Great environment, great dentist, great dental assistants, & great front desk assistants with the exception of Amanda. I have had two experiences with Amanda and both have left me saying to myself “I will never come back to this dentist ever again”. It’s really a shame. I have had nothing but stellar experiences with my dental work just too turn around & have the enjoyment of my visit completely negated by a bad experience with Amanda when checking out. In both cases I kindly & calmly questioned the cost she was telling me I owed & in both cases she told me, “that’s what it shows on the computer” in a very rude tone accompanied with a look on her face that said, just pay me and don’t question what I’m telling you. When I did question her & told her that I had already spoke to their insurance coordinator she shot back rudely “really, who did you speak to”, & again with a look that was clearly irritated. When I chuckled, lightly & under my breath, with total surprise at how I was being treated & spoken to she then shot back very loudly “why are you laughing at me, DON’T LAUGH AT ME”. I was so taken aback I decided it was best to stop talking to her at this point. Weird thing was she kept talking to herself and telling me “I am looking at the computer, stop pushing me. I’m looking it up now, just stop pushing me.” Funny thing is I was just standing there saying nothing so clearly she was losing it. In the end she never gave me the correct cost for my visit. Eventually she said she saw the information that was updated by their office insurance coordinator in the computer but then provide me with another total which was still clearly incorrect from what I had spoken to the insurance coordinator about myself prior to my visit. Instead of taking this any further with Amanda I just told her ok and that I would settle with them when my wife was finished with her apt. (We had duel visits this day) Eventually after taking a min I walked over to one of the other front desk workers who was super pleasant and helped me find the correct cost for my visit. This has now happened twice & both times the common thread has been Amanda. Once back in Feb which I reported the experience via a post visit survey and now again in Sept which I am contacting her departmental manger directly about and also posting this review about. In both instances I advised Amada of a mistake, I was treated badly when I did so, she was extremely unhelpful in assisting me in resolve the mistake, & I had to go to someone else involved to get it resolved. Also in both cases the mistake that was made was on the side of the office. I am not sure why Amanda becomes so irritated in these situations. Perhaps she has a beef with someone else in the office. Whatever the case may be she seems to have no problem letting the person who pays her check (the customer) know about her displeasure. She seems to be unable to deal with situations when they don’t match up with what she sees on her computer monitor & if you question her she seems offended, irritated, & inconvenienced. Maybe she works in collections part of the day, who knows. She clearly is not the person they should have at the front desk or reception window for that matter. If you are a patent of this dentist & she is at the reception window the next time you check in for your visit, ask yourself did she greet me with a smile & a kind hello? So far this has not occurred for either my wife of myself. Who knows maybe it’s us or we just keep catching her on bad days. Hope this does not continue or we will definitely be looking for a new dentist very soon. I would have given them 5 stars but as the saying goes “one bad apple can spoil the bunch”.

The Carlson Dental Group had provided dental care to my family during the past two years. For the first year our experience was very much like that reflected in other online reviews for Carlson Dental. Beyond the dentistry, we especially appreciated the courteous professionalism and not being sold treatments and services we didnt want or need. Then on October 21, 2015, one of the Carlson Dental Group dentists treated my wifes left front tooth to remove a chip on its surface. Immediately following that treatment she noticed that the area treated was rough and uneven, and she began to experience pain and sensitivity to hot and cold foods and liquids and to cold air. After two unreturned calls to the Dr. to report the pain and sensitivity, she was advised to use Sensodyne toothpaste, which she explained she had already been using. At her next cleaning appointment, she explained that the pain and sensitivity to hot and cold foods persisted. The dentist visited briefly and offered no remedy other than to continue to use Sensodyne. This did not work. After repeated calls and attempts to get care, she was given an appointment to see Dr. Carlson on October 12, 2016, at 1:00. Upon examination, she was asked why she had waited so long. In response, she recounted the history I have written here. During the visit, Dr. Carlson examined the tooth, took an x-ray and directed a dental assistant to apply a "desensitizing agent" (the effect of which lasted for 24 hours). My wife asked Dr. Carlson about the roughness and uneven surface of her tooth and understood him to say, "With its sensitivity, Im not touching that tooth." At checkout, my wife asked the Bartram office front desk staff for her entire medical record. There has been no response to her first verified request for her records on August 31, more than 30 days previously (the time we now understand HIPAA allows providers to produce records). We believe that HIPAA also provides for records to be inspected in person, but my wife was denied this request and told her that her records would be sent in 48 hours. When she appealed to the member of the office staff from whom she had requested the records by phone on August 31 to vouch for that request, that staff member was instructed by the person speaking to my wife not to answer. Beyond being denied, my wife felt bullied and threatened by this particular member of the office staff, who went so far as to threaten to call the police! Feeling frustrated, humiliated and powerless, my wife left in tears. That was on October 12. As soon as she returned home she consulted HIPAA and filed a complaint with OCR, to obtain our medical records and so that we can move on to a new dentist. In researching HIPAA to learn how to obtain her records, my wife learned that the procedure for doing so should have been detailed in the "Patients Rights" section of the Carlson Dental Groups Notice of Privacy Practices which HIPAA requires all providers to post. However, when she read Carlson Dentals Notice of Privacy Practices, she found no patients rights section. And she still hasnt received the promised dental records.

2011: I have extreme anxiety related to dental visits to the point where I lose sleep for weeks before and after an appointment, even if its just for a cleaning. My first visit to Carlson Dental Group yesterday was the least traumatic dental experience Ive had in ages. Walking in the front door, it doesnt look or smell like a dentists office... its tastefully decorated, the staff is very professional and courteous, and all of the technology did wonders to mitigate my overwhelming anxiety. The tv and headset on the exam chair is pure genius. Rebecca was so incredibly friendly and understanding. She exudes kindness and compassion and does a wonderful job of explaining whats going on as she does her exam and cleaning. I will definitely be going back to Carlson Dental Group in the future and have already begun recommending them to my family and friends! Its certainly in a rather obscure location, tucked back in the office park on Bartram Park where all the buildings look the same and half of them seem to be vacant... but the search is very much worth it for a great dentist! oh AND... for the first time since I can remember, I slept like a baby last night and woke up in a good mood, which has never happened after a visit to the dentist before! 2013 follow-up: Still using Carlson Dental and love them! My husband has also started using them after not seeing a dentist for 20+ years! Dr. Cavka is wonderful and although I still havent fully shaken my anxiety when it comes to dental work, I can honestly say Ive never been more comfortable than with Carlson Dental.
