This individual worked for Gatehouse Academy a known fraudulent and partly abusive NATSAP affiliated therapeutic boarding school that closed its last campus as of 2012. Dr Carlton worked for them until the states forced closure of the ranch through Transitional Living Corporation in 2010 and continued to work for the main campus until its closing in 2012. The GHA ranch operated for years without a basic license required by state law to provide any type of treatment involving the detoxification of clients or the dispensing of narcotics prescribed by this Dr. This Dr oversaw or was supposed to over see the detoxification portion of the residential treatment. This individual failed to properly oversee, regulate and attend to clients experiencing mild, moderate and severe delirium tremens which can be fatal. Upon a 2010 inspection the state of AZ stated that the facility was unlicensed to provide detoxification services. They observed potential dangerous situations including multiple clients that should have been in a licensed detox center and acted by shutting the facility down. This is very serious. Furthermore when looking at his past prescribing practices their are multiple reports on Vitals regarding overprescribing and negligent staff at one of Dr Carltons offices. One of these negligent staff members was using heavily. Not this Doctors fault but it makes you wonder his affiliation with this individual. His medical board record is available online. Now we are seeing that at one of Dr Carltons current jobs they have just come under scrutiny ending up in a Vice investigative report due to illegal kickbacks that partly resulted in the death of a client. I would ask this doctor his affiliation with David Gates from National Therapeutic Services and Kent Sherman from Gatehouse Academy. The troubled teen industry is violating teens rights and is blatantly unsuccessful except for those profiting from providing unlicensed and unregulated abusive treatment that prays on suffering families. I would stay far far away from any doctor associated with GHA which has now closed all six campuses after the CEO was convicted of laundering money through the company. The entire thing reads like a trashy tabloid and unfortunately is not uncommon at NATSAP affiliated therapeutic boarding schools. The Federal House Committee on Education and Labor also documented this same troubling trend during the televised congressional hearings regarding abusive NATSAP affiliated programs in 2008. This information can be referenced and varafied using the advocacy web sight Heal-onlinedotorg. You can also call the AZ Attorney Generals Office regarding his past job at Gatehouse Academy. • • •

Im not quite sure why there are so many negative reviews of Dr. Carlton. Perhaps because some do not understand the special problems of addiction medicine doctors. Only a limited number of doctors are authorized to prescribe Suboxone and Subutex, so its no surprise that sometimes the waits are long or other problems crop up. I can only relate my own experience. I was a patient of Dr. Carlton for two years, first at his Ray Rd. office and then in Mesa. I saw him once a month at first and once I was stabilized, once every two months. Time in the waiting room was typically anywhere from ten to thirty minutes, normal for any doctor. There were a couple occasions when the wait was longer, but the reason was Dr. Carlton and his associates do not make a habit of rushing patients out, but take the time to listen and explain. There were a few comments here calling the staff "rude." Again, I can only relate my experience, and I found the staff warm, helpful and never rude. When I was seen by Dr. Carlton, he always took the time to listen, answer my questions and explain anything I did not understand. I never felt rushed. He strikes me as a hard-working, compassionate doctor, under great pressure because of the type of medicine (addiction) he practices. Another reviewer called him "cocky," but my impression was he is an extremely bright guy, and sometimes he may appear to some as cocky, as very bright people sometimes do. He also takes all types of insurance, and I never had to pay a penny. This in itself says a lot, as a large percentage of addictions doctors will not even see you without paying hundreds of dollars upfront, insurance or not. If you are an addict, I would urge you to see Dr. Carlton. Suboxone and Subutex are truly miracle drugs. They do not get you high (unless you abuse them by shooting or snorting) allowing you to live a normal life without the horrors of withdrawal. And unlike other narcotics, you do not develop a tolerance, and can stay on the same dose for an indefinite time, or better, slowly taper down and eventually stop. altogether. It has been a life saver for me, and every addict I have spoken to who gets on these drugs says the same thing. If you are having a problem with addiction and are in the Phoenix/Mesa area, I recommend you see Dr. Carlton and get your life back.

Ok this is not just your ordinary family doctor, you need to find another doctor if you want just a normal doctor. Dr. Carlton and his affiliates specialize in addiction, med and phsyc wise. The wait is long but it is only because people are comming to him because they have a cough or what ever. He takes care of mainley Heroin addicts by perscribing the reletivley new drug suboxone. This is why so many people come to him because usually to get a sub sript you have to pay upfront cash fee of 200 dollars but here he will treat it like any other medicine. and you can talk to carlton just make an appointment. but you can see that with all the addicts going here becaus of that no fee thing and then all the people that think hes just an ordinary doctor is what is making the waits so long the sessions so short and the staff a little moody. over all i would say the fault of this place is all the people coming to him for a rash a cough a bruise a sore throat, what ever. so in conclusion go there for addiction help, its great, dont go for a regular doctors appointment. any docter will give you vicks or percs.

Dr. Carlton has been my addiction doctor & PCP for over 15 years and I consider him to be a warm & down to earth doctor that really cares for his patients. He doesnt wear a stern starched white lab coat seen worn by many doctors, instead it is a laid back Hawaiian shirt and sandals. This represents the type of doctor that he is and treats everyone equally regardless of medical issue. I am sad to see him go and it will be REALLY hard to replace him as a doctor, but understand his decision after seeing the clientele that visits his office on a daily basis. I will miss the GREAT people in the office, as they all know my name and we have shared many stories on a personal level. Miss all of you - Dr. C., Trish, Gretchen, Melissa & all the others. YOU WILL ALL BE TRULY MISSED, & GOOD LUCK IN THE FUTURE...

I started going there because my physician moved there. I went for back pain and went from being prescribed 30 pain killers a month to a point over 100 a month. The staff is EXTREMELY rude, they have no sympathy for anything. It is all about the money. Get em in get em out. Every time I needed to get an answer from a Dr. over the phone I would have to call them 4-5 times through the day until I finally get an answer. Dr. Carlton is an addiction specialist and that is his focus. A friend was prescribed methadone for pain when they had heart problems... Methadone… For back pain… The fee’s are ridiculous, I had to fight a 100 dollar charge because I was in California and my friend was in critical condition, that was not a good enough reason to miss an appointment. DO NOT GO HERE !!
