I had a doctor I recently dropped because she did not see things pointed out to her (like obvious foot and leg, and nose lesions). She did not hear me or want to touch swollen areas I was concerned about. Plus when referred to her on an emergency basis she left me unattended in an exam room for 45 minutes. She also changed a major prognoses (Lupus) in the computer system but failed to tell me. In the meanwhile I told family I had Lupus, bought books on it, etc. The same doctor affixed a prognoses of diverticulosis so firmily in her mind that it precluded anything else. If I called for an appointment with pain in my stomach she would call back, wanting to prescribe 2 strong antibiotics without seeing me, though I had told her several times the meds did not work for the pain. I told her I felt I needed to be seen but she replied that most of her patients preferred the meds being perscribed without having to come in. I did not think her diagnosis was accurate, so switched from her to a new doctor. But that doctor also wanted to prescribe two medications without ever having met or seen me. She kept calling me at home, telling me I was going to have a stoke, dementia, etc. unless I began taking those undiscussed BP meds immediately. She would not listen or discuss past experiences with BP meds and with other doctors - though I had ended up in the emergency room as a result of over-prescribing BP meds by another doctor. (My heart almost stopped. But the response from THAT doctor was that I had not followed the dosing recommendations. I had. ) The doctor chosen in December 09 also cancelled a new patient appointment with me unless and until I had been on her prescribed med for several weeks. She wanted me to go on diuretics, which I cannot take. So I cancelled her as my doctor. Not too long ago a NP twice diagnosed a cyst as a hemorrhoid. I persisted because the diagnoses was illogical, but it took me going to an MD to get it correctly diagnosed. I have been put in exam rooms and forgotten by doctors several times, I have had a doctor call me and leave a recorded message saying I was killing myself due to my drinking - except I do not drink, never have. (Cause of enlarged lived is likely excess weight, not booze.) And an extensive list of allergies totally disappeared when Kaiser went paperless, it simply does not exist anywhere. Add to that lost X-rays WHILE IN the emergency room, so that they wanted to re-do the X-rays they had just done; major misdiagnoses - including they had missed I had no thyroid for years - it was diagnosed through a free physical at Public Health; and two co-workers who died of cancer Kaiser missed, obvious diabetes Kaiser missed, etc. One Chinese doctor told the Chinese daughter of a co-worker that her Mother should stop complaining and just go home and cook for her son and husband and she would feel better. The women was dead within 2 months. The husband was gone a month after that. The list goes on and on. Not small things, but major errors that cannot be accounted for by lack of time in office visits. Concerns do not make it to the file - I have come in with documented symptoms and questions but have been told it is one issue per visit. Sometimes Kaiser doctors refuse to see you if you are 3 minutes late, but they routinely keep patients waiting for half an hour - or more. Finally, I find it problematical that the new trend seems to be to prescribe strong antibiotics without seeing the patient. And the doctors protect each other to the point of blocking effective and professional patient care. Just getting perscriptions is a major problem, too. They charge almost twice as much if patients pick perscriptions up locally. But getting them mailed can take 2 weeks, and there are computer errors. Plus the postal service leaves them outside mailboxes, and for those living in apartments, which a majority do in San Francisco, that can be a huge problem!

There is a double standard here. I came to the ER here last year and my boyfriend was allowed to be in the room with me the entire time. My boyfriend was just admitted to the ER (after an hour of waiting) and I was promptly kicked out of the room by the doctor because I wasnt married to him - Im his registered domestic partner (which in San Francisco is the SAME THING.) I cant help but wonder if its because Im a woman and seen as "weak." I am not happy. He is scared and Im all he has. What kind of hospital does this?!? The front desk is never knowledgeable. Youll call in and theyll tell you one thing and then come in and say another. Often times theyll contradict themselves. Very disorganized billing. Its chaos. This hospital is not run very well. The nurses are lifeless and doctors looks as if all hope has been sucked out of them. I did have one very good woman doctor here, however. She stayed until hours after her shift ended to make sure I was okay. Please avoid having kaiser permanente insurance. You really dont want to come here.

Well I would give them 7 or 10 stars if i could. keep your eye on the ball the coach always said. And it is so extremely important here! We came to be with our long long long term friend as he was checked out on a Friday, and they said you are staying here and gave him a triple bypass on Tuesday. The facility and all the staff were so helpful and comforting. Even though the surgeon who has done hundreds of these procedures, said it was routine, and for him it was, it is unique and life changing for us! and especially for Lyle! These guys and gals are true life savers and when people are in situations like this, and scared really scared, the customer can tend to react. the staff here handles it and does it so well. San Francisco is SO LUCKY to have a facility like this. Thank you to the health care workers here1

Great if youre healthy, but transitional care can have loopholes. Two suggestions based on two separate experiences: 1)Please make sure if a patient needs hospice care after discharge that a nurse is available within 24 hours of the patient arriving home so the patient and the patients family doesnt have to suffer for a day not knowing how to administer pain meds or adjust position to alleviate labored breathing. Also, 2) PLEASE find a way to insure that elderly dementia patients who cannot speak for themselves and cannot dress themselves are not discharged from ER wearing only a hospital gown and a blanket. I know the medical staff is busy, but its a dignity issue that no one seems to own. Possibly volunteers could help? Thank you.

I wanted to say thanks you to Kaiser and their amazing team. Nobody wants to go the doctors office because it can be a scary thing. I was scared because I had to have a minor outpatient surgery done and I had never been through such a procedure. Their team was super professional, knowledgable, supportive and friendly. Every staff member treated me gently and educated me of what needed to be done. and why it needed to be done. Special thanks to Dr. Erica Weiss and Dr. Kim Tan and their teams as they made everything go smoothly and took any fear that I had away. The customer service and bedside manner are amazing here. If you want to be supported and improve your health, then look no further!
