We are new patients of Dr. Matthews and have been SO happy with our experience with him and his friendly staff. We had been seeing another vet for several years, but I was frustrated with them because they wouldnt take my concerns seriously about something being off with our new setter puppy. I went to Dr Matthews for a second opinion, and Ill never go back to my old vet. With the first look at our pup he knew something wasnt right. He patiently listened to my concerns and as I watched the gears turning in his head, I knew I was at the right place. He heard every word I said, never made me feel rushed, and made me feel validated with my concerns. He was SINCERELY devoted to solving this problem for us. He developed a plan of action and went over everything with me (testing and costs) upfront, and since I had limited funds at that time he worked with me on what we could do within my budget. The staff is friendly and helpful and followed up with a phone call to check on our pup a couple of days later. After starting treatment, we noticed an almost immediate improvement in our pup, and she is getting better every day. We may even owe her life to Dr. Matthews.. I am convinced she could not have continued on in the condition she was in. She is a happy, playful pup now and its because of him. Thank you Dr. Matthews for listening and caring, and for turning Daphnes life around!

Because we live in Saluda, a vet within walking distance was thought to be a great bonus. However, we feel bad about having to provide this negative review. We will spare you a long narrative. But a summary is this: We had Dr. Mathews look at a mass on our boxer’s neck. His initial view was to put some cortizone cream on it. We could see the mass growing and it was causing Rocky discomfort and so we went back to have the cyst removed (office visit, including medical procedure #2). Rocky’s stitches came undone the next day and staples were inserted (Office Visit #3) Biopsy showed no cancer, thank goodness, but the mass was a growing tumor. During the call with the results, we relayed our concerns that the wound had not yet healed even though the staples were to be removed the following day. I asked that Rocky be evaluated before removing the staples. No such eval was done, staples removed in the lobby of the office. Later that evening, wound had fully reopened and it required emergency surgery under general anesthesia. Our request to be reimbursed was rejected by Dr. Mathews of Saluda Veterinary Hospital. In fact, we never even received a response to our request. The email to this date has not been acknowledged. Not even was the standard care insufficient; but as a business, Saluda Veterinary Hospital fails as a customer-focused enterprise.

Dr Matthews is one of the best vets around the WNC area. I switched to 4 other vets before finding him several years ago. My 4 dogs have done well going there. One dog has had surgery there and did very well with it all. Another has severe allergies and Dr. Matthews started at the basic procedures and we worked our way up to eventually to getting the testing to find the allergies. he hasnt missed a beat in it all. when I had concerns things werent working due to hair loss (not hot spots) he listened. He has to be one of the best listeners for a vet, I simply have full confidence in his ability to treat all my animals and will not ever switch !!

Dr. Matthews is awesome and probably saved my dogs life. He caught signs of heart failure when I went in thinking my older dog just had joint issues causing his fatigue. The prices are extremely reasonable, probably best Ive seen. Staff is friendly and they follow up. Highly recommend!

I love this place! The vet knows huskies very well (I have 2) and handles them beautifully. Reasonably priced and quality care. Will keep going back:-)
