Full disclosure: I just completed a 1-star review for St. Josephs Hospital, the unworthy predecessor to Barrow. If youre lucky enough to bypass the emergency department downstairs and go straight to Barrow, count your blessings. From the time I was taken to my room in the Barrow tower to the time I was discharged, I received the level of care that most institutes can only dream of providing. Every single nurse, tech, physical and occupational therapist, and of course, neurologist that worked with me truly went above and beyond to make sure I was taken care of. They thought of everything to make sure that I was going to be prepared to re-enter life as close to normal as possible. Not only that, but after several failed lumbar puncture attempts in the emergency department (see associated review for St. Josephs), the team in interventional radiology made an otherwise grueling process seem easy and did so without even causing me the slightest bit of pain. I wanted to get up from the table and give the doctor a big hug after that, but I was told to stay flat for a while. After that was all said and done, the doctors put their heads together and figured out what the problem was - an undertaking that two other hospitals failed to figure out (and took twice as long as Barrow). I now can resume life as normal (or modified slightly until I fully recover at least) because of their expertise and I am eternally grateful for that. The doctor even spent 15 minutes on the phone with me answering all of my questions and thoroughly explaining the diagnosis since she couldnt be there in person. If only every hospital and inpatient medical facility could be this attentive, caring, professional, and knowledgeable, the world would be a better place.

I had a previous cervical fusion from another spine institute, which ultimately failed. I sought Barrows out, and specifically Dr. Theodore, for his extensive knowledge, and education regarding the spine. I was always seen in a timely manner, and Dr. Theodore and his staff have always answered all my questions. Frankly, I cannot tell you how comforting it is to have this top notch establishment on my side. Ive had spine problems for over three years, and Dr. Theodore is still on board to help me resolve my issues. I think the best part of my life is soon to come, thanks to Barrows and Dr. Theodore. Dr. Theodore was also an inspiration to my son. He took the time to talk with him, and this man has a tremendous work load, there is a reason for that fact. He is the best! I cannot imagine the pressure of doing the job he does. Saves and improves the quality of lives. Saint Josephs Hospital was excellent on my last surgery, and I cannot say enough about the staff during my stay. I will always recommend anyone with spine problems to Barrows, and Dr. Theodore. I will be undergoing another spine surgery with Dr. Theodore in the near future, for a thoracic issue recently discovered. I feel there is no better man or location in the state for this to happen. If you choose Dr. Theodore and Barrows in general, you will be in the best of hands. Thank you Barrows, Dr. Theodore, Daytrel, Julie, and Amanda. You all are very kind and helpful.

This amazing facility went above and beyond all expectations. Nurses in ICU are professional, caring, and attentitive. They watched and monitored through a window outside the room and entered only when needed. They noticed every restless movement and quickly checked to see if assistance or meds would help. After brain tumor removed, pain and nausea were treated quickly (and often.) Room was spotless, private and quiet. With my permission, family was allowed to visit at all hours. Nurses kept them informed and showed patience and understanding with their many questions and concerns. Room cleaning and routine BP and temperature checks were completed when I was awake so as not to disturb my sleep. Dr. Peter Nakaji and his team were amazing. I traveled from San Antonio to Phoenix based on the compassioinate and informative phone interview with Dr. Nakaji. I had seen two neurosurgeons in San Antonio and felt rushed and left with many questions. It was worth the trip as Dr. Nakaji took the time to explain what was needed, how it woud be done, and work with MY schedule to secure a convenient time and date. Without hesitation, I highly recomment Barrow Neurological at St. Josephs Hospital AND Dr. Peter Nakaji for you or your loved one. They changed my life for the better.

I Highly recommend !!!...Totally love Dr Randall Porter!! First met him when he saved my fathers life. He was 80 years old with a broken neck! I went to him a few years later when I needed back surgery. Great results! Dr Porter then did my husbands back surgery in 2010. Excellent outcome. in May of 2015 my husband needed neck surgery ASAP, once again Dr Porter did his surgery. Everything went beautifully! Next week on May 10th 16. Dr Porter will again do another back surgery on my husband, this one will be more extensive than the last one. He will have a fusion as well. we know the outcome will be great! We both trust Dr Porter with our very lives!...Hes that awesome!! We are very Blessed to know him, and have him as our surgeon. Another truly amazing person with his staff is, Heather!!! She is the person who fits you with your braces there. She is kind, and goes out of her way to make sure everything, goes smoothly for your journey. Thanks Dr Porter!...and Thank you Heather! God Bless you both Always! Pamela Jones

Seems to have competent and genuinely concerned medical staff. Surgeon and Interventional Radiologist have both been very attentive and patient answering all questions and explaining the procedures my wife will be undergoing. Working with clerical/support staff on insurance, however has been a nightmare. Since our initial referral weve provided insurance information over the phone twice and once there on 1/5, provided the card for them to copy for the record. We were seen on on the 5th for consultation. Paid our normal in network copay, meaning our insurance has approved care. Since then weve been contacted twice, once to tell us insurance had not authorized treatment, and on 1/25, to ask why we came to Barrow with no insurance. My wife was told the information would be provided to Susan, who would call back. Two days later, still no call from Susan, whom ever that is. BTW her surgerys are set for 2/9-10. WTF this only adds to the normal distress of having a life or death medical problem to begin with!

Barrow is a top class facility and I received excellent treatment for a a sub dural hematoma. However their attending neurotically surgeon, a Doctor named Jay Turner is a world class arrogant SOB. After being released he would do nothing to help schedule my follow up catscan. Because, he did not accept my insurance, Humana, which is not like no one has ever heard of it. I had two issues for which I called for advise, hiccups and numbness in right arm. No return call, following Monday called back and was told that mr turner is "a neurological surgeon" and is very busy and unable to talk to mortal humans, paraphrased! I would certainly recommend Barrow and St Joe, but if Turner comes into your room, throw a bed pan at him, and tell him to get the hell away from you! The only way I was released to go back on warfarin for my mechanic heart valve was working with my wonderful cardiologist Dr Tim Byrne and my PCP Dr Todd Kravetz. The " Neurological Surgern" could give a cat crap!
