Look elsewhere before going to this vet. I waited several months to review BRPEH so that my review would not appear biased or emotional. I brought my 2 year old dog to BRPEH on a week night after my dog became very ill and disoriented. After we arrived, we found that they were taking care of an injured cat. I understand that they cannot see all patients at once, but they did not even glance at my dog or simply ask what the emergency was for 45 minutes. I cannot comment on the vets technical skills. He did the standard procedures, checking vitals and taking x-rays. About $600 later, he notified me that he could not determine my dogs ailment. His best guess was anaphylactic shock, so he decided to put her on steroids. At this point, he told me to go home and pick her up in the morning. About three hours later, I received a call from the vet to tell me that my dog had died. According to the vet, "when they went to check on her she was not doing well so they put her down". I find it very hard to believe that during those three hours there were no signs that she was not going to make it. The vet could not provide me with an explanation for this. To this day, I do not blame the vet for my dogs passing... that is life. Rather, I believe I should have received some kind of notification that my dog was about to be put down. My dog and I had a tight bond and I truly believe she would have wanted me to be there with her. Instead, she spent 3 hours slowly dying in an emergency room, completely alone. I cannot tell anyone that they are or are not able to save your pet, but if they are not, they will show little compassion for your loss.

I mistakenly stepped on my 7 month old kittens paw. I was frightened that his paw was broken so I took him to. It was 11:00pm when we made it and it was just a vet tech on site. If I had known the vet was offsite I wouldve went to Sherwoods Pet Hospital. Were in the exam room and I know its a animal hospital but the smell was horrible, it smelled like a urine filled nursing home. The tech in advance let me know it was a $99 exam fee. She checked his weight, as well as his temp. Also, I didnt see her sterilize the thermometer prior to sticking it my cats butt, which too us all by surprised because he hissed. The vet arrive and he was not the man I thought he was. The website shows 2 white men Dr. Mike McElveen and a Dr. Ron Ponthieu. The vet that seen my kitten was a Dr. Bolden, and he was black. Im black so nothing against black people. He was unprofessional, my kitten was in pain and instead of him being comforting he said "you will be alright, we arent gonna kill you , be quiet ". Bolden examined my kitten and recommended that he get an xray which is $165 and two shots $42 EACH. My kitten was putting pressure on his paw so I felt better. Bolden said he didnt now how much money I was willing to spend, and if I gave him an amount he could work with me. My kitten has a vet, a really nice one. So I just wanted to only get medication for the night Ill give take him to the vet the next day. I felt like he was pressuring me to get everything, even thought he kept saying no pressure. Bottom line ill never come back again. They only got one star because I had to put one.

This may be lengthy but well worth the read!!! On Tuesday night our little Westie, Molli, was given a piece of apple. The piece was slightly bigger than she could handle and it became stuck in her throat. She immediately began having respiratory issues so we made the "flight" from Gonzales to the Baton Rouge Pet Emergency Hospital. My poor little Molli was in such distress. It was very sad to see such a happy little dog having such a problem breathing. I felt so guilty. The hospital, namely, Emma was waiting on us. She had already called a doctor and he was just a few minutes out. Dr. Christen Bolden arrived and immediately settled our fears. After performing several tests and xrays it was determined that the piece of apple had moved on to her stomach and she would be fine. Molli had a very restful night and was seen by her primary vet in the morning. The primary vet stated that in 25 years she had never seen such comprehensive documentation from an "ER Vet". Dr. Bolden took the time to document everything he had done to help Molli, provided me a copy and also sent the information to our primary vet. Dr. Christen Bolden took great care of Molli and the human, me, who had caused her such great distress. I would certainly recommend the Baton Rouge Pet Emergency Hospital and most importantly Dr. Christen Bolden. Today, Thursday, Molli is back to her usual self. She was up early with the family to help get them off to work and now she relaxes at home awaiting our return. Thank you Dr. Bolden and the staff of Baton Rouge Pet Emergency Hospital!

I rushed my female Great Dane to this hospital around 8 PM one night because she was very ill. I had already done my research and was about 75 percent sure she had Eclampsia (Milk Fever) considering she had a high fever, swollen gland in nipple, and had just recently given birth. First, it took the doctor about 25 minutes to come in to see her. I thought this was odd considering this was an emergency situation and the only other dog in there was fine. When the doctor finally did show up he took blood work, X-Rays, gave her fluids, and gave her an Oxytosin shot (even after listening to what I suspected the problem to be). An hour or so later he sent her home with Antibiotics and said he did not know what was wrong with her. My bill was about $600! The next week I took her to Dr. Breauxs in Gonzales because the swelling in her nipple got worse. Dr. Breaux diagnosed it as ECLAMPSIA! The next emergency situation we had, we brought in our Great Dane puppy after it had accidently been ran over. They told us he had a punctured lung, broken leg, its liver was probably bleeding. They said they were not "equipped" to deal with this sort of emergency, then given our $300 bill, and sent to LSU Emergency Clinic. When we arrived and they assessed the situation, they said that its lung was NOT punctured, it only had fluid in his lungs and his liver was not bleeding. I will never bring my pets to this place again....

I have a cat who was in the care of the emergency clinic for almost a week. He didnt seem to be monitored at all. I came to visit him on a daily basis and Im the one who consistently discovered he had chewed his urinary catheter out. Even after requesting he be fitted with an e-collar to prevent this, they did not put one on him. He continued to pull it out and had to be sedated each time to replace it. This added up to quite the bill, of which I refused to pay a portion because they had not done their job. The technicians were nice for the most part even though they never returned any of my phone calls or seemed to know the status of my cat. My main complaint is with one of the vets. He was never there, not even during emergency hours, and had always "run an errand". Next time we need emergency services, well go to LSU.
