If there were a negative rating it would certainly be applicable to our situation. My father went in for a simple discectomy this past Friday. He expected to go home that evening. The dr said he had a spinal fluid leak and she wanted to keep him overnight. We were fine with that. We were greeted with a wonderful nurse and the night nurse was absoluamazing. Come Saturday morning. I was absolutely appalled at the lack of care. I myself was on crutches from knee surgery while trying to care for my dad who recently lost my mom to sepsis. I am an only child. Long story short, nurses never came when he called for help to the bathroom. This resulted in accidents. He asked for a sponge bath three times Saturday and was flat out ignored twice and handed a wash cloth the next time. We didnt see anyone but a CNA names Tammy from 3:00pm until 9:00pm. She entered the room and i asked her if he could get a clean gown because he had been in a gown with wet urine for four hours. We were in the room at the end of the hall or I would have gotten it. She very rudely explained that she had 30 patients and most of them needed more care than my dad because they couldnt do anything for themselves and would get bed sores. When the 7:00 nurse came at 9 my dad had a fever and low pulse ox. We have no idea how long that had been going on since his vitals hadnt been taken for 6 hours. Looking through his records, the temp was recorded as under 100 when it was 101 and she showed it to me. They also states in medicals records that his vitals were taken every four to six hours. To sum it all up, if you would like a smiling compassionate timely sanitary nurse, got to another hospital. Feces was cleaned off floor with a bed pad and mopped two days later. The pad was left in the room in the trash. Absolutely the worst experience of my life.

I came in due to what felt like lock jaw from a wisdom tooth extraction, so as you can imagine it was EXTREMELY painful. I was in the e.r. for about 6 hours, but my mom has worked in hospitals all my life and that is totally to be expected. Turns out I had an infection so they immediately took me into a room. I was told to stay over night where my pain became excruciating. I had Sydney and hanane, and without a doubt these are the best nurses I have ever come across. In the highest peak of my pain i was needy and crying and screaming and my pain and fever continued to skyrocket and these women were on top of it with so much compassion and patience for my needs. Not to mention sydney had her own bun in the oven and truly showed over the top commitment and care to my struggles aside from her own. My standards are pretty high so when it came to night time I was really skeptical that there was no way the nurses would be as good as the ones I just had. I was totally wrong. Kandace and Cynthia eased my worries to the fullest. Cynthia routinely stopped in and Kandace was so punctual and on time for everything I needed done. Firm, yet understanding I felt like my health was deeply rooted. That they were determined to make me feel better. Not once did I ever have to call and ask for pain meds, Kandace was consistent and Cynthia was right behind tending to personal needs. These women Ive mentioned are without a doubt the best Ive ever encountered. I couldnt have asked for such better care in a time where I needed it most. Even when my pain got to me and my temperament was out of control these ladies did whatever they could to get me back on track and make me comfortable. Thank you duke for hiring these women, they have the intellect and brainpower it takes to be in healthcare and i couldnt have asked for more.

I had to take my husband to the ER Saturday night. I have been fortunate enough to have not been in an ER for about a decade & first time having to go in Raleigh. Husband was having chest pains & by the time I dropped him off, parked they already had him back & hooked up, checking him out (less than 5 minutes). I mention this because I lived in LA for 10 years were ERs are typically overwhelmed with non life-threatening concerns. Nurse Molly explained to me they have a system set up specifically to deal with this. Because of his condition, they had to check out a few possibilities (i.e. blood clot, heart attack, etc.) I did not find this wasteful. He didnt want morphine & they didnt push it, so he was allowed to make a choice. Much of it is computerized--scanning in meds, step by step what to do, so I felt there was a strong protocol/procedure in place. The had a system set up with the billing person, "concierge", etc. wanting to know what they could do better. I am hoping we dont have to go to the ER again, but if we do, the quality of care is one less thing I will have to worry about. Shout out to Nurse Molly, Drs. Hill & Gersh & Sharon.

Terrible. Bad management, horrible ER experience. I would give 0 stars if possible. My wife is pregnant, her OB told her to go to the hospital because one of her legs was really swollen and they were afraid of a blood clot. After waiting 3 hours in the ER, we get back there and they tell us they dont do the ultrasoumd needed after hours! Its a hospital, people need these services all day and night. The charge nurse never told us that the service we came for was not available and she let us wait over 3 hours just so the doctor could tell us there was nothing he could do. We asked why no one told us earlier. Of course the money lady was promptly in the room to collect payment. We pointed to a clause in the admission paperwork that had the procedures for denying payment and using an arbitration process. They refused to give me a copy of paperwork that was promised in their own contract! We walked out pissed, lost 4 hours of our time and still need to go to Rex. Bottom line, if you ever need emergency care, die in the ambulance on the way to Rex before you let them take you to Duke Raleigh hospital.
