I have had arthritis and fibromyalgia since I was 11 years old. Thats 16 years now. I have moved a lot, and diagnosing a generally healthy, physically active child who has gradually developed chronic pain without being in some sort of accident is difficult and can require teams of doctors, so Ive seen my share of pain management doctors, and Dr. Hu is far and away the worst doctor Ive ever seen. Apparently Im not the first person to go in and be told that my problem is actually just neck pain, and I need an MRI (which is expensive since my insurance sucks) and I probably have neck degeneration and need expensive injections. My neck is fine. After over a decade and a half of pain management, physical therapy, general practitioner, and neurology visits, someone would have noticed if my problem was just my neck. Also, the pain originated in my ankles, so Im not sure how he was going to try and explain that. I took me three tries to even get him to hear me say that, though, even though I had written out my history, like requested, that very clearly had that information on there. Anyone would yell in pain when having their neck squeezed as hard as he did. He then squeezed all of my joints to see if they hurt, which is an examination I am used to. However, when I told him something DID hurt, he would continue digging his finger tips in saying "here? This? This hurts?" I had to physically move away to get him to stop. He is under the belief that anything higher than your lower back is your neck, which is just weird. He could not find the reflex in my knee and hit it literally about ten times. I left his office is way more pain than I had arrived in. He interrupted me every single time I spoke, and paid no attention to what I had to say. He told me that I did not have arthritis because I am too young. My first diagnoses as a child was Juvenile Rhumatoid Arthritis, when I was twelve years old, but apparently 27 years old is "too young" to have arthritis. He "talked down" to me the entire time I was there. It was horrible. He also told me that other people have better insurance policies "because theyre smart", which was rude and uncalled for. I only came here because I had been paying out of pocket at Texas Pain Relief Group all year and I wanted to save some money, but this actually ended up costing me way more. I am a senior in college with a research position on a lab team and two part time jobs, I dont have time for nonsense, and I certainly dont have time to be in excruciating pain with no decent way to manage it.. I would rather pay out of pocket for a good doctor and just try to force more hours of work into my schedule somehow. Im going back to Texas Pain Relief Group next month, where I am listened to and treated like an educated adult, and my pain is treated rather than worsened.

Dr Hu has been treating and managing my pain after a horseback riding accident resulted in almost every rib on my left side shattering off of my spine into sharp shards resulting in the puncture , collapse and permanent loss of my left lung. There is no operation that can fix me and restore my rib pieces back to where they used to attach to my spine. I am not a candidate for lung replacement because the sharp shards of rib bones are crushed down upon my once healthy lung. Each rib has a nerve that runs through it. So I continually face excruciating pain when I move. Dr Hu has enabled me to return to as close to a normal active life as possible transforming me from a person using a walker to get out of bed and move around to being able to ride my horse on a three hour ride. I have met other people that suffered far less severity of injuries compared to mine and are on Fentyl patches and stronger opiates whose lives are now severely limited. They are usually shocked at how little doses of medication I am on and I am able to have a higher activity with a more severe injury. I attribute the majority of pain relief to the Neurotomies I have had done the full length of my spine. I would highly recommend Dr. Hu for pain management.

Yes, there are some flaws but NO Dr is perfect and for dang sure NO insurance company! I have Ambetter and yes I had to meet a deductible for the year and I already have. But that deductible is a sum total of ALL doctors I see not just Pain Dr. Dr. Hu is a NO nonsense guy!! If your looking to get over on him just to get a few pain killers, let me tell you.... Youve got the wrong guy! He does take his time which you can appreciate and be frustrated at the same time. Hes doing his due diligence. As far as his staff, Natalie and Kristin are sweethearts! Of course, everyone is entitled to a bad day, right? I would recommend Dr. Melvin Hu because he is thorough and his staff is amazing! Again, if your super high maintenance and you think you deserve VIP treatment than I dont know where you can go?!!

Wish I could leave 0 stars IF YOU HAVE AMBETTER DO NOT GO HERE ITS A SCAM UNTIL YOU MEET YOU DEDUCTIBLE HE WILL NOT HELP YOU IN ANY WAY HE ONLY WANTS TO GIVE $900 INJECTIONS I WENT WITH MY MRI IN TOW AND DEBILITATING PAIN AND HE GAVE ME NOTHING BC MY PRIMARY DR WHO REFERED ME TO A PAIN MANAGEMENT HAD GIVEN ME 40 NORCO PRN every 4 hours. My primary wrote it that way for that exact reason so when I saw the PAIN Management Dr I could be given more. 5 AMBETTER paitents in the waiting room all were talking the same thing he only wants to give these expensive injections and everyone had a deductible to be covered and all were with AMBETTER pretty fishy. Waste of 3 hours of my life for his lack of education and lack of abilities to preform his duty as a doctor Im reporting him to the medical board.

Terrible experience Charges 190$ for a doctors visit and shows no interest in patients being able to deal with pain. Ridiculed me for 45 minutes about my weight before telling me he could do nothing for me. I have 7 herniated discs. Then gives me some abstract pain medicine to avoid me taking opioid that my insurance doesnt even.cover (AMBETTER), and wants me to pay 190$ again 5 days later just so he can write me a different prescription. Which i have spent in pain do to his methods.Dr hu is interested in making money, not making his patients healthy. Go elsewhere.
