get answers. So we decided to leave. We were fortunate enough to be able to get in touch with a vet from Kingstree who was on call and would meet us at her office to look at our dog. Dr. Linlei Ward at Four Square Vet Care, was amazing!! Dr. Ward met us at her office and thoroughly looked our dog over and told us that she was hit by a car. Dr. Ward was able to examine our dog and tell us that she had a broken spin, without running 556.00 dollars of unnecessary test. A simple examination like Dr. Ward offered, answered our questions. Dr. Ward also offered to run an x-ray but told us the x-ray would only confirm what she knew, and she did not want to charge us for that. Dr. Ward gave us medicine for her and was completely compassionate and was genuinely concerned about the welfare of our dog! Dr. Ward also was not just trying to get money out of us. We paid 3x less than what we were going to pay at Palmetto Animal Hospital and that was just for test to be ran! I was completely disappointed and will NEVER go back to that place! However, Dr. Ward was amazing and I would definitely recommend her to friends and family and anyone wanting genuine and compassionate pet care.

My pets were abused and I was chastised for protesting!!! After a regular dental cleansing, a tech told me that my sweetest cat was a "bad kitty" and proceeded to show me a screen shot on her cell phone of clearly terrified cats. The tech (Ashley H) laughed. Dr Burnett was in the room and kept contradicting the tech, saying that my cat was not a bad kitty. When he saw the screen shot of the terrified cats, he took the cell phone and made the tech put it away and quickly exited the room. When I got my cats (two had the cleansing done) home they were traumatized and in extreme pain, salivating excessively. They could not eat and hid for three days. I told the staff and the veterinary corporation about the incident. It fell on deaf ears. By then Id been a client since 2008 and spent a fortune on my pets. I made it clear that I did not want that tech (Ashley H) to touch my cats and that info was placed in all three of my cats charts. A year later, the day of a scheduled dental procedure which included an extraction, I was told that the abusive tech (Ashley H) would be handling my cat?!?!?! Needless to say, I was upset and declined to have her abuse my cat again. The appointment was rescheduled w/Dr Anderson and my cat was taken care of and in no trauma or pain. I paid the bill then was treated disrespectfully, talked down to, chastised and accused of bad behavior by a young man with a serious attitude problem claiming to be the manager, whom Id never seen before. I found reviews by Hill B. and KT K. to be right on. I will be taking my cats and money elsewhere. If you have a problem with pet abusers, I suggest you do so also. Its too bad this veterinary practice avoids dealing with an animal abusing employee and "shoots the messenger".

Update! I now have 5 dogs and 3 cats. A few days before my visit with Dr, Burnett, we noticed a rash on the abdomen and groin area of my 1 yr old Pitt mix. It was raw and inflamed. Since the rash was discovered late at night, I applied cortisone to it and called Palmetto Vet the next morning. Upon entering the vets office the next morning with Raider and a second pet who needed a nail trim, I was immediately greeted by the staff and taken into an exam room. While I waited about 10 minutes to see Dr, Burnett, the nail trim was done immediately. Dr. Burnett examined the dog and gave me a script which resolved the rash withing 5 days. The visit lasted less than a half hour and my dogs was taken care of. What else can you ask for besides timely service and a healthy pet. Great experience. I have seven pets (4 dogs and 3 cats), all but one have been to Palmetto Vet. I would definitely recommend that you should request to see Dr, Burnett. He is great with my pets. He spends time examining them and listens to my concerns. While there with one pet, he shows genuine concern and asks about the other pets who have been in to see him. A year ago, my 6 year old Rottie became ill very quickly on a Sunday evening. I called the service and received a call back from Dr. Burnett. He met me at the office, but unfortunately, my Diesel had died on the way to the office. Dr. Burnett showed compassion to myself and both of my sons. I would recommend this practice, but ask for Dr. Burnett

This was my second time here and was very disappointed. My first time was with Dr. Gibbs...I felt that she was good (not great, but I figured as good as I would find in a smaller "city") so I went back. This time I saw Dr. Burnett. The wait was long, both outside and inside of the exam room. The staff werent very interactive or interested in either me or my dog (which I consider bad business practice if you are trying to keep clients and get referrals). The "exam" consisted of weighing my dog, asking if there was anything I was concerned about, and running hands over his back and hips. Dr. Burnett didnt check his eyes, teeth, ears, legs...and he almost forgot to even listen to his heart. When I listed my concerns, he pretty much dismissed them as soon as they were out of my mouth. Horrible exam....and I was charged $45 + the cost of vaccinations and medicine to "try". I also do not like the fact that they take the animals to the back to administer the shots/bloodwork, etc. This has never been the case whenever I have gone to any other vet clinic. Overall, this is not the quality of care I want or expect to receive for an animal that I consider a part of my family. Perhaps if you only want the bare minimum for outside animals/working animals, this may be the place for you.
