Billy Caldwell
Letter written by my wife Carrie Caldwell On Monday, September 5th my husband visited Emory University Hospital with the following symptoms: chest pain, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and shortness of breath. He explained his symptoms and expressed that he believed them to stem from pancreatitis. After triage and, drug testing, and an EKG he was brought into an emergency room and placed under the care of Roslyn M. Seitz. Ms. Seitzs bedside manner was less than desirable. It was obvious that she quickly made a judgement of my husband as a person rather than taking the time or consideration to listen to his symptoms. Billy was very honest in answering the questions Ms. Seitz asked. They discussed recent alcohol abuse Billy felt, again, that caused what he suspected was pancreatitis. It was at this time Ms. Seitz started speaking in a matter of fact tone saying this was not pancreatitis, it was an issue due to alcohol abuse. It was clear Billy was in severe abdominal pain. While the alcohol use was concerning and a problem that, indeed, needed to be addressed, the pain was also very real and needed attention. Ms. Seitz ordered a CT scan and some blood work then returned to tell Billy that there was no pancreatitis and she would be ordering a GI cocktail. It was at this time I told Ms. Seitz that Billy has never experienced heartburn so he didnt understand the pain and that she would need to explain. She told him what a GI cocktail is but not what she was treating. Throughout his visit she continued to avoid addressing Billy and answer in generalities. Ms. Seitz returned to tell Billy she was releasing him. While clearly experiencing unbearable pain, Billy asked about pain medication she said she could prescribe something, but that she wouldnt be doing so. Her attitude and the manner in which she expressed this made it clear that she categorized him with a group of drug addicted individuals who visit the ER for pain medications; even after his drug tests were negative. She further explained that the pain would be severe, she was not prescribing pain medication, and he shouldnt take any OTC medication for the pain. She advised he should continue life as normal and avoid spicy foods. Directions which, unbeknownst to Billy, would lead to increased pain and discomfort throughout the coming week as well as worsening his symptoms. After 7 hours my husband was discharged from the ER with treatment instructions for GURD and a prescription for Librium. Ms. Seitz advised she would be treating the underlying problem with Librium for alcohol withdrawals, Pepcid to help with reflux, antacids as needed, and instructions to follow up with a PHP. On Friday, September 9th my husband was admitted to West Marion Community Hospital for 4 days where he was treated for Pancreatitis. Had Ms. Seitz listened to my husband 5 days earlier, rather than treating GURD, and telling him to continue eating and taking antacids, he would not have had a week writhing in pain or have suffered further damage to his body. I am both disappointed in the medical attention given and disgusted with the unprofessionalism, specifically the discriminatory treatment provided by Ms. Seitz. Im sure Billys ER visit will be billed quite quickly and am equally certain that the payment we send for your services will be applied without a second thought as to how the payment was made, much like the treatment of your patient. Billy has vowed to peruse legal actions against Ms. Seitz and Emory University Hospital.

No parking. Had to "walk" in parking deck and breeze way. 2 Herniated discs literally took me an hour. The whole time doctors and nurses just having a great time never once stopping to care about the severley injured and in obvious pain individual barely able to stand moving slower than a turtle down the breezeway. Until the very end when I was finally asked if I needed help. Almost broke down in tears toward his kindness because over 100 other doctors/nurses/staff had already passed me. I told them I Herniated 2 discs. They didnt believe me; even though Ive had 1 back surgery for Herniated discs at Emory Spine Hospital. Then send me 3k worth of bills. I pay everything except 6-700 on the first payment and instead of sending me a 2nd bill they send me to collections. (Forget the fact ive already paid for 1 back surgery, 2 knee and 1 shoulder; yeah Im a deadbeat) Oh yeah; after confirming my 2 Herniated discs they discharged me and said they could do nothing for me! Thanks a lot for costing me so much money, while doing nothing but neglecting me, hurting me further and then trying to ruin my perfect credit for not paying all 3k in 1 payment. Ridiculous! Lastly I went to Emory Spine Hospital first who said there is no way to walk in to the Spine Hospital I had to go get ripped off and further injured in the Emory University Hospital. Who literally did nothing other than hurting me further. Does that sound like superior patient care to you or just trying to pad the bill. Go to the ER at our other hospital first then go to our back doctor then go to the spine hospital. Dont forget my back surgeon was ON CALL and covering that night if they would have just let me in. So rack up bills at 3 different places and when you cant pay all 3-5k at once they send you to collections. Horrible company only concerned with profits not patients.

Disorganized and unprofessional. Had 2 heart valves placed via catheter. The surgery went fine, but the staff is incredibly rude. Im a "hard stick" when it comes to giving blood and getting IVs. Durning pre-op ( & after I had a vasovagal reaction), I was told they would use an ultrasound to locate my veins on surgery day. They did not follow through, and I have several bruises from misplaced needles. Here I will list other malfunctions: Staff checked us in a whole day before I came in, resulting in potential billing issues. I came on Tuesday at 6a.m. They had me in the system on Monday at 6p.m. After the anesthesia wore off, someone said I needed an oxygen tube then 20 minutes later someone pointed out that it was never plugged in. Post-op staff couldnt stop me from bleeding, so the surgeon had to come in and give me stitches... Stitches that popped open, so he had to do it again. No medicine was given to me post-op. We had to chase down staff to ask if its protocol to NOT receive medicine. The nurse then says, "Oh Im not sure what happened there, you shouldve been given pain medicine." We then had to wait for the nurse to request medicine from the doctor and for the doctor to prescribe the medicine. After 3 small doses of morphine, they offered me 300mg ibprophen saying they are regulating the amount of narcotics they give patients. After discharge, they told me to take Advil around the clock for pain management. The nurses all seem like they just got out of training. I am extremely displeased and will not go back for any other operation.

EMORY HEALTHCARE ON CLIFTON ROAD HAVE ANGELS THAT HELP “FLOOR 11-E” HAVE A BAND OF ANGELS FOR REAL DO YOU KNOW HOW TO SPOT AN ANGEL? GOD WORKS IN MYSTERIOUS WAYS: You never know when you might end up in a hospital as a patient or just going to care for a patient. Well I ended up going to Emory Healthcare to care for a patient on floor 11-E. Let me tell you something: If there ever was a heaven on earth I found it on floor 11-E. The entire staff are a band of angels for real. God works in mysterious ways. I was on 11-E but each day my daughter and I would go to the chapel and Pray. The chapel is on the 2nd floor. How about the Good Lord lead us to the ICU of the 2nd floor so our church could prepare food and bake homemade pound cake and peanut butter cookies for families that are at Emory Healthcare from out-of-town but have a love one in the unit. Wow! The Spirit of God is some kind of Wonderful to the children of men. I wish to acknowledge the Great Help given by some of the band of angels I met from floor 11-E: Suzzette, Diane, Thanh, Sisy, Ryan, Trevor, Brandy and Pam. Especially, Sisy. She wasn’t even assigned to the patient I was caring for. Yet Sisy came each day to check on the patient. Ms. Pam also deserve high praise for her unique way in which she cares for the patients. Really the entire staff are just Something Wonderful. I know Emory Healthcare and Ms. K. Oldham are proud of 11-E for the Awesome work they do as a whole.
