We have been customers of the Four Paws Animal Hospital for approximately the past four years. Over this period of time, in general, we and our 2 cats have received adequate care. However, during this period 2 incidents have occurred regarding what my wife and I feel are very unfair pricing practices. The first of the two incidents occurred approximately 2 years ago when our cat had an emergency issue and we rushed him to the vet. Once at the vet, we were informed that to diagnose the issue the cat would have to be sedated and an ultra-sound given. We were told that this would lead to the diagnosis. However, while the cat was sedated, we received a call from the vet saying that there was also a need to perform a biopsy at the cost of an additional 300-400 hundred dollars. The second incident occurred last week when we took the cat in to have his teeth cleaned after his 6-month checkup. At the checkup we were again given a quote for the cost of the cleaning, in the range of 500-550 dollars to clean teeth and pull a few bad teeth. Again, when the cat was sedated we were called and told there was an additional $800 in fees due to teeth that needed to be pulled. To be fair, we were told prior that the fee could go over the quote depending on the number of teeth that needed to be removed however; we feel that over doubling the quote is unacceptable and made the quote worthless. To make this worse, I fear at this point this is a common practice at Four Paws after talking to one of the veterinary technicians when I picked up my cat. I was told “If we told people the cost for the dental cleaning could range up to over $1200 nobody would do it. Your cat was a rare case….”. In both of these cases, the purpose of providing the quote is to allow us as a family to budget for the procedure and decide what is best for us and our cat. In both case, we were not given a fair opportunity to do this due to the poor estimates of service we were given. Additionally, in both cases we were given similar reasoning as to the case “this is a rare case”. Additionally, the other common thread that I do not appreciate is the statements “well if you just can’t afford it” are very inappropriate. This is not all about money but also the care of our pets and us being able to make the decisions base on accurate information. During the second incident the veterinarian pulled over 12 teeth leaving our cat essentially toothless. We do not feel this is in the cat’s best interest either.

Clean, friendly, caring & reasonable prices. We moved to the area & were in need of a good vet that would accommodate our rescue dogs needs. She is animal aggressive because she had been attacked. They were awesome and let us come in a side door. They cared about her comfort level as well as that of their other four pawed clientele. I saw Dr. Burchett, and we loved her. She was very knowledgeable and spent time with my girl and gave her a thorough exam and made sure we understood everything. My dog had some blood testing run and Dr. Burchett called me the next day to discuss the results. I missed her call and called back thinking I would just have to speak to the receptionist about it. To my surprise after a short hold the receptionist put me through to Dr. Burchett who took time to explain the results, the medication she was prescribing and how it would affect my girl. She made sure I understood everything and answered my questions. It was so refreshing to find a place that truly cares about their animals and takes their time with them and doesnt make them feel like a number. This vet was about a 20 minute drive from where I live, but totally worth it for the excalibur care our girl received. Great Dr., Great vet tech, great service, great attitudes.

I drove pass this business yesterday and although I have never been here for the care of my pets, I dont know if I would based on the message that was on your business sign outside of your building. I do not recall the exact wording but as a parent of child that has been diagnosed with ADHD, I took great offense to the message on your sign. It read in part, "ADHD in Adults is like a puppy without a leash". What in the world does ADHD have to do with the care of our pets? This message needs to be removed and more thought and sensitivity needs to be considered when you add a message that is viewed by the public!! ADHD is a disorder, that unfortunately has no cure and it is something that people, like my son, must live with and deal with for the rest of their lives! I dont appreciate your business making light of such a serious disorder where shame is such a big part of how society deals with this disorder. Your message doesnt make his or their lives any better! I would appreciate the immediate removal of this sign and in the future please use more care when putting messages that are viewed by the public!

Took my dog there they said she had a lump on her breast. They said well get a biospy and send it out. I guess it was my own stupidity for not asking for the cost since they charged me $700 to get this taken care of just for the test. Then they said that we needed to get an operation on her to remove the lump and that would cost 2-3k because it was malignant. I said ok im going for a second opinion. I went to another vet who said then came to a different conclusion who said it was a benign tumor and that due to her age she should just live out her life peacefully until she starts to fee pain because the surgery is excruciatingly painful. It seems like this place is just after money and didnt care about our pet at all just what would make them the most profit. This place is borderline Banfield and i would avoid it and go somewhere else.

Compassionate and knowledgeable staff! I took my cat, Max to Four Paws yesterday morning as an emergency. His regular clinic wasnt open yet, so I rushed him to the next closest clinic I could find. Max had serious head trauma and had lost a great deal of blood. My family and I were so concerned about Max and the staff at Four Paws was extremely caring and did everything they could to ease our concerns. Although Max wasnt a regular patient, they rushed him in and were able to repair Maxs broken jaw and other mouth wounds very quickly. Max is now doing great and is starting to heal, and its all thanks to Dr. Kallay and the rest of the staff at Four Paws.

Weve taken both our boys, (one dog and one cat), to Four Paws since they were babies three years ago and the staff has always made me and the boys feel like a special part of their family. Everyone who works there, (from Jan to the techs to Dr. B and Dr. K), has a clear love of animals. They work hard to let you know they value you and your pets. Whether youre in need of routine check-ups or emergency services, Four Paws provides the best possible care with the highest level of professionalism. If youre looking for a vet in the Fredericksburg area, consider them highly recommended!
