A hospital that accepts a trauma patient with a stated injury should consider not accepting that ambulance admission when they do Not have the surgical staff on call to care for that patient.. I was that patient. I was injured at work, a finger tip amputation that was classified as a second level amputation. This injury requires a plastic surgeon to evaluate and repair. My injury occurred at 08:00. The ambulance administered Fentanl and morphine IV. The finger tip has a significant nerve supply. My B/P was elevated because of nerve pain. The ER did admit me to their service and did administer more narcotics that did Not manage the pain. After 4+ hours of level 8 pain/ that is much higher than an Ouchy... I asked for a hand block. The narcotics were toxic and ineffective. I was told they could not block my hand. I suggested they call my Dentist. I know that was not a compliment and the Dr. didnt appreciate that. But it was My finger tissue still exposed and My nerve endings that were screaming. Now five hours after arrival I challenged the staff to tell me what the repair plan was. Well- the next available on call surgeon would not be available until 8PM!!!! that is a 12 hour wait with an exposed amputation- no.. they did no wound dressing. I challenged them I would self discharge and go to another facility- I was told WC would only pay for one triage.. the one the ambulance delivered me to. With a request for a patient advocate and the request that my protest be in my chart and that I was going to call my attorney- they called the plastic surgeon. I Was then given a hand block/ wound dressing and My Husband drove me 30+ miles to the surgeons Saratoga Springs office. There I was given a proper hand block and my finger was repaired. It is called a V-Y transfer. And it does need a plastic surgeon. If tissue is not repaired.. it dies. Then I would have been at Risk to have the finger amputated. This was poor care by this facility. Others at my job site have had excessive delays when trauma was the cause of their ER admission. Now- I go to St. Peters/

I was on a business trip in NY and I had to go to the Ellis ER at 2am one morning because of ongoing pain and cramping in my left leg. The cramps were bad and I only got a few minutes respite between each one - they made me cry and whimper. Ive never had any pain like that in my life, and Ive had two children. The receptionists attitude was cold and she acted like I was really bothering her. Her look said "I dont care if you drop dead." I checked in with her and waited an hour just to get triaged by a nurse who took my BP and said shed try to get me in. The waiting room was absolutely filthy, I almost sat in cough syrup. About an hour later they called me in, and I noticed the same cough syrup that was on a chair in the waiting room was also spilled on the floor at the triage station, no one even bothered to wipe it up. In the meantime another patient came out who had been waiting with me, he said "Dont bother. You have to wait another three hours in there." I went in anyway. A technician came and took another BP. No nurse. No gown to change into. No one came even when another bout with the pain made me cry. It was a room that was beyond filthy - large chinks of wallboard had been peeled off of two walls. Lots of clutter. The bathroom I went to was so dirty I cant even describe it. We waited two hours - when I finally decided to leave on the way out, I saw with my own eyes, nurses sitting around talking and doing paperwork. Really? When I told them I wanted to leave, one said "Im sorry were so backed up." But really, I didnt see anyone going into any rooms so if they are backed up in my opinion it was them not doing their jobs. I left. About an hour after I got back to my hotel room, I had a spasm that made my foot and lower leg cold and numb. I was scared of a blood clot or something life-threatening, so my good friend who was staying in the room next door drove me to St. Peters which is in Albany but only about 10 minutes from the hotel. The difference was night and day - see my review on St. Peters to compare! I would not go to Ellis again EVER.

First of all, my nurse was fantastic in the ER and communicated with me on the treatment; Id go so far as to say she was more competent than the inexcusable doctor that administered treatment. Came in with excruciating chronic neck pain and walked out in the same style, without so much as an isolated dose of any medication that alleviates breakthrough pain. Good going, doc, keeping playing pretend with your NSAIDs and letting your patients continue to suffer because of your inability to show any dexterity, real or imagined, when it comes to administering narcotics. The cherry on top was paying $150 (plus more for other poor souls) for a print out of what they thought the issue was, and then not even telling you what the results were regarding both lines of treatment administered to me. Ive been to ERs that administered and prescribed the use of acute narcotic treatment, and being lied to while undergoing treatment is unprofessional and being left in pain under this clowns oath that being ignorant abolishes any responsibility for doing harm is the epitome of how medical care is failing. Thanks for being a part of it, minus the wonderful nurse. Aka dont come here expecting suitable treatment for pain, theyll just throw whatever amount of Tylenol they can suffice at you and pretend that youre fixed and theyve done all they can.

Always wanted to write something. To be fair, this is regarding my very long stay at the Big E last year for open heart surgery. Most of the nursing staff on the Cardiac Intensive care are wonderful; some a bit overworked due to short staffing and some I am sorry to say were down right rude and spent most of their time talking and ignoring patients. One nurse was so rude she brought me to tears because of I difficulties trying to walk with an untreated charlie horse in my right calf.(I think she thought I was trying to get out of walking) I had to snap at her to finally get them to give me flexiril and guess what? muscle cramp gone but muscle soreness lasted for months. While walking I kept tripping over something and they said it was my catheter tubing. Nope. It was the bandage that had unraveled from where they cut my leg open for the vein. Part of the bandage was still attached to my wound the other part, draggin on the floor. Love grand rounds were they walk around with clipboards or note cards discussing you like you were not there. And for the love of God can you please stop sending the phlebotomist in between 3:30AM-4:30AM to ATTEMPT to draw blood. Some people like to sleep during that time. As you can see, not my favorite place to go.
