My wife and I have worked as professionals in hospitals for 25 years and have observed the bedside manner of a great many doctors with their patients. We both agreed that Dr. Chang’s bedside manner on July 28, 2017 was the worst we have ever seen. My ophthalmologist in Fairfield, CA told me in March 2017 that I had mild-moderate cataract in both eyes. When I asked her about surgical options, she told me that my eyes were a more complex case because one eye does fairly well for distance and the other for near vision. When I asked her several questions, she suggested I consult with one of her former professors at UC San Francisco, a leading authority on cataract surgery, Dr. David Chang. So I made an appointment and we drove 80 miles and paid $375 dollars out of pocket (he is not in my insurance network). My eyes were tested by his staff and then my wife and I (she accompanied me) met with Dr. Chang. He did provide much general information: different zones of vision; that he can choose from 60 degrees of replacement lenses; that he works on the eye with the farthest zone first; that he felt I had an “early” cataract; that a single focus lens is the best option for someone sensitive to change; that cataract surgery is not exact but that he is better than other surgeons at hitting the target. The problem was that he never let me explain why I was seeking a second opinion and, from the moment he walked into the room, every time I attempted to tell him why I came to see him or had a question, he responded, “let me talk” and did so with obvious anger and annoyance. At the end of the approximately 15 minute session (during which several times he said: “it’s going to take me more time, but let me tell you again”), he said, “I’ve tried my best” and got up signaling that the meeting was over. Just prior to meeting Dr. Chang, his staff gave me a book he co-wrote, “Cataracts: A Patient’s Guide to Treatment.” On page 49 of that book, it says: “When you meet with the surgeon, it is important that he or she makes you feel comfortable. You should be able to ask questions...” I fully agree with this statement. And that is why I would never choose Dr. Chang to be my surgeon.

Dr. David Chang is considered the "Go To Guy" by other leading eye surgeons and his record is remarkable. My family member suffered a poor result after cataract surgery which was complicated by previous LASIK surgery years before. The first cataract surgeon did not identify the flattening of the lens which occurs sometimes years after laser surgery. Fortunately, a trusted eye surgeon at Stanford recommended Dr. Chang who was able to "piggy-back" a second lens over the eye and corrected the vision. If you are considering cataract surgery or have had a cataract surgery which was unsatisfactory, I recommend you consider Dr. David F. Chang of Los Altos. You can find his web page and learn about the latest cataract methods and his impress record as one of the most highly recognized cataract surgeons in the world. Dr. Chang is in the current national edition of Best Doctors in America, and is listed in the current “Best Doctors” surveys in Bay Area Consumers Checkbook, San Francisco Magazine, and San Jose Magazine. He has maintained his private practice in Los Altos since 1984, and developed and built the Peninsula Eye Surgery Center, which opened in 2005. He limits his practice to cataract and intraocular lens implant surgery. In 2009, he received what is considered to be the highest international honor for a cataract surgeon - the Binkhorst Medal from the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. He has also received the highest honor for cataract surgery from the Asia Pacific Association of Cataract & Refractive Surgery (Lim Medal, 2009), the Canadian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (Award of Excellence 2010), the United Kingdom and Ireland Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgery (Rayner Medal 2010), the Indian Intraocular Implant & Refractive Society (Gold Medal 2003), and the Italian Ophthalmological Society (Strampelli Medal 2007). In 2006, became only the third ophthalmologist to ever receive the Charlotte Baer Award honoring the outstanding clinical faculty member at the UCSF Medical School.

Dr. Chang is the highest rated doctor in California for Cataracts. I am a private individual, 52 years of age, who lives in San Ramon, CA. I had my one lens replaced 4 years ago. He put in the "focusable" mid range and distant lens that attaches onto the eye ball and muscles and takes time to get the muscles to working. I am going back 10/2009 to the latest and greatest lens the multifocal on my other eye. They have now managed to get rid of those halo circles you see around lights at night. He is the Doctor that teaches doctors on the west coast including New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Washington how to perform the surgery on the latest and greatest lenses that come out. He is involved in the new designs and how they are measured etc. Why not use the best of the best even though he cost more over and above your insurance he is worth it. You must sign something agreeing you will pay x amount in addition for the lenses and surgery. I would not trust anyone else if you are opting for the latest lenses out there that will fit your eye then to implant them is very hard to get right. He is the expert. My last lens cost $2000 extra. He is sooooooooooooo great and trains you on everything before the surgery. He is kind and spends as much time as he can. He has many working with him. You must watch a video before hand. He is as professional as they get. He gets 5 stars as someone in his catagory and you can get your hands on him is worth 5 stars. He did a great job and I had no problems what so ever and it focused. At the time was a big deal so I am excited to be able to actually read now too.

I had cataract surgery done on both eyes (about a month apart) in Oct 2009. My eyes were very challenging; I had significant hyperopia (extreme farsightedness in the +6 to +6.5 range). Most cataract surgeons would probably not be interested in working on my eyes because of this. Unfortunately, my moderate cataracts were becoming a large contributing vision / clarity problem for me when combined with my severe hyperopia. My regular opthomologist (Dr. Saub in Los Gatos, also a great doc) referred me to Dr. Chang, and I am glad he did. Dr. Chang told me I was not a candidate for the newer multi-focal lens technology because of my severe hyperopia, so I had to settle for the single-focal lens solution. Even so, after surgery, I can now easily read with either eye and work on my PC (where I spend most of my time at work) for the first time in my life! I will still get glasses to help my now slightly nearsighted eyes for distance vision, but I am extremely happy to see the world so clearly now, compared to the yellow tinted foggy / fuzzy world I had slowly evolved into without even realizing it! Dr. Chang spent a lot of personal time helping educate me on the risks and probable benefits BEFORE the surgery which was great. He is truly a terrific doc with great surgical and human skills. I highly recommend him and his entire office (other docs there and office personnel) - all courteous and helpful!
