I cant even describe how upset I am with UPMC East. My fiancé and I rushed our 3 year old son there because it was close and he only needed his elbow "popped" back into place(nursemaids elbow) and this is where I took him last time it happened years ago. This was not the first time this happened to my son so I knew what was wrong immediately. After finally getting into the room, I explained everything to the nurse. She insisted it was his wrist and ordered an x-ray. When the x-ray came back, she said that they couldnt find anything but to call pediatrics ortho and see them within 3-5 days. I then retold her that my son could not move his arm. She then proceeded to bend my childs arm all types of ways (note that my sons forearm is dislocated) and said "I can move his arm from his shoulder and his elbow so its his wrist". My son is very shy around people he does not know but when she turned his arm like he was shaking hands with someone he screamed "ow" and "stop it now" and smacked her hand with his other hand. I knew right then she was wrong but didnt argue. She put a splint on his arm and left. Another nurse came in and gave my son Tylenol and discharged us. She was in the room when I told my fiancé that Im taking our son to Childrens because last week someone we knew took their child to UPMC East for his wrist and it ended up being broken after they got a second opinion. She became very snippy saying that Childrens will do the same exact thing that they did and there is no reason to go and to just make the appointment with ortho. She left and came back again after telling the other nurse our concerns and said that the other nurse said to make an appointment with ortho. She then said very rudely, "but do what you want but we are rarely ever wrong," and left. After we left, I took my son to Childrens Hospital. When we were being triaged and asked our reason for coming, I explained. The man shook his head and took the splint off of my sons wrist and said it was his elbow and the splint was doing nothing for him at all. When we got into the room, the doctor fixed my sons elbow within seconds!!! It was in fact a nursemaids elbow. I am beyond furious with UPMC East for so many reasons! The first thing is that they should have known what a nursemaids elbow was. It is very common! They wouldnt even listen to us. Second, Im furious because we didnt see a doctor! We saw a nurse and a certified registered nurse! Thats fine and all if she knew what she was talking about but she did not. After I voiced my concerns and mentioned I wanted a second opinion from Childrens, the doctor should have come in and examined himself! The third reason why Im so upset is that the nurse was so snippy with us when I said Im taking my son to Childrens. They made me feel like I was dumb for going there. They made us doubt ourselves about the health and well being of our son for not wanting to just follow up with ortho! If we blindly trusted them, our son would have been in extreme and UNNECESSARY pain until we could have gotten an appointment. This ER was terrible and I will never go back. They were unprofessional and believed that they could never make a mistake and that we were idiots for not listening to them.

I went into the emergency room last week with a dislocated Shoulder. I have done this a dozen or so times because I have a bad shoulder. I couldnt get it back in myself so I went to the ER so someone could help me out. I told them it was likely a posterior dislocation rather than anterier. They still took the wrong X-rays. Sent me back for more X-rays while manipulating a dislocated shoulder. They didnt even have me in a room. They had me in a wheelchair in the hallway. The PA came back stating that the physician could not see a dislocation in the X-ray which was wrong because if you would have looked at my shoulder it was visibly out of place. No physician would treat me. Instead, the PA was gracious enough to attempt to help me get it back into place. It took 20 minutes while my fiancé provided countertraction with a blanket that I had to bite on so I didnt scream in the hallway. Finally it went back into place. This is absolutely unacceptable. Do not EVER go to this ER. Dr. Lee McGee was the physician. Then when I asked to see him he refused until I demanded that he come over. Then I called the ER to speak with the ER director and was told they would not receive my call. I was completely mistreated at this hospital. Mistreated, disrespected, and misdiagnosed. If there is UPMC staff reading this, I highly suggest you call me to resolve this issue because i plan on taking this much much higher.

If I could give 0 stars, I gladly would. UPMC has got to be the worst health care system ever. I thought they couldnt get worse until I went to UPMC East. The staff is rude, the nurses are useless, and the doctors are not informative at all. My visit was greeted with nothing but laziness. If someone is telling you that they have a problem, it shouldnt be ignored. The doctor I had pretty much didnt do anything. He was rude, arrogant, and never let me finish my sentences. He basically insulted m e and based everything off of appearances. I wish I was making this up, but I really experienced this. I think from now on I will stick with the AHN. I have never left the emergency room feeling worse than I did before. The entire process just made me feel so uncomfortable. Never again. Do yourself a favor and skip it. Also, this is directed toward the emergency room. I will give credit where it is due. My grandmother was recently kept here and had perfect service. They treated her nicely and she was very happy and pleased with her visit. Her doctor, Ann was absolutely amazing. She is about the only salvageable thing about this place. I would definitely recommend her to everyone. Timothy and David were also really nice guys. Very respectful.

Today on 9/5/2016 my fiancée and I took our son to the ER because we were sure he had popped his elbow after horse playing. First we were triaged for no apparent reason, then we sat in the lobby for a half an hour and were finally called back to a room. They physically checked his elbow and even ran an x ray, which should have caught the misplaced boner. The nurses said it was his wrist that was affecting him although we were sure it was his elbow(we listened because they are nurses so we believed them). My fiancées mother called, she mentioned something similar happened to another child we knew and UPMC East did the same thing and mis-diagnosed and ended up going to Childrens Hospital afterward. After we left we decided that we would take him to Childrens and low and behold it was his elbow after all! They popped it back in and after wasting 3 hours with under-educated and careless nurses at UPMC east my son was all better. The doctor at Childrens removed the stint place on our son and immediately recognized that it was not his wrist. TL; DR TRUST YOUR PARENTAL INSTINCT. Just because someone has a degree or "education" in a field doesnt make them completely right.
