I am disheartened to see so many bad reviews on Eastern Dental. My son has been going here for years and we have had nothing but good experiences. We switched from another dentist (who I will not name since I am not reviewing them and I wont go into details), but they also took medicaid and I WAS allowed back there with him and he had a really traumatic experience with that dentist and the assistant was really mean to my son right in front of me so we immediately started looking for somewhere else for him to go after that. The main issue I hear (and see since we have been to the office many times and seen several parents of new patients come in), is that they cant come back there with their children. Really though, this seems to be more of a problem for the parents than it ever is for the children. Sure if the children are really little and it is the first time they have been to the dentist they may be apprehensive at first, but it is our job as parents to reassure them that we will be okay, that they CAN do it and we will be there for them when they are through. Then they will see that it is no big deal. If you act like it is a huge deal, so will they. Children feed off how their parents act and a lot of time especially with the little ones, the parents are way more anxious about it than the kids are so I can totally see why they dont want parents back there exasperating the situation and making everything more stressful for everyone. I bet you that children behave a lot better when the parents are not present. I have heard parents even make accusations that they must be doing something bad to them back there if they wont allow parents back...that is ridiculous. It is there policy and they tell you that up front and if you have a problem with that or are uncomfortable with it-find somewhere else to take your children. I personally think it is good for them to go back by themselves. My kids will not have me to hold their hands through everything in life and this was a good way to start teaching them independence and to show them that they can do things on their own. It gives them a sense of independence, pride and confidence in themselves. They may have been afraid at first but they faced a fear and went in, everything went totally fine and they did it all by themselves and that is something for them to be proud of. My son is now 8 and he has never had anything but great things to say about the dentist and staff and he never even gets scared to have dental work done at all anymore. Some children hate the dentist. Some children will cry. That is life. To blame the dentist for that though is kind of absurd I think. We have had nothing but wonderful experiences in our years with Eastern Dental.

If I could rate this a zero I would. Honestly people, do NOT take your children here. I took my kids here because it was one of the few places in GR that accepts Medicaid for kids. After waiting an hour, my kids were finally called back. They do NOT allow parents to go back, even if it is your childs first time at the dentist. What a frightening experience for them! They also ask for permission to treat anything they "might" find. I of course said no, Id like to be consulted first. I was amazed at the number of parents who told them to go ahead. And what was even more astonishing was the number of kids, LITTLE kids, who came out with fillings, and even some crowns! I joked with someone on the phone and said you just watch, theyll say my kids need fillings. Well guess what, despite my children having just been to the dentist 6 months prior, they suddenly had ELEVEN cavities between the two of them. Yes ELEVEN! I laughed right out loud. I made an appointment for a later date, mostly because I was forced to. After leaving I decided to get a second opinion. I called asked for the x-rays and after jumping through hoops for a few days I was able to pick them up. When I arrived she asked me when my follow-up was scheduled because they were going to cancel my appointment. When I asked why she told me that it is their policy that if the client feels like they need a second opinion, they are no longer welcome at their practice. What?! Who does that? Some whos shady thats who! The dentist where we got our second opinion confirmed my suspicions, they had ZERO cavities. ZERO!!! Please dont put your children through the pain of having teeth drilled so this guy can make a buck. He should be investigated for fraud.

OVERALL: Small waiting room, Decent Service, Helpful Staff. My 4 year old daughter just had her apointment at Eastern Dental. I was skeptical because of all the bad reviews, but there are very limited choices for Medicaid patients. My school suggested this one to me, so I decided to give it a try. The building is odd, and the door sticks, I thought it was locked and felt silly to call to ask about it, but the receptionist was very nice and helped me in. The waiting room is one of the smallest I have seen, and very crowded, but I had to take into account that they had rescheduled my apointment from last week (which was a short wait for a reschedule compared to GrandValley Dental which made me wait months when they rescheduled). It may be crowded but at least they get you in. It is TRUE that they dont like parents to go back, but I heard that in some cases they will allow it from a person I was waiting with. They DO ask when the kid goes back if you want treatment for any teeth issues, you can say yes or no. I was afraid my daughter would freak out. But think about it people no matter how nice a Dentist is, who relay likes to have their teeth cleaned or filled, and sharp pokey things in their mouth? Some kids came out acted fine, others cried because they just didnt like it. Mine came out happy, she got 2 stickers a tooth brush and tooth paste! No cavities :) So over all Small Waiting room, lots of different kids being kids, and helpful service from receptionist and hygienist that answered all my questions about how my daughters cleaning went. Plus one of the Hygienists took extra time to help a scared child get comfortable with going back.

We had a horrible experience! They tried to tell me my daughter had 4 cavities when in fact she only had two and would NOT let me go back with her even though we had been being verbally attacked and physically threatened by another parent in the waiting room. The staff REFUSED to do anything about it and I was told to go wait in my car while my daughter was treated. I did not, I did go just outside the door and had a smoke so I could calm down. At which point, one of the other mothers came out and talked with me and complimented me on how well I was handling this crazy parent and that I was totally in the right, and she couldnt believe the way the staff was not handling it. In retrospect, I should have walked out long before then and regret the fact that I didnt. But that coupled with the treatment I saw (and heard) other kids getting I wouldnt take my dog to that place! There were children screaming in the back, and one of the girls came out with her mouth horribly bleeding and was told by the front desk staff to "go rinse it out in the bathroom". Have reported them for possible Medicaid fraud and am looking into how to report them for improper care and treatment.
