About 25 years ago, my wife and I used to go to a country vet in Brookeville, MD. Dr. Johnson was an older gentleman that had been practicing for 30 years at the time that we met him. Even back then, Lizz and I had many animals and vet visits were commonplace. Our vet was an important part of our day-to-day lives. He was dedicated, understanding, professional and was always 100% there when you needed him. It was obvious that he was following his calling and loved every minute of his work. He had even made house calls on occasion if the need arose. He was mindful of our modest financial circumstances and made every effort to be cost conscious in the face of some pretty tough medical circumstances. The bottom line: he was in it for the right reasons. He was a doctor first and a business second. Doctor Johnson retired and we eventually moved to Westminster, all the while searching for a replacement for the exceptional care and kindness that Dr. Johnson had provided our family. As veterinary care went the route of "people medicine", we watched all of our best animal hospitals get taken over by corporations. We saw the advent of animal "health insurance" take the place of a handshake and agreement to pay installments on expensive procedures. We saw less and less of our vets, more and more paperwork, and more and more concern about the money than the care of the patient. There seems to have been a change in the focus of veterinary medicine from caring for our beloved pets to balancing that bottom line. Banfield is corporate, and they could not have shattered my image of the "downfall" of veterinary care more. My chihuahua had pyometra, a lethal infection of the uterus that can make it burst and cause sepsis within the entire body very quickly. From the moment we arrived, I could not believe the professionalism and genuine caring of the front staff. Genuine concern, a real desire to help and an instant bonding with "Peeps", our little dog. There was no waiting, there was a feeling that these folks shared the sense of emergency that we had. The doctor, April Stevens, acted as if there were no other patients waiting. (hard to do when there are patients waiting!) She did a preliminary examination, really listened to our account of our dogs symptoms and had the courage to say what we were most likely dealing with. No "wait and see" attitude so common nowadays. Once again, the focus was on her patient rather than liability. She performed the necessary tests, but had the confidence to actually state her professional opinion so that we could begin dealing with that reality as soon as possible. As "Peeps" started her testing, we went back to the front to start looking at what all of this was going to cost. It was an emergency spay which had to be done immediately or the dog would die. The bill would be 1700.00 dollars. I have never felt so pressured. The only way to save "Peeps" would be to spend our mortgage money. We relayed that to the staff, who immediately got to work trying to ameliorate the costs. they offered us an internally-offered wellness plan that effectively cut the bill in half in return for a monthly payment of $75. They did everything they could to make the procedure affordable, knowing that we only had hours to make the decision. They really cared. Long story short, Peeps had the surgery and is almost fully recovered as I am writing this, She was released after surgery to overnight with us. But per their suggestion, we returned her to the hospital to be monitored, given meds, and cared for the very next day; all day. This was covered under their wellness plan and cost us nothing. When we picked her up, the staff knew immediately who we were, where "Peeps" was and told us the doctor was waiting for us. Dr. Stevens spent a full 20-30 minutes talking with us about our dogs day and her future recovery. She will have a follow-up visit two weeks from now; also covered by the Wellness Plan. We have found our new "Dr. Johnson". Thanks to Dr. Stevens, Michelle, Angela and Elsie. We are dedicated clients!

Dr. Tawnya Hopkins (aka: Dr. Hops) is one the most amazing veterinarian Ive ever met. We went through 5 different vetrinarian offices prior to going to Dr. Hopkins at Banfield in Westminster. All 5 of them were scared of our dog who is a gentle giant. One lady pinned her knees into his chest and they all wanted to sedate him. The dog is big, but he isnt vicious or aggressive in anyway shape or form. he thinks hes a lap dog. He doesnt do well in the car and was a little car sick. We explained that to them. Dr Hopkins took her time with him. she took the time to get to know him. She has never once needed or wanted to sedate him in any way. She is very thorough with his medications and his care. She also sees my older cat and our new kitten. I will never go to another vet for as long as Dr. Hops is practicing. Not to mention the rest of the staff there are amazing. they do whatever they can to get you an appointment whether it is an emergency or just a regular visit convenient for you and what is best for your animal. They work on Holidays. I just had our kitten there on Easter Sunday. Dr. Hopkins and the entire support staff at Banfield are amazing.

If I was to rate this place yesterday I would say 5 stars. They were always able to get us in and took good care of my pets. Even the very difficult time when we had to put down our dog. Could not have asked for a nicer staff. My cat has had a blocked bladder issue in the past and we have taken him to the pet ER both times since it was either the middle of the night or vets were closed. But today was a Saturday and he had another episode and we called to get him in first thing and they said they didnt have a Dr. Available to do that procedure?! Umm so your a pet hospital with no vet available? Ok... Well they directed us to the pet ER. We were trying to avoid that because of cost reasons but took the cat there anyway. I just feel they didnt want to deal with the situation on a Saturday. Just really not happy with the way the situation was handled knowing that cat can die within hours of the symptoms. So thanks for not helping us today....

They were nice enough to take my dog last minute when his nail split and our vet was closed. However, they are way overpriced and didnt even fix the issue. We spent $140 at Banfield to get a quick fix. We still had to go our vet and spent $155 to get a real long term solution. Ill stick to Carroll County Vet.
