For more than 20 years I worked in the coffee industry; managing cafés, educating people on how coffee grows and the characteristics created by each region. Four years ago I developed a severe intolerance to the aroma of coffee. As if (almost) overnight, the passion that I had for this little bean turned to fear; the slightest hint of its aroma would cause me to lose my voice, and breathing would become extremely difficult. It is not easy to avoid coffee. It’s everywhere. I couldn’t walk into an office, bank or store without fear someone was brewing or drinking coffee. I’ve left theaters, concerts and business meetings because someone walked in with coffee and I would immediately have the allergic response. Boarding a plane felt like a death trap. I never left home without my EpiPen and inhaler. For four years my life has been controlled by this allergy. I initially sought evaluation with my medical doctor, a general practitioner who quickly referred me to an allergist that I saw about four times over a two year period without beneficial result and seemed unfamiliar with any cases like mine. Jeannie Bruenning The allergist suggested I submit myself for observation at a major university rheumatology clinic, such as Stanford, etc. I came to see Dr. Steed at Achilles Chiropractic and Wellness by walking by his office and seeing some of the information about health and conditions that might be helped through chiropractic care posted on his office front windows in The Pismo Coast Plaza Shopping Center in Pismo Beach where I shop at California Fresh Market. My primary complaints upon first consulting with Dr. Steed were for neck and back pain but also when talking with Dr. Steed on my first visit, I told him of this allergy. I asked if he knew of any procedure that may help. His response was, “I think I do.” Two visits later he performed the Lang Autoimmune Solutions Technique. We both had brought coffee beans and grounds into the room. The room quickly filled with the aroma of coffee; I listened to his instructions, and he began the interactive procedure (seemed like working magic to me). The first time with the grounds coffee – nothing happened. The second with his beans – I felt something change. After the third time (with my coffee beans), I could see in Dr. Steed’s face that he was noticing something different in me. I began to talk. “Your voice is coming back,” he said. “Not only that,” I said, “I’m feeling my chest loosen up, I can breathe. You do smell coffee?” I asked. “Yes,” he said, “it smells like Starbucks in here.” I remained in that same room for 45 minutes. My skin never even began to itch, I didn’t lose my voice and I could breathe! I could breathe despite taking repeated slow deep breaths of fresh roasted coffee. It’s been almost two weeks now. In that time I’ve attended a breakfast meeting and where I didn’t have to leave the room. I’ve eaten at a real restaurant – inside!! I took my time walking around the grocery store and paused in the coffee isle to take in the aroma. When my husband was brewing coffee one morning, I didn’t avoid the kitchen but instead I walked over to the grinder and breathed in the aroma. My brain is having difficultly realizing this new development. I hear the warnings in my head shouting, “YOU CAN’T GO IN THERE!” I then have to remind myself that those days are seemingly over. Today I am writing this as I sit across from my husband doing something we’ve not been able to do for more than four years – we’re sitting in a busy Starbucks on a Sunday morning.

First off, for you local folks that live here, you are very lucky for many reasons! One is, Dr Steeds and his wife Lynn are amazing! Two of the most kindest people I have ever met. I hurt my back trying to lift an ATV (not a TV :), I was in terrible pain, could barely stand, sit, or walk so I called Dr Steeds office at 9pm in the hopes of hearing their hours of operations when Lynn picked up the phone! I was shocked she was personally still taking calls. I explained to her my situation, so she told me to come in the next morning. The next day, I showed up early and Dr Steed got right to work. I could barely lay down on the tables, and when I did, I could barely get back up. Dr Steed was so patient and kind in helping me. He spent alot of his time trying to relieve the locked up pain in my back. I am very appreciative of how much time he spent on me to ensure I would be able to get on the road of recovery and not be in so much pain for the rest of my trip! I left the office about 70% better, which was a HUGE improvement - SO thankful! Whether youre visiting town and injure yourself like I did, or a lucky local, youll be in great care with Dr Steed and his wife Lynn.

While walking my Great Dane of one-hundred-twenty-five pounds and my Malamute of eighty-five pounds on extended leashes, I got caught off guard by two dogs off leash. My dogs took off down an incline with me in tow, trying to shut things down. I should have let go, but instead, I poorly chose to stop the incident by putting a huge cypress tree between my dogs and me… bad choice. Diagnosis; a cracked rib and a torn rotator cuff… The rib healed over five weeks, but, surgery was recommended for the shoulder. Based on a referral from my cousin, enter Dr. Mark Steed at Achilles Chiropractic in Pismo beach. Driving from Morro Bay, I went for treatments three times a week for a month. Dr. Steed came through with flying colors. Hes practically a miracle worker. I nearly had full range of motion, and hardly any impingement left. Dr. Steed is a committed, dedicated, empathetic doctor who knows his stuff and has a true gift with his hands and his timing. Hes the best Ive ever been to, and I have been to quite a few over the years. I cannot say enough about this magic mans work.

Before coming to see Dr. Steed, I was diagnosed with lower back spinal disc herniations and asthma. My previous chiropractic care before coming to Dr. Steed was sort of “one size fits all” and was not very helpful. Under Dr. Steed’s care and his several various techniques all aspects of my symptoms are improving as well as my general health. Dr. Steed is a CCWP (Certified Chiropractic Wellness Practitioner). I have recently resumed my Aikido practice, and my whole sense of well being has improved. I plan to continue under Dr. Steed’s guidance in maintaining and improving my health.
