If I could just rate the nurses I would and I would rate the nurses on the third floor who assisted me with five stars, but I have to look at the big picture. It is scary the lack of information the doctors are allowed to provide and still maintain employment. The lack of accountability and responsibility. To have to beg for information. To lack the honesty to tell a person that they are in the process of dying. Instead, the patient and his wife of almost 53 years were led to believe that there would be hope. This hope wasnt gained with any information provided, but the lack of information and honesty. Not giving the family the proper information to state if comfort care is the best course of action, to not have any hospice assistance during the weekends. To have the oncologist contact you about your father after he has passed away when results came back one week prior. It is evident that the oncologist might not have taken the time to really look at any initial tests. My fathers oncology appointment was moved from a Monday to Wednesday and I had to call and beg to please move his appointment back to Monday. Unfortunately, he didnt survive to make his first appointment. During an earlier hospital stay... Not being able to keep a set discharge date so that the family could be prepared to handle the care of a patient coming home. The lack of assistance from the social workers to communicate a care plan and discharge plan with the family. The inability to keep a set discharge date and having to rush to find appropriate accommodations. Not taking a families request to please look at a wound seriously. To be nonchalant about a concern when from one day to the next an incision went from normal color to fire engine red. I havent been a health care provider for years, but it was obviously infected. I stated to two health care providers that it didnt matter what antibiotic you have him on, if you dont test him to see if it was staph you dont know what antibiotic he would need. The signs were there, the elevated heart rate, the inability to complete physical therapy (in the past he has always been released faster than anticipated), lack of appetite and lets not forget the most obvious sign, the actual appearance of the wound. They sent him home and three days later he was back in the hospital with a black foot and two days later he lost his leg to the knee. The initial operation didnt fail, it didnt have a change to succeed or fail, it was the lack of care. The best part of this is when I questioned one of the doctors about why they wouldnt test when it was evident his response "we can always Monday morning quarterback, your dad almost died, you are lucky his is alive". It took five months for the wound to heal, he worked so hard to have it heal so he could be fitted for a prosthesis and have more mobility and freedom back in his life. He was released from wound care and less than 30 days later he passed due to cancer. He didnt have to lose the foot had he had proper care, he could of had his life for those five months if one person would have just taken the time to run one simple test. Again, I want to thank the nurses who assisted me with the care of my father and my well being. I hope that this review will be noted by the President of Mercy Medical Center so he can assure that these situations do not happen to any other family. I am looking at the sympathy card thinking, well, he got this part right.

This place disgusts me if I could give them a negative number I would. They dont care about the well being of their patience. If you call the president of the hospital to complain the Dr lies. A family member was released and sent home after being told they had blood clots. Dr claimed that it doesnt have to be treated there because it wasnt life threatening. Like they had said many times before. Only this time was different so went and got a 2nd opinion was admitted immediately and in for surgery the following day. Also dont call to complain that the Dr screwed up because youll get a letter telling you that youre no longer allowed to be seen by this hospital. The Dr released them because his condition wasnt life threatening only it really was and once it was brought to their attention they had to cover their ass and say they gave options when in actuality they didnt at all. The option they came to have given him and he denied is exactly the option he was given at the other hospital and had it done. Why would they deny it at one but not the other? This place is a complete joke and I wish that someone would come in and see how patience are treated and close them down until they know how to treat people. I wouldnt wish my worst enemy to be treated by this hospital.

This hospital certainly assumes itself as the "best"... I have particularly issues with their mental health care facility. There are only 3 MDs there, pretty much run the "show" for the whole city of Dubuque. So you really dont have much choice! Plus Iowas law has been rated D or C- at its best. Additional words about their MH Medical Associates. There are a bunch rude and unprofessional staff sitting in the office. I am not sure how they are even qualified to service people with compassion and kindness?

I wish I could give this hospital less than a 0. Dont go here, they are the worst. They contract the ER doctors out so they arent responsible for their crappy care and low level of expertise. If u want to be diagnosed by a nurse and never have a dr explain your results then this is the place for U. I hope I dont mind over paying for the worst medical care of your life. The Iowa medical board needs to examine this places practices asap.

3 stars because Ive gone here my whole life.. But today I called to ask a question to a nurse. I was transferred to the ER nurse instead. She did not state her name, position , or department. She picked up the phone said "Yeah" and then when I asked my question she yelled "How am I supposed to do that." This is why I request specific doctors

I am a chemical dependency counselor. I called this hospital to get information about opiate addiction treatment available in that area. It turns out the hospital operates a treatment program called Turning Point. I was very quickly connected to a CD counselor who was friendly and able to provide the information I was looking for.
