I am beyond upset and disgusted at the way this place operates. My boyfriend scheduled an appointment here due to my 8 month old chocolate lab Sofie having diarrhea for a couple days and displaying some abnormal behavior. Concerned that she may have picked up a bug at the park, we brought her in for an appointment today. The doctor checked her temperature and said she had a very high fever 103 degrees and wanted to test for acid and Leptosporosis.... We are new parents and are eager to figure out whats the problem so we agreed to both... A fecal sample was provided for examination as well. The doctor came back and said "good news! all her tests are negative [the fecal sample takes an additional day at the lab]" while presenting a $600 invoice with nearly 10 items listed that we did not consent to (no exaggeration).. He proceeded to say he gave her 2 shots in which I replied "Im sorry, you did what?" And he then retracted his statement and said "well I gave her a shot of fluids in her back, its pretty much water and I suggest we give her a shot for ____"......! Let me reiterate that he first said he GAVE HER 2 SHOTS (he put it on the initial bill!) and then saw my reaction and said he didnt give it to her..... We DID NOT CONSENT TO HIM GIVING HER ANY SHOTS. Even if it was just water, which sodium chloride is not... You do not do anything to a pet without the owners permission!! PLUS injecting fluids into a puppy is only required when a dog is unresponsive and in emergency situations, this was not at all that! I suspected something weird when he brought Sofie to the back room for the tests and I didnt want to seem too overbearing and not let her go alone but I wish I followed my instinct. This doctor took advantage of the fact that I was vulnerable and worried about my puppy and thought he could get away with doing lord knows what and I was going to pay for it.. Well I will not let this go. Since I did agree to the Lepto and blood tests, I paid the bill of nearly 300 dollars (65 bucks for the exam, 115 for the acid test, 95 for the unnecessary Lepto test that he persuaded us to get, 45 for the fecal sample, 25 dollars for an antibiotic (anti biotic for what? Everything came back negative, the fecal sample results arent in so why is he prescribing medicine with no diagnosis?) and we leave the office... We get to the car, I take off Sofies harness and notice a VICIOUSLY HUGE bump on her back and immediately begin sobbing because I dont know what they gave to my baby. We turn back for an explanation, the doctor disappeared, the staff locked the doors and are refusing to speak with us. I am so confused and upset Im considering calling the police. FIRST MISTAKE I made, do NOT EVER LET YOUR PET OUT OF YOUR SITE WITH THESE VETS. And if the vet refuses to allow you to be with your pet I suggest going else where..this doctor can not be trusted! its not about the money, but the fact that he gave my baby shots without consenting with us. There is NO excuse for this. And all we get from the doctor is an insincere "sorry". The guy couldnt care less about your pet...

I am reposting a review I wrote several years ago when Dr. Mann was practicing in Brooklyn. Ive since left New York, and have had several other excellent vets, but Dr. Mann is still the best Ive ever met. I should add that after I wrote the review that follows, my opinion of Dr. Mann only improved. On two separate occasions he saved my dogs life-- once by locating a tumor within my dogs spleen and performing an emergency splenectomy, and again when my dog presented with bloat late on a Sunday night. He met us at the clinic after hours and performed a surgery without which my dog would have died in a matter of hours. These are the lengths to which Dr. Mann will go to help his patients. I see where other reviewers have questioned his motives or prices and would remind everyone reading this that medical care is expensive. Similar surgeries on humans would cost in the tens of thousands of dollars. Life-saving surgery for under 2k is a screaming bargain. Dr. Mann does what he does for love, not money. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here is my initial review from 2012: "Dr. Mann is by all measures the best veterinarian Ive ever encountered. The first time he examined my dog, I was blown away. I just didnt know there were medical professionals like him that worked with animals. Seriously, if he was your cardiologist youd feel great about it. Ive been taking my Weimaraner to Brooklyn Cares for four and a half years and I have always been happy with the attention and care my dog has received. Most of the time we see Dr. Mann because I make a point to ask for him when I schedule an appointment. Have you ever been to a vet and you feel like they want to sell you all this stuff and a bunch of expensive services? And youre thinking, ehhh, I want to do everything for my animal, but this feels like maybe its not necessary? Ever get that vibe? Yeah. The doctors and staff at Brooklyn Cares dont do that. They have supplements and the like for sale if you want them, but its not like when you go to the hair salon and youre made to feel guilty for not buying $30 shampoo. They understand that people, even people who would do anything for their pets, are on a budget and also probably not millionaires. They just want to take care of your animal so it can be happy and healthy. If you live in the neighborhood, or even if you dont (and I dont-- I make the trip from Greenpoint all the way down there because its worth it), you should take your pet to Dr. Timothy Mann."

This place over charges you! I came in this Saturday since my normal vet was closed. I had taken my dog to his normal vet the day before for his allergies and to get up to date on his vaccination. I came here because my dogs eye turned red and I wanted to check it out. The doctor saw the eye and did the expected eye stain test. He then asked if he ever got his eye pressure tested. I said yes in years past. He proceeded to unnecessarily test his eye for pressure without giving me a chance to say no or yes. ($61 extra) then says he needs full blood work ($225 extra). He is not his primary care doctor, nor do I have his blood work at my disposal. There was no need to test for his blood. He then charges me a fecal test ($50 extra) with giardia Elisa? No idea but it was an extra line added to my bill ($30 extra ). He then says he needs a bunch of drops and drugs. Some he did need but some were unnecessary. I had no choice to buy it since he opens the bottle and plastic wrap before he explains what it is! ($32 extra). I then examined the bill further and found a charge for omega benefits ($45 extra) that nobody even told me- and they never even gave me. Over a 600+ bill for a red eye! They wanted to charge me an extra 300 for an allergy test but luckily I had time to say no!! When you go to the room with the vet there are 2 other "workers" there- they all talk at once so you dont even get a minute to talk or stop all the tests they do! My dog is 8 and scratches his eye often but never has the bill been this high. I felt swindled after I left and read the existing reviews now. I guess Im Not the only one that has complained about this! That being said- the staff was nice and it was a clean place. Last time I visit but at least I can let the other dog owners in the area know not to go here!
