IF I COULD HAVE GIVEN -0 STARS I WOULD!! Hello, I was not the patient who was admitted. I was close family to a patient who was admitted. When my relative was admitted and taken to one of the first rooms in the ER the providers ran multiple test on him to see what was the cause of everything that was happening to him. We had asked for my relative to be transferred to the VA, but the MD Warner refused to do so. One of the nurses (male) was very rough with my relative while trying to take his glucose blood reading. This was just the beginning. The supervisor nurse Tyrell did not have any answers for us and stated "I dont know" which every other nurse stated the same thing to any question we had. When the neurologist came she seemed a bit angry for the ambulance to have given my relative two Ativan and two sedative medications. My relative was moved to ICU due to not being responsive what’s-so-ever. We were all there since Monday 09/26/16 as a family should be. Due to us only getting sleep in the waiting room we did move some chairs around to get a good night’s rest. Thanks to some nurses with common decency we were given pillows and blankets. Well on Tuesday morning 09/27/16 the cleaning lady (name unknown) walked in, turned on the lights, and walked out while some of us were still asleep. My cousin went out there and asked in a nice tone if next time she can just make sure its okay to turn on the lights since some of us were asleep and the cleaning lady said "okay." She then went to the security guard (Tall Caucasian man) who came into the ICU waiting room and started being rude to us. He stated to us that "This is not a hotel!" We advised "We know this is not a hotel and this sure isnt a vacation for us. Any other hospital you go to would not mind if people were asleep in the waiting room since thats what they are usually. We have been here since Monday morning with a relative that has been unresponsive in the ICU." He then stated that there are executives walking around and we need to clean it up. My mother asked what mess exactly since there was no mess and it was just the chairs that were slightly moved around. He looked around and stated well you all need to wake up and fix it up. We then asked for his Supervisor. He came back with the Supervisor nurse Tyrell who was shocked at the response that the security guard had to say to us. He confirmed that we did not have to move the chairs back and we could continue sleeping since thats what the waiting rooms are used for. He stated the cleaning lady did need to clean and we stated we never advised her otherwise. She just never came in to clean all she did was flip the light switch on and leave the waiting room. He agreed that he would have a talk with the security guards supervisor which probably never happened, but as me and two of my cousins were walking back into my relatives room the security guard was there and gave us a dirty look. Me and my family have never felt so uncomfortable and disrespected at a hospital, EVER! It is ridiculous. Tuesday 09/27/16 my relative finally awoke. Mind you he hasnt eaten since Sunday 09/25/16. It was mid-day and he wasn’t able to eat because they were going to try to complete the Spinal tap since the first two tries by two different doctors were unsuccessful. Well once he was done with the spinal tap it was probably about 3PM and he was very hungry. I asked the nurse RN Tilly and she just stated she will ask his doctor and never advised me of anything after. So he is still hungry and my cousin asked Tilly about him eating and her response was, “I know I heard five times already!”

IF I COULD GIVE -0 STARS I WOULD. JUANA ROCHA Continuing my review: Once more another rude answer/comment given by one of your staff member’s. If you were asked five times then why wasn’t anything done about it. Why should we have to ask about everything? Shouldn’t nurses have a plan set out and be the ones advising us on what’s going to happen next? Shouldn’t the nurses be worried about their patients eating? After the “fifth” time being asked she finally gave me a menu and advised me on what he can eat since he was on a diabetic meal plan. I put in my order with her and his meal arrived within 15 minutes. While all of the nurses (except Tilly) were sitting together chit chatting about their lives I saw the cafeteria worker walk past them with my relative’s food and she placed it on the nurses station. The nurses stayed chit chatting and about 10 minutes went by. My cousin went to the nurses to ask them if that is our relative’s food. When she asked them they all looked at her as if she was interrupting their gossiping. One of those three nurses that were gossiping looked at the tray and then handed it off to my cousin. None of the nurses bothered to assist us in getting him situated to eat. My cousin had to lift my relative up by himself and while we were struggling to get the tray in place again no nurses assisted until we asked them to help. Once more Tilly said “We usually don’t have our ICU patients eat in here.” Once more that is no excuse to not do your job. It is probably the simplest task you have to do as an RN. When the results came back from the Spinal Tap and they stated since the doctor was too aggressive there was blood in the sample and it was inconclusive. Later on they tell a different family member that it was negative. The nurses seem to be contradicting each other and neither of them know what they are talking about. I am not sure if the patients sheets, tape on IV’s, etc need to be changed daily, but I’ll advise you all, that he still had the same sheets since Monday 09/26/16 that had blood on them. Some of the tape on the IV’s were full of blood as well. They have not been changed. I left him last night around 11PM and because his sugar levels were too high the nurse did not want to feed him anything, absolutely nothing. He kept asking me to eat. I understand there are protocols, but I am also sure even with having high sugar levels there is something the patients can be fed. Since I am not able to be with him 24/7 I honestly worry about his well-being in the care of Abrazo staff. If I am not there to remind them that he is hungry, uncomfortable, or anything else. Oh my how will they remember? I will take my complaint EVERYWHERE until something gets done. Have you seen all the bad reviews on google? The staff needs work to be done. In a hospital setting the staff should be caring, loving, friendly, helpful, compassionate, and understanding. The majority of the staff were absolutely the opposite. I will be sending this complaint to anyone I can get in touch with that works with Abrazo Maryvale hospital. - Juana R 09/28/16.

Early in the morning, Dad was feeling very lightheaded and had pain in his stomach. I gave him some soda crackers and he threw them up. I called his Doctor and he said get him into the Emergency Room. I took him to the closest hospital which was Maryvale Emergency. After waiting with him there in the waiting room for quite some time, he could barely walk, and I helped him back, where they questioned him and I. They took his vitals and said they needed to admit him for further testing. He laid in a bed with curtains as walls for hours, and then went in for testing. The Doctor asked him and I what I thought was an odd question... "If your heart stops, or if you stop breathing, do you want us to try to resuscitate you?" Dad said, "No, if that happens I want to go on home to be with Jesus." They then had him sign a "Do Not Resuscitate" form and they admitted him. They placed an oxygen tube on his face which had a small piece that went into his nose on each side. I stayed with him all day until 7 PM that evening. He had nothing to eat the entire day. I gave him water. I went home, ate dinner, showered and went to bed. At 12:14 AM I was wakened by a telephone call from the hospital. The female voice on the other end said... "This is the Maryvale Hospital. Your Dad has "coded" and we need you to come to the hospital." I replied, "Coded? What does that mean?" She said "Your Dad has died, and you need to come here and tell us what to do with his body." I was in SHOCK! When I arrived, two ladys were there to "console" me I suppose. They said, "We are sorry about your Father, but then you knew this was going to happen." I was in disbelief! I knew what? The one lady said, "Well... his enzymes showed he had a heart attack and from the testing a blockage in his heart and death was inevitable." I said... "I had NO idea!" Basically folks, my Fathers death was due to the hospital NOT placing a stint into his heart to open a clogged artery. The bill they sent me to pay for their attempt to resuscitate was $38,000. Later, I told this story to a nurse at another hospital, and she said, "Oh yeah, Maryvale... thats why they call it SCARYVALE." So, my advice to all is... Go there if you want to die!
