This is my first experience with a mental health facility. I was sent to the ER due to concerns for my safety after talking to my therapist about my worsening depression, suicidal thoughts, and self-harm. I was then admitted to the short-term stay section of SBC. The place seems focused on kids with behavioral issues or trouble with the law and is very strict. You can’t touch any other patients, even to comfort them if they are crying. The “level up” system is called “LAW” (L being lowest and W being highest) which also seems to imply that their focus is on kids with behavioral issues or trouble with authority. It’s as if they try and make the place for everyone, but the focus of the facility itself seems more on kids with behavioral issues. Many of the defiant or rebellious patients hinder the progress of the patients who are there for mental illness or emotional problems. There is a lot of verbal fighting and occasional threats of physical violence that never happened, which makes the atmosphere stressful for people like me who are easily anxious. A lot of the therapies and activities seem focused on younger kids, which sometimes makes it less helpful for the older patients like me. I was the oldest one there at the time, with the vast majority of the other patients being 14 or younger. The ages of everyone there ranged from 8 to 17. With the huge age gap added to the vast differences in reasons many of the kids were there, it seemed to make appropriate treatment for everyone kind of hard. Every individual day of the week they do the same lesson with the same worksheets, so if you stay longer than a week there is a lot of redundancy (not to mention worksheets kind of make therapy seem ingenuine). At night its almost impossible to sleep. Your door has to remain open at all times, and while you can turn off your room’s light, the hallway lights are very bright. There is almost constant noise at night as well, with staff members talking and laughing outside, doors closing loudly, and the air turning off and on loudly. Being someone afraid of sudden/loud noises, I would often jerk awake at night on the verge of having a panic attack. Not everything about the place was bad, however. A lot of the staff members seemed to really care about the patients and would ask you if you were alright if you seemed down and would put a lot into helping you when they could. Meeting the other patients was also nice. In short, the place would in my opinion benefit from a focus on a certain age group and a certain issue (behavioral or mental/emotional) rather than attempting to work for everyone and partially succeeding. Specific care for a set of individuals with common problems is much more effective than vague therapy that tries to apply to everyone. The staff members were nice and helpful, though. I feel the place did help me somewhat, but it could’ve been better. I dont have experience with any other facilities though, so Im not sure how itd be in relevance to others.

My son checked in here today! After the weekend we had at a different place in the town we live in I was scared to death to send my child anywhere else! But I have to say the staff here are truly amazing people! They called me as soon as my son got settled in, went over every little detail, talked to me about what we had been through, and anwsered any question I had. Then they let my son call me and talk to me, his dad, his brother and sister! No one rushed him or bothered him! Then after he got to bed a nurse called me back told me he was doing great and went over everything they would be doing with possible medication, she read me a list of every medicine they where allowed to use down to Tylenol! I must say so far this place is amazing! Thank yall for helping my son!!

This place cuts corners has untrained staff. Falsify documentation. They are frequently understaffed. Children are just dollar signs to them apart of a buisness model. This is not everyone there but vast majority. Lots of exceptional things are swept under the rug.

I went here back in December and I have to say the place was very well structured being a patient. Sometimes I miss it and the friends I met while I was here. I just hated we couldnt see out the windows in our rooms

My daughter was admitted and Ill say the level of care, concern, and unity was there right away. Clean facility and I defiantly know my daughter is in good hands.
