I had been given very bad news by Banfield Pet Clinic in Clackamas. My little female kitty had a mass in an anal gland and..it was likely cancer since a mass there was very unlikely to be benign. The choices were: Surgery (over $1000) ..which MIGHT be in time to save her but it might already be too late and the cancer metasthezed which meant chemo and still the prognosis was poor OR Euthanasia (since she might otherwise suffer more and would die ..in a relatively short time) OR Nothing! I contacted South Clackamas Vet services in seeking a lower cost vet surgeon.(those in Portland area were all over $1000 plus would also charge for the initial visit/and exam. Over the phone, the staff person was warm and assuring, and gave me an estimate over the phone (which most vet staff were reluctant to do),which made me feel the long drive there with my kitty would be worth it. I had Banfield fax all my cats records to SCVS. I drove there on the appointed day, cat making distressed noises all the way...and met the vet who was gentle and interested and impressed me right away because she had read all my cats records and asked questions about what she had read, having noticed inconsistencies in the records. She inspected my kitty, noted how fast her heartrate was and said she would let her relax and calm down before inspecting her further so that it would be less traumatic for her. Dr Duval took her time with my kitty and shared her thoughts about anaesthesia, and procedures, and again impressed me with her love for animals and concern about how they react to invasive procedures etc... She then examined my kitty and announced that the anal glands were just fine! She hypothesized that the "mass" in the anal gland had been cleared up by the single shot of antibiotics the kitty had been given the day Banfield examined her..because it was not a tumor but merely very thick fluid which might have felt like a knot to the examiner ...but was due to infection (now gone) and the inflammation of the gland..! She had carefullly and thoroughly examined both anal glands and they were perfectly fine.. My kitty was NOT in need of euthanasia (glad I did not make THAT choice!). And did NOT need an operation! I was so relieved as was the kindly vet... We were so happy and relieved that we hugged at the end of the visit. Oh..and the fee? Less than $30.

My dog was involved in a house fire and in the fire he hurt his leg. We took him to his regular veterinary and they wanted so much for X-rays and treatment right now with us losing everything we could not afford it so we just got him the medication that they recommend that would make him comfortable until we could afford his treatment. So I was telling a about what happened and she recommended that we bring our pet here. So I called and yes the care was way cheaper then his regular vets prices. So after talking to my husband we agreed on taking him here but before my husband asked me to ask them what was there procedure in getting the x-rays do they sedate there animals ect.... so I called back and asked and the lady and she said that for unruly animal the charge $50 dollars and I said okay then she asked me what kind of dog is it? I said he is a pitbull. She then told me that she dont think the doctor would see him. I was like why he is not a vicious animal you can check his record and call his groomers and regular vet. I told her we will get him a muzzle if we have to he is in pain. She then told me if he needed a muzzle that they could not see him. I told her no I said we can get a muzzle and from the sounds of it you are stereotyping him because hes a pitbull you can call his vet and groomers I just wanted him sedated because he is in pain and he dont want anyone to touch his leg. And she said yeah I dont think she would see him so I asked her if she could ask the doctor? She put me on hold then came back and said that the doctor said yes he would not be a good fit. I am so hurt right now because they label my dog as a dangerous animal with out even seeing him! He has NEVER done anything in his 7years to be labeled unruly! But I will now have to pay the over priced charges so we can see what is wrong with him. Shame on them my dog has been threw so much! He even gave the fireman love for saving his life and they thought he was the sweetest dog even in a very stressful situation he was claim and cool. All pitbulls are not mean dogs

I honestly loved this place so I am sad to be writing this but I feel that it needs to be done. I took my border collie in for an injury which required stitches. I paid for her first visit. Dr. Swan gave me two choices: a cone or a bandage, and the cone was something I didnt think would work so we went with the bandage. She informed me that she wouldnt charge me for changing the bandages. I went back twice to have it changed and took her stitches out myself (which she said would be $15). She also applied some laser treatment that I was never asked if I could pay the charges. She just did it so I assumed that I wouldnt be charged. Two months later I received and invoice charging me for both bandage changes and laser. When I called to discuss the charges, the doctor said I was wrong and that she did say she would charge me. So Im mad. I loved the care my dog got but will be going to a different vet for the unclarity of charges and what I feel is dishonesty. I encourage everyone to ask very specific questions regarding the care and billing of your animals. Personally, I will be making the drive out of town to another vet from now on.

The compassion and true care for both animals and their owners is beyond words. All of the staff are knowledgeable and professional too. I have known and followed Dr. Duval from another very good practice for over 15 years. She has always been supportive and willing to research conditions and work with suggestions reasonably. Dr. Holicheck is also amazing, compassionate and works outside the box. Hes preformed two lifesaving procedures for me where other vets including specialists have said theres no hope.

I took my baby goat in there and they were very friendly people, but when we got done waiting for the vet, for 45 minutes, all he did was look at him, he jabbed his thumb into my goats hip, and said that its just nerve damage... I will go back, but will ask for a female vet... My goat was walking worse for a couple weeks after that, and I decided to sell him because we couldnt afford to pay another large bill..

I took my dog in recently to have his tooth extracted. The entire staff was extremely helpful and accommodating. The service was great and their prices are very reasonable. My dog is now home and doing great. I will use them again in the future. Thanks South Clackamas Veterinary Services!
