I have a family vet in Central Maine whom I generally go to but my Lhasa Poo needed a quick check up due to illness caused by hereditary tooth decay. Going to South Portland Veternary was a very costly and heart-wrenchingly infuriating mistake. 4 visits, 2 blood tests, antibiotics (that I had to strongly advocate for), 1 attempted tooth cleaning, 1 full cleaning with anesthesia, and over $500 later my dog was still lethargic and suffering from a infection and swollen lymph nodes. After taking her to my primary vet in central Maine I found that my dog had infections in her top and bottom gums, as well as rotting teeth with exposed roots, causing her a great deal of pain. All the while South Portland Vet stated that my dogs teeth where fine, there was no infection, and that nothing needed to be pulled. My primary vet states putting a dog of her age was very risky, that he will not be doing so in the future due to the risk, and that teeth (especially those with exposed roots) should have been pulled. I cant express how upset I am that this clinic put a living creature so close to my heart through such and ordeal caused by their complete and utter ineptitude. I would not recommend any animal lover take their pet to this vet.

I have used South Portland Vet since I moved to Maine in 2005 for my dog. They took such good care of her and on multiple occasions, went above and beyond to help me, such as the time she fell down the stairs late at night and tore her leg open, I called and they got me that night. On another occasion, they met me at their office on the weekend, (even though they were closed!!) and spent the time to make sure she was allright, taking xrays and giving her a thorough examination. If I remember correctly, I even got a sympothy card when I had to put her down do to illness that they could no longer treat. I would recommend them to anyone who loves their animals!

They are so awesome. Im from California and moved over to the Portland area an decided to go to this vet to do a physical exam on my pup ,only costed 50 bucks usally costs me 70 back home, really chill vet. Very knowledgeable about animals and how to care for them. They have the extra charismatic, caring , homey feel staff and owners of the business great people. They make you feel welcomed an they are lookin out for the best interest for you animal.Go to these wonderful healers of animals you wont be disappointed. An youll want to help support there business.

Jen and Chris are the BEST:):):) I have two dogs and they have been the dogs vets for the dog whole lifes... When my oldest dog a Chocolate Lab was about 6months old he ingested a lethal dose of Advil, I called SPVH and they said bring him right in and saved his life. My younger dog was not acting herself on a Friday night and they got her right in and diagnosed her with Lyme disease... They really go Above and Beyond, Thanks Jen and Chris:):):):):)

Warm, Welcoming and Caring. We have been using this vet for over 10 years and always have a great experience. Both vets are patient and great with animals... and any kiddos you may also have in tow. They even let my son listen to my dogs heart when he was asking questions. We have moved, but still make the hour trip to see them. Highly recommended!

They went out of their way to see me on short notice and even stayed open past closing time when I was late to my appointment thanks to work. Then, on top of that, everyone was nice and super patient with me and didnt once make me feel like they were trying to rush me out the door.

Had my first visit this morning. Great attitudes among the staff, pricing was totally reasonable ($160-ish for exam, all vaccines, heartworm test, and tapeworm medication). Highly recommended.
