I brought my 9 yr old cat to Van Aken/Dr. Johnson when she began losing weight rapidly and vomiting. Dr. Johnson spent about 2 minutes looking at her and said the problem was a cavity. She performed oral surgery 3 days later and sent her home covered in pee and diahrea. The same symptoms continued so i called the next morning and was told to wait 24 hours. the next day they were closed. Finally they would see her again four days after the surgery. Dr. Johnson said she had no idea what the problem is and kept her for observation. a week later she said she wanted to run 450 dollars more worth of tests because she wanted a specialist. I had already paid close to 700$ and asked if I could pay the 450 on my next pay day (2 weeks). she said no. She told me to pick her up Saturday (in 2 more days) and force feed her until I could pay up. My poor baby was put to sleep the next day for liver failure. I have since looked up the symptoms on the internet and found they are very common and with early detection and proper care she had a 90% chance of survival. But with the time Dr. Johnson waited, the unnessary pain and hardship of the wrong surgery performed, poor diagnosis, and wrong treatment, my kitties chances dropped to below 5%. My poor baby was put through hell before she died. And now they are coldly calling me to come in and pay for the cost of putting her to sleep. My baby girl lost her life and went through added pain because I chose to take her to this Van Aken Pet Hospital. I am so sorry I made this mistake and I hope none of you make the mistake of taking your babies here. I wish so much I had read these reviews before subjecting my poor jezebel to this pain and suffering. I am so sorry Jez

IF THERE WAS A ZERO STAR THIS WOULD BE IT!!! DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR PET! My 12 year old beagle/pitbull mix was diagnosed with cancer last year and over the last couple months has gone down hill, she lost over 20 lbs of muscle and is in pain from arthritis, she also seems to blank out and not even know we are there then snap if we try to pet her when she is in this state (other times when she is lucid she does not do this). We decided it was time to put her down. When I scheduled the appointment they advised me that they would do the exam and then go ahead and let us be there with her while they put her to sleep. The Dr. came in felt the tumors then told me that it was my fault my dog had breast cancer because she was not spayed. She stated she recommended surgery to remove the numerous tumors, spay her, put her on pain med and hormones on a 12 YEAR OLD DOG. They would need blood work before this that would take two weeks plus x-rays. My dog is miserable and a risk with her snapping, I asked the Dr what we could do in the mean time and she said just hormones and hope she would feel better. I asked her what if I did all this and none work and she stated we would cross that bridge when we got there. I asked what if she bites someone and the Dr shrugged her shoulders and stated she would not put down a healthy dog! How is a dog with seriously progressed cancer and black outs healthy! She refused to put her down unless I paid thousands of dollars in unnecessary and invasive procedures. They just want money and do not care in the least. The Dr charged me for the visit and told me to go to the Human Society.

Dr Johnsen told me my rabbit needed a bordatella vaccine and a dental. Believing her I let her give my rabbit the same bordatella vaccine you would give a cat or dog he died suddenly shortly after that... Another time my dog was hit by a car on a Saturday night. Being a Vet tech I monitored his vitals at home and since he seemed fine except for limping I waited until Monday morning to take him in. I told her he was limping badly and that he had been hit by a car and asked her to do hip x-rays she told me we also needed to do chest x-rays to make sure there was no internal damage. I agreed to that after his x-rays she said he was fine... several months later he was still limping so I took him to another vet. The vet did hip x-rays and discovered that my dog had a broken hip that was now healed wrong... she missed his broken hip and my dog suffered from hip pain for the rest of his life! I also worked here and left because I could not stand to see the hoarding that goes on here any longer. So many animals in cages forced to live their lives in Van Akens so called "boarding facility" the cages are rusty, they feed the dogs expired food, they are not played with ever! Oh and the best part the whole place is absolutely and completely infested with mice! There are mice everywhere and they get into everything! Its not sanitary and needs to be shut down for good! All the hospital owned animals need to be rescued and rehabilitated since most of them are cage crazy now! She even has a wild pigeon living its life out in a cage.

I will NEVER go back to that despicable pet hospital again! It should be shut down and the vet thrown in jail! Ok, I took my rescued feral cat into there to get her spayed and first, the receptionist "fill in" was rude, and clearly did NOT know what he was talking about. Then I argued with the vet for several minutes about her "ear tipping policy." Apparently if you say you cat is/was a feral (wild) cat, she "requires" that the cats ear be tipped. If you dont know what that means, she wanted to cut the tip of my cats ear off! Then when I got her home, I found out that the deplorable vet put in a metal tie instead of dissoluble stitches! Not only did it get SERIOUSLY infected, but I had to remove it myself (mom was a vet) and give her massive amounts of broad-spectrum antibiotics. I am happy to say she is doing just fine thanks to my roommates help in assisting me in this whole endeavor. BUT if they are too damn cheap and ignorant to use dissoluble stitches they need to close their doors!!!!!!!! As everyone else has blatantly put it. ONLY BRING YOUR ANIMAL THERE IF YOU WANT TO KILL THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!

My experience at this vet hospital was less than desired. I had brought my dog in and the vet wanted to run all kinds of test.ok. I told them I just wanted to do what was absolulty nesssary for diganosis, due to my money situation. Dr. Burke then ask if I wanted to add on getting the dogs nails done. HELLO??? Later I called in for meds and Dr. Johnson told me, Well I would do it if it was my dog" in a snotty tone. Wanting me to spend a couple more hundred in test. ALL the staff I came in contact with were very rude. Lastly,I went in to pick up meds and I was 3 dollars short. They would not work with me at all. They would not bill me, nor take away any of the meds. They would of left my dog in pain. After I had spent over $300.00 there.
