If you love your family, do not take them here! I took my husbands grandmother (60s) here when her sugar levels were over 600 and not registering on her machine. She was vomiting, passing out, weak, and flushed. She has diabetes, a pace maker, and on and on. The lady checking us is wasted time, over 20 minutes to be exact. The triage nurse didnt care to take us back so we waited an hour. I called patient advocates and got no answer. When we finally went back the nurse was rude, and gram did not have a blood pressure. We were taken back and her sugar was tested again, there machine goes to 700 but could not register her sugar levels. We begged for insulin. We were told to wait. We were told none could be given until the knew her EXACT levels. Gram declined and could not stay awake. She was having a hard time remembering anything. An hour later still no test results and still no insulin. An hour later they gave an insulin drip, I asked what her level was and I was told, "We still dont know but can give this drip for anything over 300." WHY did they wait so long then? I then reported slurred speech to the nurses, who checked it out but declared she was fine. It took them over 20 minutes to cath her because she was so confused. Her heart rate (with pace maker) was a steady 92-93 the whole time we were there. The doctor came and explained we should be able to bring her back around and have her home in a few days. Hours later her heart was racing, monitors were going off and I sat tight. Then she awoke and grabbed her chest. HR was 138. I got a nurse and they IGNORED ME. I tried again and I was told by the head nurse, "That is not really her heart rate, its picking up signals" Minutes later nurses came to take her upstairs and she was looking grey. I asked, "Are you getting enough oxygen?" She said, "No." I asked again with the same answer. I asked the nurse if she was breathing ok, she assured me she was fine. Upstairs we went and I was told I was to be in the waiting room while they got her into an ICU bed and theyd come get me in a few minutes. 15 minutes later a nurse came out to tell me that they had to intubate her as she wasnt getting enough oxygen and may have had a stroke and mini heart attack. I would not be able to see her for a few hours as they were working on her. Days later in the ICU (Christmas Eve) I noticed that her arm was pinned in the bed. I alerted the nurse and they paged a Dr and sent for tests. Another stroke. Days later on the regular floor (for heart patients) the nurses all SUCKED. They were LAZY beyond belief. Could not be bothered to help even when grams bed was BROKEN and she had fallen down in it. How did she fall down? The very RUDE heart doctor got her that way and didnt help put her back correctly. The heart doctor was a female, short, dark hair, accent. You do NOT want this dr near your family. She would say, "Take your time" and then forcefully move you because she couldnt wait. I saw her interact with my husbands gram 4-5 times and it was NEVER pretty. And before Sentara people message me like they did for the other reviewer... check your records. I filed a complaint. And spoke to the advocates MANY times. But do you think there was ever a follow up? No. My husbands grandmother is fighting still in another hospital. She most likely will not make it much longer. I would not even have to be saying that if it werent for the HUGE delay in care and the ignorant nurses would did not listen when I spoke. They thought they knew it all and in reality they have killed her. She cannot speak, walk, and it filled with fluids. All because of Sentara.

This hospital has terrible staff. They dont prioritize obviously distressed people in horrific pain that had to come in via an ambulance over anyone else that was already there. They let my mom sob in a wheelchair for 2 hours before getting her a room even though sitting up hurt her more than laying down. She was given steroids after they concluded it was sciatica, they never even brought her pain meds even though she was crying the ENTIRE TIME we were at this hospital. They were even told last time she had sciatica that those exact same steroids did not help at all and she had to get a cortizone shot which they dont do at hospitals so she would have to see a specialist and be in a lot of pain until then, yet they still refused to write her a pain script to ease her GREAT suffering. She said it hurts worse than child birth. They forgot us for an hour in that room, I pressed the pain button for her pain meds and 10 mins passed and they never brought them so I went to the front desk and the nurse said we were up for discharge an hour ago and was surprised no one came by, 20 minutes pass again and still no one has brought her any pain meds so I go to the desk again and the same exact nurse starts arguing with me that we already received our pain meds when we had NOT, 20 more minutes pass and I go up a 3rd time and shes immediately snappish with me and tells me to talk to the other nurse that tells me our meds were ordered an hour ago and never pulled and that she would pull them now, which took another 10 minutes and FINALLY the doctor comes back to our room to be as unhelpful as possible by refusing to give my mother a pain script and NONE of them even went over ANY care options for sciatica like hot/cold therapy or some exercises to help relieve pain. I had to look all of that up online. If anything this hospital caused my mom even more pain than she was already in by ignoring her and leaving her to sit up for 3 hours when sitting up hurts her more. The pain meds they finally did give her are nothing more than advil(tramadol) and didnt help her at all, so she sobbed the entire ride home. She would have been in great pain anyways since they forgot her meds for so long they didnt even have a chance to kick in before we left. My mom does not deserve to be treated like this! This hospital should just tear down all its posters that say they care about easing your pain because THEY DONT CARE AT ALL, and they dont prioritize triage, they only go in order of sign ins. I would not even send my worst enemy to this hospital.

I have been to this ER twice in the 3 years living in VA. My first visit, in 2013, I had indescribable stomach pains to the point of not being able to move. The wait time in the ER was lack luster, I want to say it was almost an hour before making it into a room to get my vitals checked. After getting in the room, I was laid in a bed, and I waited for an ultra sound of my stomach. While waiting, the pain got worse and the nurse decided to give me morphine. (Good on her for trying to ease my pain) Turns out I was allergic to morphine... When I told the nurse that the pain was worse with the morphine, my skin was on fire, ect...she didn’t believe me saying shes never heard of someone allergic to morphine and left me in pain until I got my ultrasound. Anywho, I finally got my ultra sound completed, they gave me a GI Jane cocktail which mildly helped (she told me it was a chalky version of pepto bismal) then they sent me on my way with no diagnosis. The ER visit took 6 hours total. After visiting my regular doctor for a follow up and had a gastroscopy, turns out I had stomach ulcers from the heavy duty narcotics after a wisdom tooth surgery and they were just finishing up healing by themselves after 14 days. I was very disappointed that I was in such pain for 14 days with no help from doctors. The second time I went to the ER, in 2015, I went in after hurting my back during yard maintenance. They checked me in right away, and did my vitals within 5 minutes. I was then sent to the Military section of the ER where I had to wait for another 45 minutes before getting into a room. After getting in the room the doctor came in, asked me to describe my symptoms, she quickly felt my spine and said I sprained a back muscle. She gave me a prescription for narcotic pain killers and 2 days off work. I wish she would have investigated my injury further but I am fairly happy with this ER visit in general. I had a follow up with my regular doctor and he concurred with her diagnosis and sent me to physical therapy with more pain meds.
