Gwen, Dr Moore, Lisa, Dr. Swenson, Dr. Chunduru, Shirley, Christina, Cody (and the rest of the CNAs and RNs) I was recently admitted into the ER at South Suburban for stomach pains. It turns out I needed to get my appendix taken out. From the moment I was there to the moment I left, every single person was amazing. Simply amazing! The first person I encountered was Shirly, the OR nurse. It was 8am on a Friday, and the area just got hit with some bad weather, so Id imagine it was a busy night there. Shirley was a "no nonsense" kind of gal. You can tell she runs a tight ship. She was so nice and pleasant to me. She helped me get into my gown and get comfortable in the bed (which felt like I was on clouds). Then I got to meet my ER nurse Lisa. Lisa was so awesome. Super super nice. She kept me company while I was in the worst pain of the situation. She got me the pain meds (which was perfect timing). Just an overall pleasure. The physician on duty Dr Moore. He was a young, educated, outgoing guy who was very nice and personable. Such a cool, genuinely nice guy. You can really tell how passionate he is about his job in the ER there. He worked hard to get the attending Surgeon to squeeze me in to do the surgery that same day. Which brings me to Dr. Swenson, thanks so much for putting a hold on your weekend and doing the surgery for me. After surgery, I got admitted and was helped out by a staff of amazing nurses. Sorry, I dont remember everyones names. But I remember Christina who was just starting her career as an RN (youre gonna be a great one, too) and of course Gwen, who you can just look in her eyes and see how much she cares about what she does and the people she cares for. Just a great, great person. The point of all this is, it was my first time in an ER and being admitted to a hospital and it was made to be such a great experience because of all these people. This is their job, they do it everyday. They dont have to take the extra efforts they did with me. They could have done their jobs and that was it. I would have been fine with that. Its what I would have expected. But thats not what I received. The best way to describe it is I imagine I was treated the exact same as if I was one of their family members if they were to be admitted there. Whoever is in charge of hiring has done an amazing job finding the right people who are really passionate about their careers in their respected fields. Even the physician Dr. Chunduru, when asking me if I smoked I said yes. She could have just said ok and moved on. No. She sat there, lectured me for 5 minutes, then prescribed me nicotine patches. She didnt have to do that. But guess what, Im 2 days without a cigarette. TL:DR Just an amazing place. God forbid you ever need to go to the ER, this is the place you want to go. Being in a hospital can be a scary experience, even for something as routine as an appendix, But I will never forget any of you for how well you treated me. Thank you again!

If you can avoid this place , DO . I spent 5 hours waiting to see a doctor , with such a bad cough I could hardly breath, begging for help to breath. After about 2 hours I did get a breathing treatment. My vitals were taken of course, but although I had a temperature and told them I had been sweating for 3 days from it and had a piercing headache , was offered no help until I went to the nurses station and begged . They finally did give me some Tylenol and two bags of ice that I used to keep cool until I got into a room. The first doctor I saw seemed great. He checked my labs and looked at my xrays. He wanted a ct scan done of my lungs. I consented. I was finally given something for my headache , sent for ct scan and back to my room. Next thing I know the nurse comes in with discharge papers , tells me I have a nodule in my right lung , and I have been diagnosed with "shortness of breath" . That I should come back in 3 months to check the mass in my lung hasnt grown ! I said excuse me but where is the doctor I saw ?? So she brings in a doctor that never did see me , wasnt my doctor to begin with. He proceeds to tell me there is nothing wrong with me "according to my lab work " He asked me what did I want . I said I came there for help because Im sick. I waited 8 hours for HELP. they told me I have an unknown mass in my lung, then threw me out the door and told me to come back in 3 months to make sure it hasnt grown. So i am back at home WITH a fever , with a persistent cough, headache and just as bad shape as I was Saturday morning when I went to the emergency room. I even told them I thought I could have been exposed to pertussis and they ignored that too. So, Sunday will be going somewhere else for help, IF I dont end up having to call an ambulance because they refused to help me and sent me home. By the way , you dont let a person with a history of hospitalizations for pneumonia and asthma leave an emergency room COUGHING AND unable to breath properly, with a temperature. He has to be the rudest , most uncaring doctor Ive ever met in my entire life. To tell someone that they have a benign nodule in their lung , without a biopsy(only way to know) of any kind , and say " come back in 3 months to be sure it hasnt grown" ?? Omg !

I accompanied someone who was brought to South Suburban via ambulance for c/o chest pain, shortness of breath, and back/flank pain. While on the way there, the EMTs gave him something for pain because it was so bad to where he was having the hardest of time breathing. Upon arrival, we were brought to the Emergency Room waiting lobby, rather than straight back into a room, because thats typically how things work when you are brought via ambulance. Based off of the patients symptoms, some tests/labs were ordered while we were waiting to go back into a room. In between each test, he was brought back out to the waiting room. In addition to the wait time we had to experience (2.5 hours), all the while having difficulties breathing, I guess it is up to whomever is with the patient to wheel them around in the wheelchair to where they need to go next. As a guest with the patient, they were expecting me to do so. Before getting triaged, one of the nurses mentioned to the triaging nurse, "let me know if he needs to come back.. I mean, he already got something for pain on the way here." Very rude to say in front of the patient when the patient thinks theyre dying. We were finally brought back into a room and the nurse, Kimberly, was extremely rude and was rolling her eyes when the patient was talking about the pain he was experiencing.. The doctor, Dr Tolbert?, couldnt figure out what was going on, yet no other diagnostics were ordered for the patient other than the ones that were performed while waiting in the lobby. We saw the nurse 2 times in the 6.5 hours that we were there, yet he was discharged with no diagnosis, but an ample of pain medications. I am a registered nurse myself, and I will say this, that was by far the worst nurse-patient/ physician-patient experience I have ever witnessed. Needless to say, we will never go back to South Suburban for any medical needs, no matter how severe, for they seem to not care an ounce about the patient. Also, if the patient states that they are in pain, theyre in pain. There is no need to keep asking the pain level to see if the patient has a different response from the one they provided you 2 minutes prior. Very unprofessional and careless staff that we experienced last night.
