For the indepent" living apartments, I can definitly say the BEST part of Oakwood commons is the people/staff! It is a great size because the y really know their residents. The true caring and kindness of the staff from those manning the front desk, housekeeping, young waitstaff, the heads of departments and the professional resident service people such as Shavon, both Karens, Tashia, Steve the head of the kitchen/dietary and Donna Brandt in marketing is amazing and very sincere! 2 years ago my mother in law was ill and gone from their apartment for a month between hospital and rehab. They helped us with a la carte services for my father in law which allowed them both to end up staying in the independent living portion. Nurses aides actually started helping him the day before we contacted them for help. Just yesterday, Debbie at the front desk assisted my mother in law to call and cancel her visa after she had a phishing call, gave them information, was unsure, called us and then had difficulty making the long distance call as the credit card company needed to talk directly to her and would not cancel on family(our) call. The front desk could probably make a TV series about the problems they solve, whether directly or in communicating with the correct person to help the resident. The transportation people such as Jim patiently help those such as our parents who are very slow moving, can hardly see due to macular degeneration yet want to go to Meijers or other area store each week for groceries. The housekeeping each week could be deeper yet for the few hours at least the bed is changed for you and sheets washed and dried, at the apartment is cleaner than when they started each week. At another facility, we had to pay extra for the clean sheets to put on the bed.My mother-in-law also likes the dishwasher and having her own washer/dryer which they did not have at another independent facility. The bistro is a great option for residents to "treat" their family members to a meal, pizza, or just an icecream cone out of their monthly food dollars. Also for those alone, it is a great place to see and connect with people they know from the church service at oakwood commons or their former home in Dearborn. , Dbn Heights.. My mother in law enjoys the speakers and entertainment they bring in though I wish i could get them both to go to the 11am exercise class which is very well attended . It is what the resident makes of it, not a perfect place, yet we have found the people of Oakwood commons very caring. They all even know my in-laws dog and ask about her by name. Spend time especially their first month there getting them out of their apartment to some of the things on the calendar so that they might feel more comfortable going by themselves the next time. wow the last 4 reviews before mine must have been for assisted living and one definitely for the memory care which I cannot speak for directly yet. The "independent" living apartments are a different story! I would give the rehab/skilled nursing middling marks (different web site). I actually think the therapists are the best part of that facility. My parents had 7 strokes between them so we were at facilities where they only had group therapy which was a waste or the nurses aides had way way too many patients ie one nuses aide to 14 patient ratio! If you are looking for that kind of care for a parent look at the michigan.gov site for 3 and 4 star places near you and go visit at least 3 or 4. Ask them about their nurse aid to patient ratio and the turnover among their nurses aides. Last of all, set up a family visiting schedule so your parent doesnt feel lost, you can catch problems early and work with the facility to correct them, and you can provide mental stimulation and love to your parents week. Phone calls, letters, visits from family are important even though you are "paying all that money for someone else to take care of them" as one of our family honestly felt.

This place isnt worthy of one star but necessary to post. I have never been more disgusted by staff and administration than at this facility. I have seen more compassion from animals than the employees that I dealt with here. My sister and I were sold on their "dementia ward" lets call it what it is, a room where they stick patients so staff can play on their phones. If staff is paying attention to patients, most likely they are talking down to them. You are better off leaving your loved ones home alone to fend for themselves

Dont judge a book by its cover. The place looks nice on the outside but the rehab area was very disappointing. My mom was there for about 10 days, never saw a doctor. They told her just to pee in her diaper, instead of asking to be taken to the bathroom. Never talked to our assigned social worker except when she was mad that we moved our mom. Check the place out before leaving your loved ones there.

This was the worst place I could ever imagine sending anyone it was gross. There were carpets that were dirty and smelled terrible. The nursing staff was awful and seemed as if they did not care about the people in it. The physical therapy portion was bad as well nothing looked clean on the inside and it had disgusting odors everywhere. Overall terrible experience.

What a nightmare! Aide refused to give urinal and wont do bedpan. Social Worker was NOT helpful and was stupid. Refused to acknowledged power of attorney or family member. Food portion were small. My dad has no teeth or denture and gave him steak and pork chop. never never again!!!

Several incompetent, or arrogant or lazy staff. Indifferent to patient care, adversarial approach to patients and family. PT and OT are scant and claimed treatments they never gave. Nice grounds for walking.
