For approximately 25 years Dr. Terry Jessen has cared for my animals. I must say he was a wonderful Vet. On April 5, 2016, I took my 15 year old golden retriever mix to the office. He was experiencing some back problems. The new Vet, Maureen Ward, quickly informed me the she was buying the practice when I inquired about Dr. Jessen. She stated he was no longer involved in the practice. She suggested I leave my dog there overnight so she could administer steroids to him. When I telephoned about Bucky on April 6, I was told he was getting better but they wanted him to stay another night. The next morning I was called by the vet tech around 7:15 A.M. and was told that Bucky had gotten sick thru the night and vomited. She said he was having trouble breathing. She went on to say the Vet would call me when she came in from Lexington around 8:30. I went straight to my pick-up, drove to the facility, walked in and went back to see my dog. He was absolutely pitiful. All symptoms of steroid overdose were present in my dog. He had begun vomiting during the night, was having seizures and had apparently suffered a devastating stroke. He was absolutely destroyed. His eyes were fixed in his head, he could not move, he was having seizures and fighting for his breath. There was no hope for recovery, I had to put him down. Bucky went there in good health other than he was suffering some back discomfort. I sincerely wish I would have kept my doggie home and cared for him myself. Im certain he would be here with me today. My message to everyone is....... IF YOU LOVE YOUR PET FIND ANOTHER VET.

This hospital advertises emergency services are available. Apparently, not at 8am on a Saturday morning. My St. Bernard lay dying in the back seat of my car, while I frantically banged on the door for help. The less than pleasant red head that greeted me explained there was no veterinarian available for at least another hour. I begged for her assistant; while she insisted I find another office with a veterinarian on site. She even offered that I drive an hour away to the Verona emergency vet. My St. Bernard didnt have another hour. She then proceeded to tell me that she had spoken to the veterinarian, which advised that if I decided to wait on her services, she would not be able to see my St. Bernard for at least 45 minutes past arrival time because she had three other dogs that were priority. Im not suggesting that my dogs life is any more important than any other dog, however, the lack of empathy and concern I received from this staff was appalling. Unprofessional, inconsiderate, and rude is what I would say best described this staff. Luckily, I was able to reach the kind folks at Ashby Animal Clinic. They met me at the door, ad helped me with my dog. They were kind, caring, and showed true concern.

This hospital treated us horribly. We had been with this vet for nearly 4 years. On Dec 19th a Friday at 2:30 we awoke to any pet lovers nightmare, our cat Monkee was on the floor, seemingly parylized and screaming in pain. We called the hospital and were told we could not come in the doctor was leaving in a hour. I explained how critical the situation was but was still told under no circumstances could I see the Dr. And if we just had to see someone we could try another vet. There is not a word for how I felt in that moment......but with my wife crying in the background and my cat dying by the second I started trying to find someone who would see us. About 45 minutes later I was in the office of an unfamiliar Dr. Having to make the decisions to euthanize my pet on a cold steel table, surrounded by strangers. Meanwhile Harrisonburg Animal Hospital has not contacted us at all and any communication through social media is just deleted like it never happened. In what is a dark moment for any pet lover, my hospital turned its back on me and has done or said nothing. By the way the dianosis was severe saddle thrombus leading to parylsis.

Dr Maureen Ward has been taking care of our Katie for quite a few years now. While Katie was terrified of the hospital (all of our dogs have been) she loved Dr. Ward and the staff. Katie has had many health problems and scares over the years including several bouts with cancer. Dr Ward has been a kind and caring person every time we have brought Katie in whether it was something serious or something small. She referred us to a specialist when she felt we needed to be. On Katies last day as we rushed her in with severe internal bleeding, Dr Ward could not have been more compassionate in letting us know what was going on and what our choices were. When we decided to let Katie go, everyone tried to make it easier for us. Katie had just turned twelve and the Harrisonburg Animal Hospital was the only vet she had ever know. I would not hesitate to recommend Dr Ward or any of the staff to help your pet.

I have been coming to Harrisonburg Animal Hospital for more than ten years and have never had anything but a positive experience. Both Dr. Jessen and Dr. Ward are two of my favorite people for the many countless times I have needed their help with my dogs and they have always been there. Dr. Ward saved my Hannas life by quickly realizing that her lymph nodes were swollen due to possible cancer and worked to get us in at Virginia Tech on an emergency basis. Hanna is now in remission and doing very well. Dr. Ward has stayed in touch with me through Hannas chemo. She is our hero!!! I feel like Harrisonburg Animal Hospital is my furbabys second home because of such wonderful care they receive. Best Vets in the Harrisonburg area. Leslie, Jess, Lynn, Tonya and others - thanks for all you do for my babies!!!

I took my sick kitten (just a couple weeks old and rescued from a kill shelter) to the Harrisonburg Animal Hospital today and he received such great care! They made sure to tackle all of his issues (which were abundant) and handled him with gentle hands and great care. The vet, Terry, explained everything to me - the illness, the medication, and my kittens behavior - and he also showed me how to administer the medicine. It is a clean facility with good customer service (including front desk, vets, AND vet techs) and I was in and out without long waits or difficult paperwork. I am feeling confident in my kittys recovery and I am SO grateful to this wonderful animal hospital!

HAH "used to be" a place I could trust to be reliable, professional and caring. My experience there yesterday was none of those things. I saw a Vet that answered to the name of the owner who was the last vet Id seen there over a year ago, this one didnt correct the mistake, gave a cursory exam and billed me $345.00 for the visit. The front office staff was training their new employee and the general atmosphere was choas. Im stuck with the $135.00 worth of unnecessary flea and tick medicine because I didnt read the itemized statement until after paying the bill and I learned today that if you leave with the medicine, it cant be returned.
