This review is extremely overdue but it is important to me that I write it. Dr. Shannon Veltri and the veterinary team saved my French Bulldog, Millie, during the heat wave a couple weeks ago. My boyfriend and I were driving up North for Labor Day weekend with our dog & cat and got caught in parking lot traffic on Highway 80, as it usually becomes during holiday weekends. Since we were hardly moving and my car was apparently low on refrigerant, the AC was definitely not working. My car was registering 117 degrees and no one was ok. As I drastically made moves to get off at the next exit, accept defeat and head back home on the side of the freeway without traffic, my frenchies pant turned into a scared choke. My boyfriend quickly jumped into the back of the car and began pouring cool water over her and my cat but it was not looking good. He was able to google the nearest emergency vet and that is how we found Barney & Russum Animal Clinic. We called and gave them 5 minute notice that we were coming in with 2 severely overheating animals. They immediately brought them in to cool down and began working to, Im not kidding, save their lives. My pupper registered a 108 temperature and a severely enflamed esophagus from panting so hard but she is alive today because of these doctors skills and urgency. What really set them over the top was their concern for mine and my boyfriends well being too. As I sat there crying and scared at the situation their admin staff brought us water and offered us time to go grab a quick bite and relax because we would be there for a couple hours. Dr. Veltri remained open after hours to make sure she was able to reach the evening clinic so we could wait in their AC while the temp outside went down. It was truly quality service and Im so very greatful.

My wife and I have been bringing our extend animal family to Barney and Russum for a few years now. We have always been well taken care of and the ladies up front along with the vet techs have been great. I have never once yet experienced a bad visit. We truly like all the staff , but our favorite doctor is Dr. Harmeling and Melissa the vet tech. I have seen other doctors to at this clinic and they were also awesome. I would highly recommend this Vet clinic to anyone. I saw one review here about prices....The only thing I would suggest is you talk with your vet, discuss your options and most of all inquire about the cost before proceeding. Medical cost for all species has sky rocketed, but we have to try and find a way to deal with it. Some vets may arrange payment plans for you, if this is an option please hold up your end of the option so in the furfure this option will still be available. Remember if you burn your bridges we others may never get a chance to cross that bridge.....anyway enough on that. Please do your home work on your vet, but most of all please love and take are of your animals. I want to tanks Dr. Harmeling once again and his staff for a job well done on ralphs ear and tummy surgery that he perform on Monday 1/20/14. I can say Linda and I were sort of shocked at the price too for Ralphs surgery and thats because we thought it was going to be much more. Dr. Harmeling performed 3 procedures (ear/eye/tummy) on Ralph and I can say what they charged me was what it cost us a few years ago at Silverado Vet just to have the ear done. Enough said, but I would highly recommend this clinic and thanks again to the whole staff and give you animals a big hug and kiss everyday. Thanks so much! Ron and Linda Braxton Fairfield, Ca.

Dr. Barney is the absolute best! I have any English bully and have been terrified to have her put under for any procedures. It finally came to the point where surgery was the last and only logical avenue to remedy a very aggressive infection in her tail pocket (she had a severe screw tail and deep flesh pocket around it). Since we needed to put her under anesthesia for her tail, we decided to have her elongated pallet reduced at the same time (so we wouldnt have to put her under again). I brought her in at 8am, I called to check on her at sound 11 and received an update, and had her home recovering by 3pm! Dr. Barney left a little nub so itll look like she kinda has a tail after her hair grows back, she doesnt sound like shes struggling to draw her breath anymore and he did everything well below the estimate he had given me. Every time hes seen Lily, he has treated her with love and care. I couldnt ever recommend anybody or anything more strongly than I can recommend this awesome doctor! Thank you very much Dr. Barney and God bless you and your staff!

My dog got stuck between the slats in the fence. I couldnt get her out. The section of the fence came off with the dog stuck in it. I tried everything, but couldnt get her out. I called Barney & Russums they said to bring her in. Fortunately I had a van that would hold it all. I parked in the parking lot at Barney & Russums and told the clerk about the dog in the fence in the van. She called Dr. Barney. He came out to the van to see. Sure enough, the dog was stuck in the fence just behind her front legs. Dr. Barney asked for a hammer and RIPPED the nails out, freeing the dog! Hurrah! A crowd had gathered and everyone cheered. Dr. Barney took the dog and me in for a quick check-up. Penny, the dog, had some bruising, but was fine. Dont know what I would have done without Dr. Barney! The nails in the fence had rings around them so you werent suppose to be able to remove them. This is ONE reason we go to Barney & Russums.

Over the past 35 years all of my dogs have been patients of Dr. Russum. Most of my dogs have been rescues and some have had multiple health problems. I once had a Maltese named "Troubles" who had a serious heart condition. He saved her life more than once and actually called me at home after hours to see how she was doing. Even human doctors do not do that. He always renders great service. I especially like that the practice collects donations from clients and uses the funds to treat animals owned by homeless people in the community. I am not aware of any other vet who does this. The practice has really grown over the years and it is sometimes hard to get through on the phone. Dont give up, eventually you will get through. They need to add more lines. Their prices are competitive with other vets in the area. I live in Rio Vista and drive to Fairfield to see Dr. Russum because I have confidence in his care of my pets.

I have been with Barney and Russum for over 35 years. I wouldnt go anywhere else with my pets. I have always gotten the best of care for my pets and the whole staff is very caring. Dr. Barney and Dr. Russum are so compassionate when you have to let your pet go. I am a member of several animal sites on facebook and whenever someone is asking for a good vet, I always recommend Barney and Russum along with address and phone number. Thank you all for all you do. I would like to add on to my comment. I have had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Sam who did a recent yearly check up on my 2 cats. All that went well. Cats are on diets. Then Friday my granddaughter and I brought her boston terrier in because he contacted mange. The kind that is contagious to humans. Dr. Sam squeezed us in and was sooooo helpful. First real answers weve had all week. Thank you Dr. Barney and Dr. Russum for adding Dr. Sam to your awesome staff.
