ONE STAR FOR THE ER! Let me first say that I received knee surgery at this hospital 5 years ago and have nothing but praise for the treatment and medical staff there that helped me during that time. I was very well taken care of and told everyone I know about how good it was. HOWEVER I had to take my friend twice in the last week to the emergency room there and, lets just say, it DEFINITELY needs some improvement. The 21 minute estimate wait time you see on their website must mean 21 minutes until your processed through the front desk. We went Friday 24th and waited for approximately 45 minutes before he was taken in in extreme pain which turned out with the mri to be a herniated disc...another 45 minutes before the doctor came and an additonal 30 minutes before I begged them to please get someone to give him some pain meds. They sent him home with some meds but After a week the pain was so bad I took him again . We were there again 2 hours before he was even seen by a doctor. It appeared the 2 ER nurses apparently had to maintain 1/2 of a wing each and of course, it being ER, there was much to be done. We finally had the doctor visit and poke around a bit and prescibe a morphine shot. He seemed to have no access to records of what had gone on the week before. I find that strange as my clinic always can pull it right up. We then waited for a nurse to come in with the shot. My husband is a former Navy Seal and Vietnam POW so hes not a pansy about pain, but he was practically in tears and could not sit, stand or lie down for any relief. It had been 2 1/2 hours then. We still waited. After 45 minutes, I saw the doctor in the hall again and begged for someone to help him or we would have to leave. He asked me where the nurse was and I told him she was apparently still busy. He sent another nurse in who we thanked and Steve finally got relief after ALMOST 3 1/2 HOURS. We thanked her, Her response was to question us about the previous meds and ask me about what good it wouldve done had we left. I told her we had some painkillers left at home, and although they werent working well, it was better than him sitting there for such a long time getting no relief or help and in excruciating pain.. Steve had been in pain all night and had taking the meds as prescribed. She said he should have taken more [ although that morning he had already taken the other pain killers]. Hopefully nurses dont always prescribe more without checking with a doctor. He does have a heart condition. She also repeated to us twice that " We go as fast as we can here, but its never fast enough, is it?"... like we were imposing on asking for help after almost 3 hours. When we got to the car, I noticed that despite my telling the doctor he had been treated the week before in ER at the same hospital and was diagnosed as having a Herniated disc 4-05 and there were records, he just put down ":sciatica" for diagnosis. Obviously they may not always bother to check records. I cant prescribe either but if I could I would say they need more nurses in the ER section . Rachelle was going as fast a she could. The blond nurse who finally came in to "help" needs a vacation as she sounds pretty burnt out. I am thinking of changing insurance as I dont want to be left in such a vulnerable state if we have to go again.

I was induced due to preclampsia. I was truly suffering. On top of extremely high blood pressure, dizziness, extreme swelling, I was sick with a gnarly case of bronchitis. Three days before I was induced I was hospitalized for my bronchitis alone, I used the same facility; out of both visits Dorothea is the shining star of the many nurses and even doctors on site. I cant express this enough. I was induced and had to wait, hooked up to machines and multiple tubes filled with antibiotics and blood pressure medication. The nurse I started out with made me feel sort of like a burden. She was nice, but it felt fake and the days leading up to this night felt like torture. I was an uncomfortable emotional wreck and couldnt breathe and on top of that was coughing and my blood pressure kept skyrocketing. I felt like I had to beg her to help me...fast forward to the next shift change, right before I delivered. As soon as Dorothea was assigned to me, she was beyond helpful, she instantly made it her priority to make me comfortable and help me feel confident to push through my ailments. She made me feel like she hadnt done this with many others before, like I was important to her and like my labor truly mattered to her. My labor progressed extremely fast after breaking my water. I went from 2 cm, to fully dialated, to pushing to giving birth to my incredible son, in less than an hour. She was there lifting me up, helping my fiance coach me, making me feel physically and mentally confident. I honestly dont think I could have done it without her! I truly felt she was an angel sent from the heavens. I was loopy, sleep deprived from over a week of coughing and then not sleeping one bit for a full 30 hours. Everything was such a blur but I remember telling my fiance with confidence that I thought she was an angel of course, he laughed at me. Dorothea stood out, she is truly magnificent, words can NOT express enough how thankful I am that she was there to work with me for the full 12 hours that she was on her shift. If I didnt work with her, I wouldnt have been able to get over the first nurse and my experience with scripps encinitas would have been mediocre at best. Thank you Dorothea, for the rest of my life, I will never forget you. You were a significant part of the most important day of my life. My son is my reason for my entire existence and I dont think of the day he was born without also thinking of you. Even with the drugs out of my system, 6 weeks later I still believe you are an angel on Earth, God knew what he was doing when he made you. Thank you for hiring her Scripps Encinitas!

When I went to the emergency room in Encinitas. I experience horrible service, The first physician that I encounter was a little unsure what to do with me. He reviewed my records and it was confirm that I had an infection. So physician explain I should be admitted and administered IV antibiotics I then met with a hospitalist who was the nicest person that I had encountered during my visit. The hospitalist went over my medical condition. He explain to me what would be going on during my stay at the hospital. Everything was fine for me. I was informed that in the morning a new physician would meet with me. In the morning the new physician was rude. I explained that I was in pain. She then explained that I would not wake up. I explained that is was because of the medication I was on and that it was a sedative. She told me that she discontinued my medications including the iv antibiotics. Then told me she was discharging me. she also brought up prescription medication for nothing. plus it had nothing to do with my infection that I had. I also heard her mention that she was discharging not only me but three other patients who were in the observation unit. Maybe this had to do with a certain amount of patient she has to discharge during the month. When I contacted the charge nurse in the emergency room. she informed that the hospitalist physician that I encountered were not Scripps doctors. they were a third-party company that was staff at the hospital. I just want to scripps to be aware of the doctors that these 3rd party companies are staffing at their facilities. This doctor is a direct refection of the Scripps physicians and the hospital system. However i must say that the physicians that are hired with scripps are the opposite of this female physician i encountered.
