My husband requested hospice after fourteen months of stage four lung cancer. The nurse in the Aim Program said it was the best Program for him. As caretaker and wife it was my first major disappointment in the Sutter Program. The nice booklet that promised all this support was just not true. The medicine I was required to give him was confusing and scary. They took him off of all the medicines he was taking and he went into a horrible withdrawal. He was pulling out his oxygen and fighting me, so scary! We had different nurses all the time. There was no emotional or spiritual support. The Chaplin called but didnt show. The first social worker told me she could handle everything over the phone. However, the aide was excellent. She took the time to show me techniques on how to bath and move him. If only some of the others had been half as good as her! The nurses I talked to on the phone were excellent. One or two of the many nurses who came to the house seemed caring, the others did not. The AIM Social Worker, Asia, was so great and talked to my husband over an hour every week. We thought this would continue with the Hospice Social Worker, but it did not. I was offered a list of private agencies if I thought I needed more help. I had no training to do all that was expected of me and was not advised that I would be required to handle everything before choosing the program. After talking to friends in other places who loved hospice, I was not only disappointed but felt like I was placed in a nightmare and my husbands home death was not gentle. After this experience, I will request my children not to ever place me in hospice program.

After declining the service several times (as currently we felt it was not needed) and not being heard; we had it forced upon us. The nurse showed up at our home unannounced, unscheduled, and unwanted. A complete lack of respect for boundaries and privacy. Feel like what our family needs and/or wants is disregarded and not respected by this team. Would not recommend. Am left questioning how to continue to trust the medical team moving forward since they wouldnt listen to our request and decision in this matter and forced the issue.
