Dr. Chau of Family Veterinary Hospital of Stone Ridge is a top notch veterinarian who takes a holistic approach to the health of your pet. If you are reading this review you probably treat your pet as a member of your family and I can give this practice the highest marks for doing so as well. When I brought my sheltie in (for what would be diagnosed as pancreatitis), Dr. Chau looked over the entire animal and immediately noticed some issues with weight distribution that will come to affect his health later on. Family Veterinary Hospital of Stone Ridge is a small family owned practice. Even if you accumulate a large bill you will be expected to pay it in full immediately. Larger practices often have the luxury of working with you to get an extra day to pay your bill but that is not feasible at this office. This is not unusual for small firms, but you should be aware of it before seeking care here. They are very passionate about what they do at Family Veterinary Hospital of Stone Ridge. Most of my sheltie’s test results were accomplished in house with minimum delay and it appears they have extensive recovery facilities for your pet beyond a simple surgical setup. I was allowed to visit my pet back in the recovery area and was impressed with both the staff and equipment. Thank you for taking the time to read my review – Ken C ..... ......................................................................................................................................................................................... update - had to lower my rating because I never received a follow up phone call to ask how my pet was doing or if any problems from the relatively expensive surgery had appeared. I believe now that Pender would have been a better choice - a much larger staff and facility that has time to follow up with their furry patients. They also have payment options that would have been a lifesaver when hit with a 2k bill the day after bringing our sheltie in!

Asia’s diagnosis: rear limb neuropathy. Neurologist suspected peripheral nerve disease, disk disease, or neoplasia (cancer). Several years ago, my sister’s cat was diagnosed with epilepsy. At that time, she decided to have her cat undergo acupuncture as a treatment for her cat’s epilepsy. To my surprise, I witnessed the positive results acupuncture had on my sister’s cat. Therefore, I figured why not try acupuncture on my 11 year old Akita, Asia? A couple years ago, I noticed that Asia was having difficulty standing up. At the time, Asia was ten years old and I initially thought her potential health issue was simply due to old age. As time went on, Asia began to lose her balance while walking on flat surfaces and I immediately became concerned. I called my veterinarian, additional specialists, and after several discussions about which solution to this problem would best fit Asia’s needs, I decided to ask my vet about acupuncture. Coincidently, I received a flyer in the mail about Dr. Chau’s practice. After talking to Dr. Chau, we started acupuncture therapy on April 23, 2009. My husband was not a believer of acupuncture therapy until he witnessed how acupuncture helped to improve Asia’s health issues. This past year, Asia enjoyed a quality of life that she would not have been able to enjoy if it wasn’t for Dr. Chau and acupuncture. Acupuncture for Asia is like getting a tune up for a car. We actually told Asia it was time for her tune up. Even though she was tired for the day, we could tell that my puppy girl was feeling recharged. Asia played with our cat and there’s a bounce to her step while we were out on our walks. Granted, we had some bad days, but the good days definitely outweighed the bad ones. All thanks to Dr. Chau’s acupuncture therapy treatments. D&D Jones 07 April 2010

I saw Dr. Vanderson for my puppys second dose of vaccines. Less than one month earlier, I saw Dr. Chau for my puppys first dose of vaccines. My first visit included a wellness exam, which is what I expected and it is appropriate. During the first visit, Dr. Chau made a comment about my puppys ears being exceptionally dirty. She also offered great training advice using positive reinforcement. I truly appreciated the time Dr. Chau took to get to know my puppy and provide me with counsel and real tips for behavioral training. I came in for the second vaccine dose less than one month later, and Dr. Vanderson was very informative about vaccines and administered the second dose. She took my puppys temperature and weight and briefly checked her over by touching her body. I was EXTREMELY SURPRISED when I paid for my second dose of vaccine to see a SECOND PUPPY EXAM also on the bill. What constituted the $60 exam? If you are going to charge that much for an exam within 30 days of seeing a healthy dog, the LEAST you could do is check up on the issues from the last visit which Dr. Chau made note of. Check her ears, look at her eyes, look at her teeth. If you are going to charge premium prices, the least you can do is provide a thorough exam. I wouldve informed Dr. Vanderson to be more thorough, however i was under the impression I was simply getting a second dose of vaccines and we were going on our wagging way!

We recently moved to the Aldie area and decided to switch to Family Vet of Stone Ridge because it was more convenient. We were originally fairly happy with them. Then the last time we took our dog there for a simple vaccination and nail trim, they decided to charge us a $57 "wellness examination" fee without informing us that this would need to be done before our dog could receive this vaccination. They refused to refund it and said that it was our fault for not inquiring about the fees prior to visiting their office. Furthermore, the examination that the vet supposedly did before our dog got the vaccination took only 2 minutes and was very short and not thorough at all. Later when I called to question this, she made it seem as though it were our fault for not mentioning our dogs previous problems (we didnt know we were having an annual examination, nor did we want one!!!). They were rude when handling our issue and were fine when we told them that we would not be returning. I would never recommend this vet office to anyone...they have bad business practices and do not know how to properly treat their clients. If we had known that they were going to pull this kind of shady practice on us, we would have saved ourselves the $57 and drove to our old vet. We will NOT be returning to this office and I recommend that you go elsewhere.

When I moved to Stone Ridge several years ago, I took my cat, Fitch, to Dr. Chau based on the many excellent online reviews. I can tell you that the great reviews are well deserved. Fitch has a number of medical issues (for example, did you know that cats can get asthma and need an inhaler?), and it is obvious that Dr. Chau is incredibly well-versed in how to treat them. She always explains what is happening with Fitch in a way thats easy to understand, and lets me ask as many questions in person/on the phone as needed--I never feel rushed. The vet hospital is the cleanest I have ever been to. More importantly, everyone that I have ever interacted with has been incredibly friendly, and I feel like they truly care about me and my pet. Unfortunately, my kitty has needed several overnight stays, but I am extremely confident that hes getting wonderful care. One time Dr. Chau kept him over the weekend in one of the sunny front exam rooms so that he wouldnt spend his time in a cage. Dr. Chau is also understanding about keeping costs under control while still providing the best service. And finally, I have never once had a problem getting an appointment--something I have run in to with vets in the past. I feel so lucky to have Dr. Chau so close, but Id drive miles to see her because the care is so wonderful!
