Childrens hospital was fantastic- there was a doctor named Dr Rakoo (I dont remember how to spell her last name) who made such an impact on my daughter with her knowledge her kindness and her empathy. Now that my daughter is in the adult side (with a chronic disease) we often remember Dr Rakoo and wish she was on the adult side. On the adult side (I wont name names even though I should) the doctors are arrogant asses. My daughter has had numerous trips to the ER with out of control pain. The drs are in no hurry to help then give a little speech about addiction and why they dont want to use pain pills. Duh! I get that. I dont want my daughter to be a drug addict either and she wont be. The pain just has to get under control. Then about a month ago was probably the second worst experience of her life (first being when her intestines ruptured). She needed hernia surgery. Right after the surgery she woke up and was in out of control pain. I was in the outpatient waiting room when a nurse called me to the room to see if I could help my daughter calm down. The nurse said they couldnt give her more pain medicine. Because my daughter has Crohns disease she knew the amount of pain meds they were giving her was not sufficient- they didnt care. I asked to speak with someon in charge and instead was sent an incompetent resident. To anyone reading this if you are ever in pain dont go here!!! Every single doctor who came to her room was like we arent giving more pain medication because you dont want to be addicted. When I tell you she was in pain- I am not kidding! The worst you can imagine. She was begging me for help. I felt so helpless. A doctor would come in and say shes healing well and then give a low dose pain killer which obviously wasnt working. This went on for three days!! We are at a hospital - who has signs hanging about how patients have the right to have their pain controlled!! Please dont believe them. Finally the last day my daughter was there (mind you the pain is still a five) a nurse practitioner came in and was like an angel. She listened. She was empathetic. She offered ideas to help. Mind you- this was to be outpatient surgery yet my daughter ends up at the hospital writhing in pain for five days! The nurse practitioner at least tried. My daughter agreed to go home as we reasoned if she is going to be this uncomfortable she might as well be in her own bed. If by chance any of the surgeons are reading this- I know you are busy and I know that my daughter was just a number to you but you should be ashamed of yourselves. I hope for your sake no one you love is ever treated like you treated my daughter. Its unforgivable. Step up and act like a human. I cant wait until we move out of this area and dont have to deal with the Hershey surgeons any longer.

Being a PSU Graduate I trusted this healthcare system, I thought since PSU was an amazing place for me the past few years that this hospital would be the same way. I have nothing but disgust for the way that everything is handled. I entered the hospital with breathing problems and sat in the waiting room for 10-15 minutes at 4am. You could tell that I was in distress. Shouldve taken me back as soon as possible. Not only that but they placed me next to someone who was essentially dying and I was extremely uncomfortable. I was a student and clearly far away from my family. I even asked for a phone to call my mom who lived an hour and a half away because you do not even get cell service. That took them an hour to even do. On top of that when they were doing tests they had to redo them because the nurse clearly had no idea what they were doing. After a nearly 3 and a half hours sitting in the cold room next to someone again who wouldnt stop screaming in pain I was sent home with just an inhaler. I started receiving statements for my bills because I found out that my insurance stopped covering me. Bills kept coming and they would change the total on them. Eventually I received a call from a very very very rude man named Ken in the billing department. If you ever have to deal with him, just transfer yourself to someone else. He is EXTREMELY rude. But it gets better. The next person they transferred me to just laughed at the situation. I was trying to stay as calm as possible because you shouldnt be giving attitude to someone who is clearly caught off guard about the bills and doesnt know exactly what is going on. The billing department is the biggest joke in the entire world and doesnt even care what you have to say. BEWARE, if they send you statements and you are trying to work out something with a financial burden, pay something, or else it will attack your credit report and calling in to figure everything out is a total joke. I am completely done with this hospital. I will make sure that when students contact me to ask where the best place to go for medical issues; I will direct them to either urgent cares or Lancaster general. Hershey Medical Center is the biggest joke ever with the most disrespectful employees I have ever had to encounter.

Not only did this place neglect to help me after a terrible work injury, they have just recently gave me the screws again. I was going for a loan at my bank, they have a 744 dollar debit on my credit. I have to pay this and then I can be approved. I called in to settle the debt, the girl on the phone, laughed and said I owe significantly more than that. She wouldnt say what the outstanding balance was, sent me a letter to explain the debt. 2 days after that conversation I went back to my bank to tell them I am working on the 744, but now I was informed it is 2200 that I owe, not 744 anymore. I could hardly walk, I had no job, no income what so ever, no insurance.... They told me that I could get financial assistance through them. Nope, something was wrong with the paper work so I was denied any discounts. I had to pay 200 dollars for doctors visits that involved an interrogation process questioning me about my work injury, where was I hurt(as in place, not where does it hurt), how was I hurt, when was I hurt, what were you doing..... every time I went there. I wouldnt call that medical care, I would call that corporate care. They did not care about my pain, they did not care about my financial trouble, and they did nothing to help. Only reason I left this review was because of the tripling of my debt owed.

Going to the hospital is never a "fun" experience, especially when you enter via the ER, however, I give them five stars after my recent experience. I woke up in the middle of the night with sudden, horrible pains and when we arrived at the ER the place was packed... every bed full, it seemed, and then some! However, this didnt seem to affect the quality of care they provided. There were multiple people (nurses, doctors, students, administrators, etc) attending to my needs. I never felt abandoned or "in the dark" as to what was happening, as Ive felt at other hospitals with other experiences with other family members. We even overheard other conversations (through the thin curtains) with other people loudly complaining and swearing and treating the staff rudely, but even in those situations, we heard the staff acting professionally and treating those people with the same degree of kindness and professionalism they gave us, despite the bad attitudes thrown at them. Long story short, my case turned out to be a painful gallbladder attack... if youre reading this and youre a woman in your 40s, do yourself a favor and cut back on foods with saturated fats... gallbladder pain is tough and something youll want to avoid if at all possible!!!
