These vets have a great deal of experience (30+ years) in their two speciality areas. My dog had a couple of ruptured disks and I chose to have spinal surgery with Dr. Skinner. I was fortunate to be able to afford this treatment. It was unbelievable expensive -- like most medical treatments. Dr. Skinner was recommended by my local vet and had an excellent reputation. He has probably done more spinal surgeries than anyone in the Northwest. Both he and Dr. Franklin seemed friendly, and knowledgeable yet down to earth. The front desk staff were very kind and generous of nature. Unusually so for any medical practice. You can tell they enjoy working there and I believe a happy staff is a reflection of the Drs. management style. A happy staff will provided better care for your pet. They allowed me to come visit any time I wished during working hours and Dr. Skinner or his nurse, Sharon, called me everyday with progress reports while I stayed in Portland. The only issue I wish to alert people to is their pricing. No matter what price I was quoted on two procedures it cost $500 more than quoted. While I understand some things are unanticipated, I do think it more than coincidence that both visits were almost exactly $500 more than quoted. Would I go there again - absolutely. Even with this glitch I would highly recommend their practice.

Outstanding specialty hospital. Dr. Franklin was a kind, honest, and expert veterinarian. I was very surprised at the reasonable prices (more than at a typical vet clinic, but not prohibitively so. Still much cheaper than ER and definitely closer in scale to a vet clinic). When our CKD cat crashed hard, we were referred to Dr. Franklin. Within a few days, we had a much better handle on the situation and had a protocol in place to do our best to help our lil girl recover. Dr. F was quick to adjust depending on how our cat was progressing, calling to follow-up nearly once a day. He clearly explained test results and treatment options and most certainly pushed for the best care (not for the most expensive). In addition, Dr. Fs supporting staff was amazingly kind and supportive. Anyone that ends up at a specialty hospital is not having a good time with their pet. His staff was sensitive but professional, giving people the attention they needed promptly but also not rushing clients. I was very glad to work with Dr. F and the team at OVSH. In our crisis, it was so important to have their support.

It was well worth the visit because my dogs life was saved. I spoke to my primary veterinary and told him about the charges and he flipped once he heard the price and what he did. I owe Dr. Skinner, I know this but I have been unemployed for almost 2.5 years. He keeps adding like 25% interest to my bill so I must pay it soon. Im financially insolvent, I have lost my home to a foreclosure but still I will start paying this bill even if its a little at a time. I am telling you this because this man does not mess around...he tried to take it out of my account (2300.00) but there wasnt even .23 in there. As far as specialized in what I took my doctor in for, he was not versed and did nothing more but charge me about 6x the amount more than just going to my regular vet. Oh well.

Long story short: Dr. Franklin is incredible. Knowledgeable, friendly, and communicative. I went to Dr. Franklin to seek a second opinion for my cat who didnt seem like he could hold on much longer. After being told by a specialist at a different practice that I should essentially accept the fact that Id need to put him to sleep, Dr. Franklin saw beyond the obvious symptoms that might throw off less experienced vets and recommended a treatment plan that is helping him recover wonderfully. Moreover, his treatment plan avoided many of the expensive tests that the first vet suggested.

Dr. Franklin is amazing and brilliant..my cat has lymphoma, diabetes, renal failure. every time he checks her bloodwork to decide which chemo agent to use. Fortunately I have Trupanion pet insurance which I highly recommend to anyone with a pet younger than 13 years old...they reimburse me very quickly for the costly expense of the cancer because it was not a preexisting condition.
