This is the worst office I have been to. Not to mention, the staff and the doctor are the worst that I have been treated by. Now, I will admit, I was 5 or 6 minutes late for my appointment. I got stuck in traffic and I should have pulled over to call in that I would be late. I apologized profusely and was still seen, after the other appointments that were on time. That was completely understandable, I had no problem with it. Now, what I do have a problem with is the fact that the doctor didnt want to hear what I had to say when it came to my medical past and what I have been noticing with my body...a body that I know well. Nope, shes the doctor, so shes right about everything. Cool story. I was given a high-dose hormone birth control pill called Ortho Novum. I began taking it on a Friday and that day, I noticed a headache and some nausea - no big deal, its the side effects of a new birth control pill. However, Saturday through Monday, everything just got worse. So, I started looking up interactions of the Ortho Novum with different medications, as I am on a few, and it doesnt react with any of those. I had never felt like this before and (correctly) assumed that it was due to the Ortho Novum, as that was the only thing that had changed in my routine. I looked up side effects of Ortho Novum on the FDA drug site and start seeing a section for "severe side effects - consult doctor immediately" and it listed how I had been feeling: weak, tired, confused, dizzy, uncoordinated/loss of balance, difficulty with speech, and the list goes on. I mean, I needed a GPS to get to work that day and my boss thought I was hungover at work - thats how out of it I was. So, I do like the warning says and attempt to consult my doctor, at which point I get the receptionist and start to tell her how I am feeling. SHE informs me that those are not reactions of that medicine and are probably due to my other medications - medications that I have been taking for years, mind you. When I informed her of where I found the information and that I have been taking my other medication long enough to know what are side effects of those, I still get the same answer - those arent side effects of that medication and Im sure the doctor will agree with me, but Ill have her call you back. First off, you are a receptionist and under no circumstances are you to give your opinion - only take down the issues and pass it on to the proper person. Second, I never got a call back that day. Not even the next day. So, I ended up calling my primary care doctor, told him what was going on and he brought me in for an appointment. Not only does he, in fact, conclude that those are side effects of the Ortho Novum, but also looks back in my file and informs me that since I have a history of Thrombosis, I shouldnt be on this specific birth control anyway - as Ortho Novum specifically indicates to not take it if you have a history of thrombosis, deep veinous or otherwise (fancy name for blood clot). Which, I tried to tell Dr. Gibson about in the office - having my right bartholin gland removed due to large, multiple clots and that it was an issue on my left side, as well. So, a week later (today), I called back to see about getting prescribed a different birth control pill (cant go without hormones because of other female issues) and am told to just use a condom and that because of the reaction I had to the extremely high dose of Ortho Novum, she cant prescribe anything else. Hmm. Thats funny because I didnt have any issues with my previous birth control pill. The condom will not make a difference since I CANNOT HAVE CHILDREN! It is the hormones I need. From having my phone taken out of my hand like I am a child upon the doctors initial entrance of the room to being hung up on to being told to find a new a doctor after questioning the no birth control and condom suggestion, I am done with this office and this staff.
